Causes: Human Services, Neighborhood Centers
Mission: Mission neighborhood centers delivers culturally sensitive, multi-generational, community-based services focused on low-income families. We develop and promote leadership skills that empower families to build strong, healthy and vibrant neighborhoods.
Programs: Child development: the head start program provides child development preschool services to children ages 0-5. In 2014, mnc was awarded a federal head start/early head start grantee contract, providing greater resources to serve more children. Ca department of education services provides wraparound services, allowing parents who work or go to school full time to place their children in full-day care. Preschool for all services provide funding for children age 4 to attend preschool. 443 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers were served during the year.
workforce development: the organization's la tierra program in collaboration with the city of san francisco's department of public works ("dpw") and the department of the environment ("doe") empowered highest-risk young adults, men and women ages 14-27, by providing them with entry level jobs in landscaping, maintenance, urban green zones and the environmental preservation of san francisco. In partnership with dpw, mnc operated its 11th annual youth and young adults summer employment and training program, cleaning and greening public property in san francisco. It employed 203 youth and young adults primarily residing in san francisco's public housing developments. The year round training for 13 adults between the ages of 18 and 24, along with their supervisor mentors was also coordinated by mnc. The participants worked 24 hours per week cleaning freeway off and on ramps in san francisco and were required to attend a general education diploma classes (ged). Mnc in collaboration with dpw provided supervision to 30-45 young adults participating in the mayor's violence prevention program called ipo. Participants in the program worked 24 hours per week cleaning freeways and on-ramps.
youth program: youths participated in age-appropriate empowerment activities designed to assist high-risk youth and gang-affiliated youth to reach their fullest potential, develop leadership and employment skills and attain their educational goals. Youth programs included case management, after school tutorial programs, drop-in recreation, girls and boys support groups, female focused services, organized sport activities, summer youth employment, hiv, sti, and pregnancy prevention programs, special events, field trips, gang prevention and evening street outreach programs. Approximately 800 youths were served by mnc through its youth programs during the year.
