Mission: MYSO offers the highest level of training in ensemble musicianship to motivated young people from diverse backgrounds across southeastern Wisconsin.Students with varied levels of instrumental skills benefit from the broad range of MYSO experiences, all created to foster talent, build character and enhance lives by nurturing an enduring love of music.
Target demographics: Motivated young musicians between the ages of 8 an 18.

Programs: MYSO includes a constellation of ensembles that offer high quality experiences for students at various skill levels: Senior Symphony, Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia, Sinfonia, String Orchestras, Junior Wind Ensemble, Chamber Flute Ensemble, Flute Chorale, theory and composition classes, and much more! Progressions (Introductory and Advanced) - An intensive, high-impact string program designed to help young City of Milwaukee students develop instrumental basics and prepare for a place in a MYSO performance group Jazz Studies - Directed especially to City of Milwaukee students, Jazz Studies is helping to diversify MYSO’s membership, music and audiences. It includes classroom instruction along with jazz improvisation techniques and combo rehearsal, plus performance opportunities. Calypso, featuring steel drums and other percussion, was formed in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools and focuses on City of Milwaukee children. It offers a traditional Trinidadian steel band experience for students with little formal musical training. MYSO also has active partnerships with area Boys & Girls Clubs—offering Jazz Elements and music talent development opportunities—and the fine Latino Arts String Program. Regular performances in area schools and community centers, plus MYSO’s innovative Neighborhood Concert Series at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, allow thousands of area school children to hear top quality music performed by their peers—free!
