Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Philanthropy, Private Grantmaking Foundations

Mission: Montaña de Luz (MdL) is an international non-profit headquartered in Columbus, OH. MdL is dedicated to providing medical, educational, psychological and financial support to youth and families impacted by HIV/AIDS in Honduras. MdL opened its doors in 2001 as a hospice for children living with HIV, as medication was not yet available in Honduras. When our team gained access to medication, we were able to expand our mission and now are one of the leading providers of HIV care for youth and families in the country. Today we are proudly dedicated to family preservation and family strengthening, as well as eradicating HIV stigma and creating a safer world for individuals living with HIV. We believe in lifting families out of poverty and ultra-poverty by working alongside them, listening to their needs, and investing in them. Our team in Honduras is entirely Honduran-led, women-led, and all programming is developed by our in-country team.

Montaña de Luz is a unique Columbus based non-profit that works abroad in Honduras serving a population that desperately deserves our attention- those affected by HIV/AIDS. I worked on-site in Honduras for 13 months and was able to see the various success stories that come from providing medical, mental, and educational care for the children and young adults. What makes MdL so special, though, is its dedication to become one of the top comprehensive care centers in the country by going outside its doors and expanding the population it can touch. Its commitment to keeping families together and teaching them how to live with HIV and be a light to those affected by it makes MdL a truly great non-profit and one I am happy to support.

I first went to MdL in 2008 on a service trip with my family and was so touched by the mission, I returned 5 more times and moved there to serve as a long-term volunteer for 13 months in 2015, and now sit on the board of directors. MdL and the people it has connected me to have so deeply impacted me; it is such a wonderful organization to be involved with. I would urge everyone to consider a trip to Honduras, where you'll be connected with children and young adults who have so much to share. There are also various volunteer opportunities available here in Columbus, OH. MdL is working hard to de-stigmatize HIV/AIDS and help young people find their place in the world and it is such an honor to be a part of this organization.

We have been annually donating to sponsor children through this charity for several years. They are great about sending updates on their work and we sometimes get mail from the kids we sponsor. We know people who have visited to volunteer and have had great experiences.

I volunteered on a weeklong mission with Montana de Luz in 2009 and 2010 when I was a young high schooler. The integrated and immersive experience taught me both inter-cultural lessons but the importance of sustainable development. The new strategic model of family reintegration MdL has begun to implement I believe will lead to great strides for the children and/or teenagers lives moving forward. MdL has continued to impress me as I seen it evolve over the past 8 years, and I foresee to only continue to be inspired by their efforts .

I first visited MdL in 2007 with my church for one week. When I returned for a 6 week volunteer experience the following year, I got to see a little more behind the scenes of the daily operations and with that, the dedication of the staff and volunteers. Those experiences caused me to re-examine what I was doing with my life and eventually changed my career path. It is exciting for me to see the children grow up and begin taking responsibility for their own futures.

This is a wonderful group of people doing great work for their children in Honduras. We feel blessed to be a sponsor of a little girl there. Montana de Luz is full of love and hope, much is shared with donors and sponsors and the smiles on the children's faces say it all!

The nonprofit I run, Orphan World Relief, has familiar with the great work Montana de Luz has been doing in Honduras for about 5 years. This past year we started supporting their work financially. In 2011 we had the great privilege of visiting them to see first-hand how they're supporting orphans and children at-risk - specifically those impacted by HIV/AIDS.

It's an amazing organization with an amazing story. These children are some of the best cared for children in the industry.
