Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Economic Development, Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Urban & Community Economic Development, Water, Water Resources, Wetlands Conservation & Management

Mission: Keeping our environment healthy is critical to the well being of all forms of life and nature, which led to the formation of NYenvironcom, a nonpartisan registered nonprofit environmental policy and outreach group established in 2018 by Alex Scilla and Grace Woodard with a mission to promote thoughtful land use and development in New York State that considers the environment, community, and economic values. We believe that it is important for communities to have access to clear, accessible information about their local ecology, in order to make and advocate for informed decisions about local land use. Most current ecological information available to our community is incomplete and out-of-date. We strive to fill this information gap and increase awareness. NYenvironcom provides fact-based, accurate data that citizens, local decision makers, and land developers can use to understand and consider the full range of effects new actions and building projects will have on the land, water, and air in our neighborhoods. NYenvironcom works within communities located on the northern side of the southern tier of the Shawangunk Mountains, and Neversink Valley to the Delaware River in Orange and Sullivan Counties in New York state. We believe empowering communities to become an active part of what is happening in their watersheds and neighborhoods leads to positive change. Our work impacts the well-being of our communities and citizens’ ability to advocate for the health of our local environment. There are three main components of our work: Advocacy - led by The Deerpark Rural Alliance (DRA), which serves as the local advocacy arm of our work. Data - led by our programs. Our water quality program, WaterInsight, is a community training and data-collection program that teaches volunteers how to perform do-it-yourself water data collection methods to advance science-based preservation or remediation in land planning. TerraINscape is a land-mapping program launched in 2020, which trains volunteers to develop maps to understand how land impacts water and vice versa. Outreach and Education - presenting the results of our advocacy and data programs, and sharing these platforms with the public for general access and use.

At NYec, it's about actions over talk. Real-world projects, real results. Funding and resources are dedicated for programs first, administration second.

We have supported the Deerpark Rural Alliance from the beginning and the DRA works closely with NYenvirocom. They fiscally support the DRA. The volunteers work hard for the organization. DRA is an advocacy wing for NYenvironcom. The endorsements for NYenvironcom will help with future fundraising and organization building. We are under serious environmental threat here in Orange County near the confluence of the Neversink and Delaware Rivers. These organizations do important work.

I recently attended a board meeting of NY Environcom and met a diverse and dedicated group of people who have made tremendous progress in building local support and understanding of urgent water quality issues (and threats) in Orange and Sullivan Counties. These volunteers spend countless hours fund-raising for projects and talking with people at community events to increase awareness of the need for monitoring environmental issues in their rural setting. They are impressive!

New York Environcom is helping to preserve the unique rural character and well being of the Neversink River, Guymard Lake, and Godeffroy/Cuddebackville area, where my family settled in the late 1600s and where we still own land. NY Environcom has stood up to those who ignore local land use codes and environmental regulations in the area and has developed water testing and engaged the community.
I greatly appreciate their work.

Worked as a volunteer for NYenvironcom early on. This organization is truly a valuable force for environmental conservation working to preserve an often overlooked yet supremely important piece of the ecosystem in upstate NY - the Basha Kill wetlands and the Neversink River. Alex is passionately committed to the organizations conservation goals and my experience working here was extremely enriching.

A small non-profit trying to put polluters in the spotlight. In rural communities it's difficult to identify polluters but this group is doing it. Trying to keep our community as pristine as possible.

Dedicated crew trying to protect an under served rural area where polluters are ignoring clean water regulations, building codes, land covenants and steamrolling over local enforcement attempts. Working on a shoestring budget, against companies and much better funded organizations.

I and my family are grateful there are people who take time and resources to share our concerns about our area land and water use. We as they do oppose over development in our rural area. Nyenvironcom has helped us find professionals to evaluate effects of proposed developments. They have been instrumental during presentations to our Town Boards in an effort to inform decision makers of effects of changes. They found violations to our streams that directly effect our health my monitoring discharge regularly.

I have been involved with NYenvironcom's projects for almost a year now and I have seen great work from them. I believe that they have a clear vision and truly care about the work they are doing. They are monitoring several stream water quality using high frequency sensors and mapping wetland habitats using drones. The organization also loves to get volunteers involved. The best thing is- they are just getting start.

I am a Board Member of the Bashakill Area association and coordinator of the Water testing Program for the Bashakill WMA. One of the many activities NYenvironcom is involved with includes water testing of the waters which leave the Bashakill and proceed south through the Delaware Watershed. We often share resources and discuss local environmental issues. As the fiscal sponsor of the DeerPark rural alliance NYenvironcom has provided valuable support in filing a Federal Lawsuit against a Polluter of the Bashakill.
