Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services

Mission: The mission of the mockingbird society is to improve foster care and end youth homelessness. Our youth programs train young people who have been homeless or in foster care to be their own best advocates. By doing so, they change policies and perceptions that stand in the way of every child having a safe and stable home. Our family programs advocate for innovation in the way services such as foster care are delivered. Together, our solutions focus on improving the social service systems that ultimately serve thousands of children, youth and families each year in washington and beyond.

I grew up in Colombia, well aware of its natural beauty and enormous socioeconomic gaps. In December 2012, Shakira's Barefoot Foundation was requesting donations to build a school in a very poor neighborhood in Cartagena, called Lomas de Peye. I bought a brick and studied the beautiful building concept illustrations. Sometime later I saw photos of the finished building and that moment was very emotional for me. I am happy that children in Lomas de Peye have a school of this caliber and access to resources they otherwise wouldn't have. This is, to this day, the most meaningful donation I've ever given. Equity in all areas of society, especially good quality education, makes a big difference in its development and that of its children. This applies to all global communities. To quote Malala Yousafzai 'Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow. Education is neither Eastern nor Western, it is human.'
