I am a Miami native who has seen the decline in our greatest resource- Biscayne Bay and National Park over the last four decades. In just the last decade Miami Waterkeeper has notched enormous wins for our waterways through legal challenges and advocacy that is based on science. Miami Waterkeeper has exposed and held to account the destruction of hundreds of acres of corals during the Port of Miami dredging, compelled the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to revoke the Turkey Point operating license extension until the impacts of sea level rise is evaluated and addressed, and worked to pass a fertilizer ban, just to name a few. They monitor water quality throughout the bay on a weekly basis, and run many on-going community-based programs. They truly are the gold standard.
Miami Waterkeeper has experienced tremendous growth in both capabilities and impact over my 12 years of involvement. Our science-based approach has led to the actions we take setting statewide and, in some cases, nationwide standards.
Miami Waterkeeper is a serious organization that advocates for the environment on behalf of our community. MWK team is passionate and couldn’t be different as they are led a phenomenal and inspiring leader.
Miami Waterkeeper plays an active, critical role in the community, protecting its waters and keeping the population safe from pollution risks. The organization creates opportunities for volunteering and participation at various levels of engagement, ages, and abilities. They are a true asset to the community.
MWK has made an incredible difference in the Miami Dade and Broward communities advocating for a more resilient coastline and much needed cleaner water. They have been successful many times over in stopping policies that hurt our environment and water. Rachel Silverstein has her finger on the pulse of every environmental issue that affects us. She raises awareness when few see an issue; and other organizations flock to join in the fight.
I can't be prouder to be part of Miami Waterkeeper. It is a fantastic organization that protects the waters of South Florida.
I have been involved with Miami Waterkeeper since I worked with them as in intern from January 2020 until December 2020 when I graduated from University of Miami with my Masters in Professional Science in Marine Conservation. I was so appreciative of the organization and their capacity to impact our community that ultimately I became a Board member. I have been involved with many organizations but MWK stands out for their incredible effectiveness on making change happen. I value their core principal to have the science lead the policy.
As a lifelong water person born and raised in Miami I have seen first hand the impact pollution, storm water run off, municipality issues on sewage repair, climate change, and a host of other issues have impacted the water we drink, swim in, and rely on - with particular emphasis on our bays, canals, and ocean. The only organization that stands up to this and has consistently delivered results is Miami Waterkeeper!
I was a junior ambassador with the Miami Waterkeepers and I really enjoyed it. The program gave me an opportunity to advocate and fight for Florida waterways in ways I didn’t know I could.
Miami Water Keeper has a very welcoming environment. They have taught me so much of what I can do for my environment even. Really changed my perspective on how we all play essential roles in helping our ecosystem thrive. The instructores are also very understanding and demonstrate they care. Seeing them speak about saving the environment with such passion really inspired me to care more for our earth.
Amazing organization! I am a Junior Ambassador for Miami Waterkeeper and I have learned so much and had some amazing experiences with them. They do so much to protect our water.
Miami Waterkeeper has truly altered my entire way of thinking when it comes to defending, supporting, and solving issues concerning South Florida’s waters. As a non-profit deeply connected to the unique environment South Florida carries, their mission to shelter it while remaining a close-knit community is unlike any other non-profit I have had the pleasure to work with. As someone who is lucky enough to be part of this community, I recommend anyone remotely interested in our waters here in South Florida to participate in any event or curriculum help by Miami Waterkeeper.
I am participating in Miami Waterkeeper’s Junior Ambassador Program. I’ve learned so much about advocacy and the importance of maintaining the health of our waterways. I am so grateful that I had this opportunity and I most definitely recommend you participate in any Miami Waterkeeper program or event. They truly are amazing!
