Mission:
MilkweedEditions works to identify, nurture and publish transformative literature, and build an engaged community around it. We publish distinctive voices ofliterary merit, exploring the ethical, cultural and esthetic issues thatsocieties continually need to address. Milkweed publishes fiction, poetry,nonfiction about the natural world, and fiction for young readers.
Results: Recognized both nationally and internationally, we publish between fifteen and twenty books each year in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and books for young readers. We have some two hundred and fifty titles in print, and there are well over a million copies of our books in circulation. Over the three decades since the founding of the press as a nonprofit organization, our books and authors have received hundreds of awards and designations of national significance, including two Lannan Literary Awards, two Whiting Awards, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Poetry, two American Book Awards, seven New York Times Book Review Notable Books of the Year, two Publishers Weekly Best Books of the Year, and thirteen Minnesota Book Awards. Locally, nationally, and even internationally, Milkweed Editions is widely respected for the artistic excellence of our publishing program. We are clearly a leader in our field, and have contributed significantly to the cultural life of Minnesota and the nation.
Programs:
Ouridentity is most clearly expressed in the writers and work we select forpublication. We publish books in four genres: fiction, poetry, nonfiction, andliterature for young readers. One of the few independent publishing houses to acceptunsolicited as well as agented manuscripts, Milkweed publishes books that havethe potential to become a part of our cultural legacy and make a lasting impacton society. Our high editorial and production standards ensure that we arepublishing the best novels, short stories, and poetry being written today byemerging and established writers. In 2010, we will publish 78 writers in16 books.
