Midwest Young Artists Conservatory continues to have an impact on my son’s life, ten years after his high school graduation. Yes, he had the opportunity to grow as a musician, but Dr. Dennis also helped his students grow in character: learning to respect one another as well as their conductor. There was a program appropriate for every child.

Midwest Young Artists Conservatory (MYAC) is truly a life-changing organization! As someone who had the privilege of being part of this extraordinary group throughout my middle and high school years, I can confidently say that MYAC played a pivotal role in shaping not only my musicianship but also my character and work ethic. The sense of community, unparalleled instruction, and countless opportunities for growth make it a standout program for any aspiring young musician.

From rehearsing with world-class musicians to performing in stunning venues around the world, MYAC provides an environment where students are constantly inspired to strive for excellence. The friendships I formed and the lessons I learned have stayed with me long after I graduated from the program. MYAC fosters a culture of collaboration, discipline, and passion that extends far beyond music and into every aspect of life.

I would not be where I am today without the incredible experiences and mentorship I gained at MYAC. Whether you're a student or a parent considering this program, I wholeheartedly recommend MYAC as a transformative journey that nurtures talent and builds lifelong memories.

Truly Enriching Experience

As a parent of a student at MYAC, I am incredibly impressed by the chamber music program. The small ensemble setting allows my child to develop essential skills in collaboration, creativity, and musicianship. The program's focus on individualized attention and mentorship from expert instructors has truly helped them grow as a musician. It's more than just playing music - it's about learning to work together as a team, interpret music deeply, and express emotion through sound. MYAC has provided an enriching and supportive environment where my child’s passion for music has flourished.

My three children, all professional classical musicians now, had their start at MYAC in 1993. The organization started out offering the highest quality music education available and have not changed in that pursuit of excellence. Directors foster not only musical but personal growth with positive reinforcement, honest evaluation and constructive criticism. I'm hoping my grandchildren are also able to enjoy the benefits of MYAC in the future!

MYAC is a beautiful place to be! From the moment you step in, you immediately feel at home. Everyone—the conductor, the faculty, and the staff—is warm, helpful, and welcoming.

MYAC offers a variety of music programs, all of which are excellent, featuring a professional and diverse repertoire. The faculty are dedicated and passionate about teaching music and fostering a lifelong love of it. My children are in the orchestra and chamber music programs, and since they joined MYAC, they have grown significantly, both musically and technically.

Dr. D, the founder of MYAC, is a remarkable person. He is exceptionally kind, warm, and gentle. He loves, cares for, and embraces everyone. He not only shapes and guides the students to be great musicians but also teaches them valuable life lessons. He encourages them to bless others with their gift of music. He is beyond amazing and truly inspirational!

MYAC is a loving and safe environment, a place where everyone is embraced. I am incredibly grateful to be part of the MYAC family and wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone.

MYA is an amazing school that teaches young children the value of hard work and discipline while instilling in them a love and appreciation for music at its highest caliber. This is my daughter's 3rd year at MYA playing the violin and she loves it. She can't imagine her Saturday morning anywhere else except at MYA. She loves her orchestra teacher and all other staff and faculty she comes in contact with. I found that MYA has given her so much purpose that I decided to give back by being a volunteer Board member. I am so impressed by the range of musical programs offered - orchestra, jazz, chamber groups, theory classes. There's so much opportunity for a young person to grow musically! I also love that many children spend hours in the Fort Sheridan building eating their lunch, doing their homework while they are between their programs. I feel safe leaving my child here and can see her adopting some of the other programs that MYA has to offer. Proud to be associated with this awesome school!

I'm very grateful to have participated in this program. I was only in MYAC's Symphony for two years, but the opportunities that were given to me were amazing. I wasn't expecting to be able to play in Orchestra Hall until later in my life, but my first year there, we had our 30th anniversary at Orchestra Hall! Every year they do an outreach concert at Ravinia, also another stage that I didn't think I'd play on for a while. Lastly, I was able to work with some of the greatest musicians from the Chicagoland area, like John Bruce Yeh, who I currently study with. Another amazing opportunity that I had this summer was working with Gustavo Dudamel, which wouldn't have happened if I wasn't a part of MYAC. Also with MYAC, I found my people. I never really felt like I belonged anywhere, but this place became my second home and the friends I made became my second family. Dr. D made me feel very welcome as well. He recognized my talent and helped me be more confident in my playing.

The Lang Lang International Music Foundation has done a summer program for many years with Midwest Young Artists Conservancy (MYA), at which our young pianists spend a week with Dr. Allan Dennis and his music staff and the youth orchestra. It is an amazing experience for our young musicians to be under the tutelage of "Dr. D", and to have the opportunity to work and perform with both MYA's wonderful orchestra, and chamber music groups. It is an experience that our musicians remember and cherish.

MYA was instrumental (pun intended) in the improvement we've seen in my daughter (age 12) as a violinist. We joined the beginner level orchestra during 2020 as MYA was one of the only premier orchestra programs still performing during COVID. After a year with the program, my daughter wanted to level up to the next orchestra but wasn't selected. Dr. Dennis took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to give one-on-one constructive & honest feedback to my daughter, and also recommended a teacher who is absolutely phenomenal. My daughter's playing abilities and confidence have taken off since that experience, and I give all of the credit to MYA's family-like atmosphere and high expectations for its students.

I am a parent of two alums who had an extraordinary experience with Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. The musicianship is of the highest order, but of equal importance is the personal development and friendships nurtured by the community. My daughters are now playing in college playing Jazz, Orchestra and Marching bands. When they have the rare Saturday afternoon in Chicago, they often return to MYA to visit socially or sometimes sit in with one of the ensembles.

As a parent of a high school junior who plays the cello, our family has had the privilege of witnessing our child's musical journey take a remarkable turn at the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. In 2022, our son joined the Symphony Orchestra, and from the very beginning, it became evident that this experience would far exceed our expectations.

Dr. Dennis, founder of MYAC and the Symphony Orchestra director, has been a significant teacher in our son's musical journey. Dr. Dennis speaks with the students in a heartfelt and inspiring way, and he has an unmistakable passion for music. His words encourage a lifelong love of music, irrespective of what the students may do post-high school. His approach is a testament to his dedication not only to their musical growth but to their personal and educational development as well.

One of the standout things for us at MYAC is the sense of camaraderie among the students. It's heartwarming to see them root for one another and provide support without succumbing to toxic competition. Instead, the focus is on collective growth, artistic expression, and the joy of making music together. The level of musicianship among these high school students is remarkable. The music showcases an incredible level of talent, dedication, and hard work.

In our short time with MYAC, our family has not only witnessed our son's deepening appreciation for ensemble playing and the effort required to bring incredible music to life, but we have also seen the formation of friendships that we hope are lifelong and beyond the stage.

MYAC is a musical haven where students are encouraged to reach their full potential, not just as musicians but as individuals. Dr. Dennis and the entire staff have created an environment that fosters artistic growth, camaraderie, and a genuine love for music. To witness high school students play with the level of professionalism and heart that they do is a testament to the exceptional education and community offered by this music conservatory.

If you're a parent seeking an extraordinary musical education for your child, I can wholeheartedly say that the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory is an outstanding choice.

All four of our children have been through the music program or are currently in it. MYAC is a wonderful opportunity for young musicians of all ages and skill levels to receive top notch music training. It’s not just the quality of the music education and the experience of playing in ensembles (ranging from beginner to advanced) with other devoted students. The staff and faculty take personal interest in mentoring and supporting each student. Our children look forward to their weekend, rehearsals and performance opportunities with their friends at MYAC.

Not every student is interested in a career in music. However, for those that want to go on, many of the best music conservatory‘s in the country, send representatives to MYAC or recruit from MYAC. This includes Eastman, Oberlin, Julliard and others.

MYAC has made a positive impression on many of its students over the past 30 years as evidenced by the tremendous alumni support that they enjoy.

We found MYAC because of a recommendation of a parent whose daughter played in the Symphony Orchestra.
Now both of our daughters are part of this wonderful Conservatory. Even though the older one is an alumna and the younger is a senior this year, the feeling is that you belong at MYAC for life.
Each music director is extremely professional, dedicated and passionate not only about education and music but also support and personal growth of each student.
Our daughters learned the value of discipline and work preparing songs and concerts. This education built their character and perseverance.
The memories of time spent with friends in rehearsals, and having pizza, snacks and conversations on couches during breaks. Experiencing playing in concerts and traveling together are part of growing up in MYAC.

Our family met Dan Chmielinski, a MYAC alum in May of 2019 at a bass conference. Our then 9-year-old son had just started playing double bass and he wanted to play jazz. Dan told us how he had played jazz at MYAC and encouraged us to enroll our son in MYAC's jazz program. We followed up and our son joined MYAC during the fall of 2019. The first fall concert at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at Northwestern University was quite an eye opener. Not only did we get to see our young son play in such a beautiful concert hall, but we also witnessed the quality of the performances by many of MYAC's orchestra, choral and jazz ensembles. We were really impressed. It was such a proud parent moment! It felt good that we had made such a good decision to join MYAC! We knew that we had found our home4music for many years to come!

We are forever thankful for both Dan to point us towards MYAC and for Dr. D and Mrs. Dennis for giving our son a chance to play jazz at a very young age and for helping us find a wonderful versatile private bass teacher too. Now four years later our son still continues to grow and benefit from being part of the MYAC jazz program. He now plays in the Jazz Orchestra. Impressed by our son's experiences at MYAC, our daughter also decided to join the orchestra program at MYAC. She currently plays in Concert Orchestra and a Chamber Music ensemble. Her private cello teacher is an MYAC alum too! MYAC is our home away from home both on Saturdays and Sundays!

My son has joined one of the MYA youth orchestras starting this academic year. From the first interaction with the orchestra coordinator, it has been a very pleasant and welcoming experience. We had no prior orchestra experience but my son was able to quickly adjust to it. The performance experience at the Northwestern concert hall was fantastic as well. I am also interacting directly with the conservatory management and other committee members as a volunteer (because I have relevant business experience). All I have to say is everyone is so collaborative and respectful. MYAC has provided not only a wonderful learning community for young musicians, but also one of the most inspiring stories arising out of the challenges of a pandemic. While many other music organizations simply threw up their hands and closed up shop, MYAC rolled up their sleeves and used hard work and ingenuity to provide an outdoor rehearsal/performance space that allowed their students to continue to learn, grow, interact, and strengthen the bonds with their fellow students. Midwest Young Artists is an outstanding organization in every way. As a professional violinist, my education and career path was fundamentally shaped by my four years of study and performance as a member of the MYAC Symphony Orchestra. I had the opportunity to meet kids from all over, who shared my interests and were at the highest levels of playing, helping me grow my skills and truly fall in love with music-making. The entire organization is run so smoothly, with so much care and love for each and every student, and provides the most incredible opportunities to its members. I was able to perform at Ravinia, the Harris Theatre, Millenium Park, on WFMT radio, and even on National Public Radio in Utah and in Boston, because I was placed in a quartet at MYAC and coached and cared for by the most amazing faculty. My 12 year old daughter started at MYA almost 2 years ago. We were immediately impressed with the professionalism of the staff -- from the office staff to the Conductor, Stevie Marks. We felt welcomed, and their orchestration of events is unparalleled, especially during COVID where they have gone to Herculean efforts to make it possibly for students to practice together, yet separate. Their communications are another bright spot -- we are never without detailed insight into the schedule of events. I might also mention that being a part of their Voices Rising has brought many unique opportunities for our daughter to participate on a larger stage as well as to sing for prominent conductors. What I especially love is that MYA is available to anyone, not only to the privileged...their benefactors have made certain no child who qualifies goes without this rich opportunity to learn.

MYA provides numerous musical opportunities such as performing in chambers not only orchestras and also entering some competitions. Now music is a big part of their lives and they are enjoying it. They just grew with music in MYA. One of wonderful experiences is that they learned how to give back their talents and advantages to community. Both girls are involved as mentors in YMS program which MYA gives free lessons to those who students from underserved schools. Great directors and faculty members and friendly staffs! My family loves MYA and we strongly recommend it!

My sister was a member of the very first MYA Orchestra when the group of 10-12 string players rehearsed in the basement of an Evanston church about 30 years ago. Fast-forward to today, when my 11-year-old son is a first-year member of the program. One thing that has remained consistent throughout the years has been Allan and Karen Dennis's unwavering commitment to and support of young musicians - you will find no other organization, arts or otherwise, with a greater passion for creating a positive experience for children. As music teachers ourselves, my wife and I are proud that our son is now a part of this wonderful program - thank you MYAC!

Our family has been part of MYAC for over 20 years. Our daughters (now ages 30 and 28) participated in various MYAC orchestras, choral groups, and chamber orchestras from grade school through high school. They always looked forward to spending their weekends at their "second home" with MYAC friends and peers who shared their love of music, and they continue to perform and enjoy playing as young adults. Special performances at Symphony Center, Harris Theatre, and other venues, along with memorable tours in Spain, Portugal, China, and South Korea have fostered friendships both for our daughters and my wife and myself that continue today. Forever thankful that MYAC was there to support, encourage, and foster a passion for great music for our daughters, and we look forward to making sure it's there for future generations.

My daughter is a member of the Symphony Orchestra in MYAC and an intensive chamber program. She joined MTAC 3 years ago and since she then fell in love with the program, teachers and all MYAC offer as a music institution.
She wants to pursue a carrier in music and MYAC offers a variety of programs to help her prepare for the auditions.

Many organizations focus entirely on results. This organization focuses on the heart, fostering a love for music, and the results far exceed anything imaginable. Not that long ago, my daughter was "that" child who was practically kicking her instrument in its case down the sidewalk on the way to lesson and who loathed practice. However, the very first day she was introduced to MYAC, she said that she HAD to be a part of what was going on there. She started in Philharmonia, successfully auditioned for Concert Orchestra the next year, and now is incredibly excited to be a part of the Symphony Orchestra. A once reluctant musician, she now hopes to be a performance major in college some day! Thank you MYAC for starting with the heart!

My daughter simply loves singing and we are incredibly fortunate to have an amazing conservatory right in our backyard! Stevi Marks is the tireless and passionate director of the choir and brings so much talent and dedication to the table. She is friendly and demanding and simply gets the best out of our children because she expects it. This place is a godsend for anyone musically inclined. My youngest son also receives private bass lessons here as they are a mecca for teachers and students to come together and progress. So so grateful for this gem of talent and kindness. The owners are inspirational and awesome, in the true sense of the word. Dr. Dennis is charismatic and so good with the children and his wife, Karen, is a quiet and modest powerhouse who gets so much done for everyone and doesn't think twice about it. We are so blessed!

My son is now a sophomore at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music, on a full benefit called the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship. He was a good music student, but it didn't really take off until he joined Midwest Young Artists. This became his second home and what he learned there about music is only surpassed by what he learned about being a good person. Dr. Dennis (DrD to most of us) believes strongly that his job is not only to make good music with kids but to make good kids with music. The impact on my boy has been and continues to be profound. MYA is located in the old stockade at Ft. Sheridan, and the site (near Lake Michigan) only adds to the allure. Dedicating 3-4 hours of every Saturday - on top of rehearsals and performances - seems like a big commitment at first. It quickly seems like not enough. The kids perform at places like Northwestern University, Ravinia and even Symphony Hall. Visiting teachers include the very top in the field; the kids and mentors become friends rapidly. This is altogether one of the most wonderful institutions around and it has been a privilege and an honor to my son and to me to be associated with MYA. I cannot say enough good things about it.

MYA is simply an incredible place and experience. My kid's school and private instructors recommended it for several years, and we just had a hard time finding the time. I wish now that I had him cancel other activities years ago. It is not a light commitment, the standards and performance are unbelievably high. But it is totally worth it all. Dr. Dennis is one of those teachers who gets kid musicians to perform at levels that they thought were impossible. I recommend MYA to any kids committed to their education and their music.

My family's relationship with MYAC started about 14 years ago with our daughter participating in one of the early youth orchestras. She grew and developed through the years. I watched carefully how people were treated and how they grew through the programs. Today, I serve on the board of directors because its a program you can support and believe in. Our students may not all become professional musicians, but they grow into responsible, conscientious adults who perform excellently in whatever endeavors they undertake. This is not an accident. It is the product of love, hard work, discipline, some fair competition, and passion.

My daughter is graduating after 10 years in MYA. She and I have grown over this time, and MYA became a material part of our lives. MYA doesn't just teach music. They teach music well. But they also teach our children character, discipline, compassion, cooperation, and a desire to excel without hurting others. Through the years I have heard parents from other music programs, who came to MYA extol its virtues. Their children became part of a team. While competitive, the young musicians are taught the larger lessons on what is takes to be a successful human. MYA's best advertisement of its success is its battalion of alumni who still cherish their time with MYA, still come back to visit and participate, and serve on its young professionals board.

As my daughter goes off to college to study music and business, I will continue to participate in and support MYA's activities because it's that important of an organization for young people.

MYA was the most magical orchestra experience for me back in the mid-90s when I auditioned and joined because my high school didn't have an orchestra program. It was so rewarding to have the chance to play with some of the most talented young musicians from the tri-state area, and to be led by Dr. Dennis and his passion for interpreting classical works and nurturing musicians in each section to sound their best and connect to the music emotionally, and to practice diligently. It led me to major in music and to have a life-long love of music. I enjoy being able to play in alumni concerts as an adult as well, which I've been able to do twice and got to experience a little bit more of that magic.

Midwest Young Artists was an amazing orchestral music experience for our budding clarinetist, who is now off studying clarinet performance at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. Had opportunities to perform and learn that he wouldn't have had anywhere else in the Chicago area. Made friends he'll keep and share music with for life. While in the middle of another international tour with a band that I'm currently in, I began reflecting on how I caught the tour and travel bug because of Midwest Young Artists. As a freshman in high school, I went on my first musical tour to Spain& Portugal, a trip that completely changed my life... the sense of wonder and excitement that came with traveling in a foreign country, performing music that you love with your friends for people from different cultures and backgrounds. I can still close my eyes (and do regularly) to imagine Dr. Dennis conducting Shostakovich's 5th Symphony and can hear all the instruments so perfectly as they bounce off the walls of a little Spanish plaza, circulate within the halls of a palace in Lisbon or waft into the night sky. It always brings tears to my eyes.

I don't think I'll ever be able to thank everyone at MYA enough for all of the love and opportunities & inspiration that you have afforded me and so many other young people.

How cool that even as a young man, I am still traveling and sharing music with people around the world. What a dream come true ... and it's all MYA's fault!!

I was a student in MYA from 7th-12th grade. The level of musicianship exhibited by the students and faculty is second to none. The quality that sets this organization from its competitors is culture. It is a perfect place for students to develop musically and personally. I got so much out of the program that after college i started volunteering for MYA to give back to the organization. Today, i serve as the president of MYA's Young Professionals Board. We work closely with the Board of Directors, faculty, and administrators. I would highly recommend MYA to anyone looking for a fulfilling volunteering opportunity where you can make as big or little of a contribution as your time allows.

Our son has been in MYA's jazz program for the last two years, and it's been a fantastic experience! He has learned so much, met some great people, and even travelled overseas with the group.

I've also volunteered periodically with the organization, so have seen the great work done by all of the support staff as well. Their focus is completely on bringing musical learning and enjoyment to the participants as well as the surrounding community, and they seem to focus on doing it as efficiently as possible, so are great stewards of the dollars made available to them.

Top notch organization overall, and expect to continue contributing to them as best we can, even when our son has moved on to college.

Passionate, talented people make MYA what it is: a great place to advance musical skills in ways not provided through private lessons or highschool orchestras. I have great memories, and had outstanding mentors and teachers who only wanted the best for all of us. The MYA family was crucial to my development as a musician, and though I didn't pursue music as my ultimate career path, I still carry a deep appreciation for music, theory, and playing my instrument. That wouldn't be nearly as true without my experience with MYA.

Last night I watched, along with other parents, a delightful recital by children who had worked very hard all year to prepare for this evening. These children, along with countless others, have received the opportunity to learn an instrument, receive lessons, and participate in a first rate orchestra program whether or not their incredibly supportive families were able to cover the cost. The music the children are exposed to is incredible, and the character that is built in being from being a part of this community is priceless. I am forever grateful to what Midwest Young Artists gives to each young musician, their families, and the community as a whole! My son literally "grew up" under Dr. Dennis' baton, and I'm grateful for his musicianship, but even more grateful for the young man he has become.

MYA is a great organization especially as music in the public schools is being cut. The organization helped my daughter become a serious musician and a great collaborator in a large group (Symphony) and a smaller group (chamber). MYA has an upbeat feel and Allan and Karen Dennis are the best for organizing events and activities that promote fun while still demanding kids to reach for the stars and do their very best. MYA promotes long term relationships and learning and helps high schoolers decide on college choices.

I had known about MYA for quite a long time, but it didn't occur to me to join the program until my brother had joined and until I heard last year that the Symphony Orchestra was doing Mahler's "Titan" Symphony No. 1. First of all, it is my absolute favorite Mahler symphony and it was a thrill for me to think that a youth orchestra would be able to play such music. So I went to hear it and this was a great inspiration for me to want to join and so, this year, I'm finally in MYA, along with several of my good friends from High School and from elsewhere. I've been part of the MYA community for the past 7 years. My oldest son started playing in one of their orchestras 7 years ago, and his brother began last year. It is a truly amazing place, where learning, community, and above all, music are nurtured in young people. Saturdays are orchestra rehearsal days, and they have been my sons' favorite day of the week since they began playing there. There is a place where everyone can feel comfortable, and while excellence is valued, and the standards are very high, it is an inclusive, non-elitist place. High standards apply equally to how you treat others, as well as how you play your instrument. In addition to all the great qualities of community and character building, MYA offers unparalleled musical opportunities - master classes with renowned musicians, orchestra performances in world-class venues, weekly coaching for chamber music, as well as orchestra, opportunities to connect with both peers and mentors every single week. I was first introduced to MYA in 1999 when I brought my first chamber ensemble from Columbus, Ohio to the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. I was so impressed by the MYA student support in the audience to those performing on the stage. They cheered each other and genuinely showed care and respect for each ensemble. Over the years, our friendship grew at each Fischoff competition with the students from MYA, as well as from all over the USA, competing in this prestigious competition and then at the Discover National Chamber Music Competition. What a wonderful event MYA has created to support young artists enjoying the process of making chamber music together! The past few years, over 60 students, friends, and family from CMC (Chamber Music Connection) have traveled to the Chicago area to participate or observe this marvelous event hosted by MYA. Approximately three years ago, I was invited to teach at the MYA Chamber Music Summer Institute. They greet the artists, the students, and the staff with open arms showing great respect and gratitude for each musical milestone accomplished. MYA is not only the reason I was able to qualify for a scholarship to college, but a huge part of why I was able to get in the first place. If it wasn't for the 1st class musical education I received there, my playing ability wouldn't have been anywhere near impressive enough to qualify for a scholarship. If it wasn't for the 1st class mentoring and personal attention I received I would never have matured enough to be successful as an undergraduate. From a Millenium Park concert with the Lang-Lang scholars, to a CPS school tour of “Peter and the Wolf,” I can say without question that Midwest Young Artists has been the most significant musical experience of my life. Starting as a clueless 8th grader, I played some of the great symphonies, participated in chamber groups, and was introduced into the expansive world of music theory. Without a doubt in my mind, I can say that I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Midwest Young Artists. I joined MYA when I was in seventh grade playing the violin. In addition to playing in orchestra, I was part of a unique chamber group in which every violinist had to take a rotation on viola. Because of my positive experience learning a new instrument, and the wonderful guidance and support of my chamber coach, I continued to play viola in the MYA Symphony Orchestra. My chamber music experience opened many doors- including that to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on a viola scholarship.

The chamber music program at MYA is extraordinary. Every one of my coaches had us look beyond the score. We looked at theory, history, and ultimately what made our piece unique. In addition to classical literature, I had the opportunity to perform the latest hip-hop/rock quartets. This allowed me to explore the wide range of repertoire that is available in chamber music and share it with audiences. Sunday Soirees at MYA allowed my chamber groups to showcase what we had been working on throughout the year. One of my chamber groups performed our hip-hop quartet as part of an MYA outreach program in Chicago. I was so fortunate to be part of an outreach program that could bring music to everyone.

From local performances at some of the greatest venues in the Chicago area, to international tours, I had opportunities of a lifetime with MYA. One trip in particular was the 2005 tour to Spain & Portugal. Hands down, this was one of the best trips of my life. I didn’t know I could see so many places, make that many memories, and perform that many concerts in just three weeks. There is no better way to see the world than to travel and perform with your friends and fellow musicians.

I may have “graduated” from MYA, but I know that the door is always open anytime. Annual alumni concerts, and events allow me to keep in touch with my MYA family throughout the years. The guidance, support, and encouragement I received from Dr. Dennis and the rest of the faculty put me where I am today. I am currently an elementary & middle school orchestra director. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for my wonderful experience in Midwest Young Artists.

I joined MYA back in 2003 when I was a freshman in high school. My first rehearsal in the symphony orchestra was a disaster, not being able to play on the same level as my peers around me. Declaring to my parents my intention to quit, they took me to speak with Dr. Dennis, the director, in person. He encouraged me to stay, telling me that he wouldn't have accepted my audition into the orchestra had he thought I wouldn't be able to handle it. His encouragement didn't fully convince me, but I decided to stay. The next four years rushed by me. I had a great network of friends that I've made through MYA, along with a formidable professional network with the staff of MYA who all were very accomplished musicians themselves. Through MYA I had the opportunity to encounter different cultures abroad in Spain and Portugal, to discover great classical music, to perform along with world-class musicians such as Pepe Romero and Leonard Slatkin IN world-class venues such as Symphony Center in Chicago, among so many other things. I still keep in contact with Dr. Dennis among other MYA staff. The passion, love, time, and energy they put into this organization and its students cannot be measured. I was a member of the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra and chamber music programs for 4 years from '98-2002. Simply put, this organization provides the finest and most comprehensive music education available for pre-college students.

In addition to seemingly limitless musical opportunities (world travel, celebrity masterclasses taught by current CSO musicians, etc) MYA offers students a place to hang out and be themselves.

Everyone can be comfortable in their own skin at the home-like MYA center. There is no judgement, and the prevailing attitude is that of tolerance and understanding. There is no need for anti-bullying talks, because there are no bullies at MYA.

Having performed in an Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra in college, I can certify that the level of instruction at MYA meets and generally exceeds that of the MYA orchestra program. The programs at MYA allow students not only to grow as musicians, but also as a community. It is a safe, exciting avenue to creatively express and learn music, that I will never forget.

As a music teacher I draw great inspiration from what I learned in my tenure at MYA, and was excited when I was able to have my own students become a part of the program.

I loved being a part of MYA when I was in high school 1991-1995. It was a chance to play real orchestral material with others whose talent level was way beyond that of a typical high school orchestra. Concerts and rehearsals were always a moving experience and I still remember the intricacies of each section of some of the pieces we played. Dr. Dennis always rehearsed us with such precision and attention to detail, that the symphony felt like an old friend by the time we got to performance time. I love that this wonderful orchestra continues to achieve and attract talent from the Midwest area.

My son has had the privilege of participating in the music programs at MYA for 5 years. Through the years, he has risen through three levels of orchestras into the Symphony Orchestra, and he participates in the outstanding Intensive Chamber Music Program. He has played in the Honors Wind Symphony, and has had the opportunity to perform in the Walgreen's Concerto Competition, and the Discover Chamber Music Competition. Although he's only in the ninth grade, he has already performed in every major music venue in the Chicago area: Symphony Center, Lyric Opera House, Harris Theater, Ravinia's Bennett-Gordon Hall, Northwestern's Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, and Waukegan's Genesee Theater. These have all been incredible experiences for him. The range of opportunities that MYA offers students of every age and level in classical, jazz, choral and chamber music is phenomenal. But that's not what makes MYA so special.
What makes MYA truly special lies within: it is the amazing ensemble directors, faculty and staff that have created the warm and nurturing environment at MYA, where each student is encouraged to strive to be the best musician and citizen that they can be. The caliber of the faculty is second to none, but it is their passion for music and their unending dedication to the growth and success of their students that stands out. They inspire students to work hard. They promote camaraderie over competitiveness. Students of all ages, from all edges of the Chicago-land area come together each week to make music, but in the process, they gain so much more. Work ethic, teamwork, discipline, confidence, self-esteem, community and life-long friendships are what I see being developed each week. Many students from MYA go on to attend the best music conservatories in the country. Some students continue on to top universities and colleges in order to pursue other professions. The tools students gain at MYA will help them be successful in anything they choose to do in life. But what will they remember about MYA for the rest of their lives? The warm fire, the homemade goodies, the unending support of their directors and coaches, the sense of community, and the incredible joy, and excitement of having made beautiful music together.

MYA aroused in my son a passion for music that will last a lifetime. Thanks to Director Allan Dennis’ unwavering commitment to maintaining a competitive yet nurturing atmosphere, MYA delivers a top-notch music ensemble program that fosters community outreach and camaraderie among its students. MYA has changed my son's life— no more ACDC; hello Bach and and Basie!

This is the 5th year of our daughter participating in the vocal groups within Midwest Young Artists. We have seen our daughter grow musically through the years, both through experiences of places that she has performed, the musicians that she has met from areas spanning out across the greater Chicago-land area, and the knowledge of music theory that has been provided through special classes. The contacts that she has made within the organization have been tremendous, including the directors that she has been exposed to. She has learned about recording sessions, performed within the United Nations chambers, Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as being exposed to the wonderful theatres of Chicago - at Northwestern University, Harris Theatre in Millenium Park, Lyric Opera and Symphony Hall. We think that someday she will look back in awe at what she was able to be a part of at such an early age. Many thanks to all that are involved in this tremendous organization!

I am an alum, employee, donor, and teacher at Midwest Young Artists (MYA). This organization is a huge part of my life! I cannot imagine being part of something better then MYA. As a student, MYA provided such amazing experiences and challenges for me as a young violinist. I acted as co-concert master in our 10 year anniversary concert, I toured Europe, I competed in competitions, and I made lifelong friends. As an employee, I am always faced with new and exciting challenges and responsibilities that are always rewarding when I see my efforts evolve. Most recently, a benefit concert for the Ronald McDonald House Charities at Harris Theater. As a teacher, I watch my students grow and become great little musicians in such a nurturing atmosphere. It is truly a rewarding experience!!

For six years, MYA provided the musical, social, and even spiritual center for our family. Saturday at MYA was the highlight of our week. When my eighth grade daughter participated in two chamber groups, Concert and Symphony Orchestras, she rehearsed from 8 am to 3 pm straight every Saturday. She grew immensely as a musician and gained in confidence and stamina. Meanwhile, my much younger daughter and I hung out in the lobby, making friends and enjoying the warm, positive, family atmosphere of the place. The little one grew up surrounded by her sister's music--when she was a toddler, she'd hum various themes from "Scheherazade" while playing with her toys. At age eight, she is now a promising musician herself. Even my older son, who has high-functioning autism, participated by taping Sunday soirees and converting the tapes to DVDs as part of his school's work-study program. In addition to all the opportunities it provides, the greatness of MYA lies in the inspirational and visionary people who founded and direct this wonderful organization. It is astounding that Dr. and Mrs. Dennis could have built such a rich and multifaceted institution in a such a short period of time. They are tireless individuals, dedicated to their work. After one winter concert, I clapped and cheered as Dr. Dennis and his orchestra, clad in tuxedos and fancy dresses, took their triumphant bows, then at midnight, I watched Dr. D and a handful of those same kids--now dressed in their dungarees-- unload music stands and equipment off the truck at MYA in the bitter cold. The Zen proverb, "After enlightenment, the laundry," certainly applied. MYA will remain a part of our lives through the alumni concerts and through keeping in touch with those friends we met in the lobby, whose children are now off at college or conservatory, taking with them the skills, experiences, and memories they got from those wonderful Saturdays at the Fort.

This is my son's 5th year at MYA. Every year, the Saturday mornings/afternoons he spends there are one of the highlights of the week. He has been part of the orchestra program, music theory, composition, and chamber music. The orchestra directors display a striking combination of empathy, professionalism, high expectations, love of music, humor and genuine interest in the students they work with, as people, not just musicians. It is a place for everyone to learn and grow and nurture their love of, and talent for, music. Hard work and responsibility to the group are emphasized, but each child is recognized as an individual. All staff are welcoming and inclusive, and there are many great ways for parents to get involved and be part of the MYA family. The orchestra members are very fortunate to get the opportunity to perform in extraordinary venues, such as Ravinia's Gordon Bennett Hall, Pick-Staiger Auditorium at Northwestern, and the Harris Theatre. All this, and master classes, great chamber music coaches, concessions where the home bakers can shine, a roaring fire on cold days, and a beautiful setting for a walk or run while your student is rehearsing! We love MYA.

I was a student at MYA from eighth grade until the end of my senior year. I participated was a member of a three jazz bands, a member of the top symphony orchestra, played in saxophone quartet for three years, and played in the MYA Eighth Blackbird ensemble. Midwest Young Artists helped me to become a better musician than I could otherwise have become. The atmosphere there was always friendly, as well as supportive. Furthermore, I was able to grow with musicians that I would most likely have never come into contact with if not for MYA. In the ensembles, I was able to play with musicians who were all serious about music, which is something I could never have found in high school. MYA also taught me important life lessons. When one participates in a serious ensemble like any of the ones at MYA, you learn a serious sense of commitment and dedication. You learn to be always be early (if possible), and you learn to always come as prepared as possible. These are invaluable lessons that most people don't learn until college. MYA has helped me to become a better me than I otherwise could have.

My three children have participated in Midwest Young Artists in its excellent orchestral and chamber programs. The nurturing atmosphere at MYA is truly remarkable. In my experience, other youth music organizations often bring out the worst aspects of musical competition in young people. MYA has provided a magical oasis for each of them to freely express their love of music and musical performance with peers who share those same passions. They have all developed strong friendships and memories at MYA. Dr. Dennis and the other faculty members inspire all of the young musicians to do their very best while minimizing feelings of internal competition, resulting in a safe, warm place for these young people to grow musically and to grow as young adults. Bravo!

I have had the pleasure of serving as board president for 5 years at Midwest Young Artists. Not only does MYA have tireless people that teach music, but as just as importantly, they foster an environment where young people learn about life. Support of others, teamwork, and community service are among the life lessons learned. Experience to MYA does not guarantee a life in music. It does guarantee that a child will know that through hard work, great things can happen. MYA has travelled extensively to Germany, Spain, Portugal, China and South Korea, trips which were met by students and foreigners alike with an awe of music. MYA's future is bright. I look forward to being involved on this ride.

My three children have been a part of the MYA family for 9 musically and socially fulfilling years. When my oldest daughter was 12 she discovered MYA and gradually got the whole family involved with its mission. My daughter auditioned on the oboe and the violin. Afterwards she cried. She was convinced she did terrible. When the letter came with the good news that she was accepted into two different orchestra she was thrilled! Her Saturdays, most kids' day off of school, began at 8:00 a.m. with a chamber group followed by a short break and then 5 hours of orchestra rehearsals. Sounds, grueling. Not for kids who love music. My daughter found a home at MYA where there were kids, just like her, who chose to spend their weekend surrounded by music. She grew as a musician under the guidance of talented orchestra directors who understood how to bring out the best in every member of the orchestra, not only as musicians, but as caring and responsible members of the bigger MYA family. The opportunities my daughter had to perform in world renown venues in Chicago, Spain, Portugal, China and Korea will live with her forever. The 12 year old who decided to spend her weekends playing music at MYA is now 21 years old and finishing up her music education degree at the University of Illinois. She is determined to start a string program for young children in an under served area of the world. Sounds, idealistic, but I see her determination and I think she will truly be able to reach her goal.

Our family continues to be deeply involved with MYA. Our younger two children are now filling their weekends with music, as well. They play in chamber groups, orchestras and sing. How many 11 year olds can brag that they sang with the prestigious Chicago Symphony Orchestra? Well, my two 11 year olds did just that as members of MYA's Voices Rising Children's Choir. They loved being a part of the Chicago Symphony's Welcome Yule performances at Chicago Symphony Center during the month of December. Pretty cool, huh!? Play cello on stage at the Chicago Opera House? Yep, did that, too. Sing at Carnegie Hall? Yes, last spring. If your children, like mine, also have a love for music, they will find a warm, nurturing home in the MYA family. It's also a fun place to hang out. Just ask the MYA kids! Our lives have truly been enriched by the power of music MYA has share with our whole family.

The work MYA does is truly irreplaceable. The reasons are two-fold. One, there are simply an extraordinarily small number of music programs nationwide of the scale and caliber that MYA operates at. Second, even less - MYA is quite possibly unique, in fact - are the number of these schools that operate with warmth, heart and community in mind.

I am an alumni who has never once considered a career in music. Providentially, however, my talents allowed me to be placed in MYA's top orchestra through all four years of high school. Though there were at least a dozen students superior to me in ability (most considering music school), I never once felt denied opportunity or excluded in any way. MYA does this for people. It builds communities.

That idea - that music builds community and that community is an ends as well as a means - is not unique to MYA. It is unique to programs that produce musicians as talented as MYA, or offer opportunities to as many students as MYA. I can't say enough good things about the place. It remains my home away from home.

Dr. Dennis,

It’s 9pm at night and I should be packing up my apartment getting ready to depart Jacksonville Florida and return back to Chicago. However, Mahler 5 started blaring out of my radio and I just got excited! I know that piece! In fact, I know just about every note of that piece. I started to remember back to all those wonderful Saturday morning in Ft Sheridan rehearsing with some of the best musicians in the Chicago area. I wanted to let you that I enjoyed every minute of it. The lessons learned at MYA are life lessons that I take to heart every day at work & in college.

This was my first summer since I was 16 away from Ravinia Festival. I received a last minute call at the end of April from the Railroad CSX to come down to Jacksonville Florida. I helped their network planning group with simulation modeling that they’re doing to plan for high speed rail, and new freight traffic. However, working indoors in the heat of Florida is very different than the cool summer evenings outside listening to the CSO at Ravinia. I simply miss classical music.

I hope you had an excellent summer. I believe MYA went to Germany this summer? I look forward to the next alumni concert. And don’t be too hard on the Bassoon section. They really are paying attention.

Both of our daughters enjoyed MYA for 8 and 9 years, through grade school and high school. They participated in multiple orchestras, choruses and chamber groups. MYA was such an important part of their life, and the one activity that we never had to "prod" them to do -- every Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon they were ready to spend the day at MYA with friends, learning and performing great music with excellent conductors and teachers. MYA exposed them to so much, including other cultures via performance tours to Spain, Portugal, China and South Korea. The lessons learned from MYA have extended far beyond music -- the benefit of hard work; pursuing your passion; trying new things; and being with peers who share your interest and commitment.

Midwest Young Artists is an organization that provides excellent adjunct programming for students studying music that require additional stimulation not provided in their school situation. Students meet weekly with dedicated faculty who are committed to creating an environment of excellence. What makes Midwest Young Artists different from other programs is the commitment to core educational values which are presented in a supportive manner. They develop a wonderful camaraderie with other students which lasts well into adulthood.
