Mission: Our mission is to help build sustainable inclusive communities.
Results: Here are two examples of how we are working with people to move communities from bias and discrimination to diversity and inclusion: Youth: African American teens in St. Clair Shores reported being harassed, accused of “sneaking” in from Detroit, lowering test scores and causing trouble. With the Roundtable’s help, a small intergenerational group of community members helped show St. Clair Shores residents how diverse their community really is, organizing the first Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and other community events. Youth are now collaborating across the three St. Clair Shores school districts to work more effectively together, educate the community, and reduce the harassment of minority students. Community: Plymouth Canton is a diverse community, yet municipal leadership positions have not reflected that diversity. With the Roundtable’s help, a small group of diverse citizens worked with the leadership of Plymouth Canton Community Schools to increase minority hires. Minority hires this year made up 25% of the total school hires – a record high. This small community group continues to push its community, attempting to diversify law enforcement, and create a diversity and inclusion curriculum for its schools.
