My partner and I attended a plaster workshop given by The Montalvo House non profit. Silk Mooney is the director of this organization and she is doing a wonderful job
educating the public about historic building methods and materials. In addition to costing awareness of our historic built environment, she and her husband have started a farmers market selling organic produce in a "food desert". They are well organized and ambitious. All they lack is a little more manpower and funding to show residents how to save and refurbish old buildings that add to the fabric of their town. And eat better too!
A great little community farmer's market staffed by volunteers that are friendly and knowledgeable. Fresh baked bread, locally sourced honey and vegetables, with a small selection of locally produced soaps and lotions. Not only are their products great but so is their mission. Join their email list for regular updates.
I recently found this wonderful gem In a nearby community while looking for a healthier way to feed my family. It has been a blessing to know and now be a part of such a great service to our community through both education and a willingness to help others live a healthier lifestyle.
Years ago I met Silk asking to buy my certified organic produce for her non profit. Having limited amounts of crops because of my personal commitment to farming without irrigation I said yes. I also helped in her community with a school garden project a garden demo for the students at the local school. A wonderful event connecting similar minded people making a better and enriching life for others.
In order to raise money to restore one of Brackettville's first Hispanic homes, the Montalvo House has opened an organic market to raise funds for its restoration and preservation.
This requires a mind baffling amount of work. However, not only does it raise money for the project, but it has, possibly even more profoundly, raised the awareness not only of this small local community but neighboring ones as well to the vital importance of organic food for health. It has also turned locals on to the possibility of raising organic fruits and vegetables themselves, plus given local organic producers a market for their goods.
Who could have guessed that this project would have such far-reaching consequences for the community? It's a gem!
Awesome addition to our community. The Montalvo House is teaching this community about their roots, sustainability, gardening in our backyards, nutrition, taking care of where we live and being proud of it! Great folks, awesome produce in a food desert! Lot's of energy that gets you motivated to make a difference! I have volunteered, donated, advised, and I am a happy client!
Montalvo house is helping to restore a historical plot in our area while providing locally grown food. It's a win-win!
Wonderful selection if you get there early and friendly service. I find things at Montalvo House that I am not able to find locally and drive 30 miles for it. It is a wonderful little market and they are expanding slowly.
For being in a rural area with no farmer's market and the nearest grocery store is 30 minutes away, MH allows me to purchase yummy fresh organic local produce and other nutrtional products. Great people. Great Service.
Kinney County, where this Texas Historic Marker property is, is a very small county with only 3200 people in it. What The Montalvo House 501(c)(3) organization is doing is great. They are preserving a part of our history that might otherwise be forgotten and doing it in such a way that all of our community, especially our children, are involved. Great job you guys!
