Mission: The mission of milwaukee ahec is to improve access to health care in southeastern wisconsin's underserved communities through the development of community-based, client-oriented, culturally-relevant, and collaborative health professions education programs.
Programs: During the 2016-2017 school year, 5 new yhsc members were trained, with a total membership of 10. Yhsc members spent 5 hours each in training and 116 total hours volunteering. Sixteen peer health educators at pulaski high school were trained on diabetes prevention & awareness topics. They then trained other high school students and led a walking program. 15 staff members and 76 students participated in walking program. 163 high school and middle school students participated in health career awareness activities hosted/facilitated by milwaukee ahec.
milwaukee ahec hosted 32 training in urban medicine and public health (triumph) students for the community and public health enrichment experience (caphene). Milwaukee ahec connected 30 medical students to community projects in milwaukee, during their primary care clerkships. 23 general pediatric residents and 4 dental residents gained clinic experience at sites that work with diverse vulnerable populations. 10 students participate in wisconsin express in may 2017. Provided community health intern program in milwaukee, and 24 students participated in the summer of 2016. Eight chip interns were rusch students.
milwaukee ahec provides leadership to address health disparities and access issues, by training chws, and leading the wisconsin community health worker alliance. Sixteen chws were trained in 2016-2017. Ahec consultant to the greater wisconsin agency for healthy aging conducted evidence based programming on chronic disease management and trained 15 leaders to be trainers.
