We have followed this great company since 1982. Our daughter Nicole was a founding dancer.

For more than 40 years at the forefront of Mexican folkloric dance in Chicago, the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago is still going strong. I am a Mexican musician who has had the privilege to accompany this group on many performances since the mid 1990s. Their choice of music has always offered me a chance to develop my repertoire and to grow as a musician. Both Pepe and Matie Ovalle are a cultural institution in themselves. I'd recommend one of their shows to anyone.

We have performed with this dance company for over 25 years, providing live music for their dance programs. We have also hired them on several occasions to perform with us. As artistic collaborators we have seen them, under the artistic direction of founders Jose and Matie Ovalle and the leadership of Executive Director Henry Roa, present a wide variety of Mexican regional dances, original choreographies, and gorgeous costumes. The company has traveled in the United States and abroad and figures among Illinois' top non-profits in its class. They have always been top notch professionals.
I am proud to say that Sones de México Ensemble has shared the stage with this incredible company, providing the soundtrack to their spectacular choreographic creations. Together, we have not only entertained but educated, not merely performed but preserved the rich cultural legacy of Mexico.
Pepe and Mati Ovalle have an unparalleled dedication to their craft. Their commitment to excellence is evident in the precision of their choreographies, the intensity of their rehearsals, and the transcendence of their performances. They nurture talent with the same passion with which they preserve tradition, ensuring that each new generation of dancers is steeped in the lore and the love of their art form.
Through the years, I have seen their dancers evolve, mirroring the evolution of our own ensemble. We've grown together, pushed boundaries together, and crafted a narrative for Mexican folkloric art that resonates with diverse audiences. Pepe and Mati's work has allowed us to not only accompany dance but to compose and adapt our music to fit the narratives they seek to tell through movement.

The best years of my life were spent dancing with MFDC. Being able to share the beauty of our Culture felt amazing!
The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago continues to amaze audiences across the city and across the nation! A visual history of Mexico's cultural heritage is brought to life in a vibrant presentation of music and dance. Whether I'm working on a production backstage, or enjoying as a patron - the presentations fill me with joy and pride!
I joined the Dance company in 2007, and I was in a music career. The company was immensely beneficial to my musicianship and the leadership helped me improve as an individual as a whole. I got the opportunity to develop many skills, including musicianship through the dance company. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to learn a new skill for free. Dancing for the company only made me grow as a human being as a hole and many of the discipline, and critical thinking I learned as a member of the company, I still carry in my career in both finance and Music.
As a Mexican immigrant, I learned so much about Mexican music, not only dance, through the Dance company.
I danced with MFDC for over 6 years and I can confidently say they were some of the best years of my life. Through my journey with MFDC, I was able to grow personally and professionally, as well as I created many experiences and relationships with people around the Chicagoland area and beyond. MFDC embodies culture, discipline, and leadership - what a fantastic nonprofit! Thank you Mati and Pepe for your leadership!

This is an amazing company. I was one of the original founding members in 1982. I have seen it grow from a small community troupe to an internationally known professional dance company. It is into its 41st year and is recognized as a Chicago Cultural Treasure.
I started dancing with MFDC since I was 5 years old. Mati is an incredible dance teacher. As I advanced and grew in the company I transitioned into the older group con el maestro Pepe. I learned so much with Pepe. It was an amazing experience being part of such an amazing dance company. Mati and pepe are amazing instructors! They have a great passion to educate and teach their dancers and the community about our Mexican Culture. Thank you to this amazing group for the wonderful opportunities, the amazing friendships and the incredible memories I will cherish forever!
Saw the show at The Athenaeum Center on August 26, 2022.
It was the first time, since the pandemic began that this big type of show was presented and it was questionable whether the public would come out. But it neared a sellout and the audience was great.
It was sensational. One critic stated "Electric" "Energetic" "Wonderful"
Last year MFDC was named a Chicago Cultural Treasure

MFDC celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a performance at The Athenaeum Center, 2936 N. Southport Ave. It was accompanied by Sones de Mexico Ensemble.
Great show. One prospective funder wrote "Electric" "Energetic" "Wonderful".
My son and daughter, Miguel and Arianna were both dancers from the ages of 5 and 8 years old until they attended college. The years that we spent as a family with dancers, teachers, organizations and others are priceless. Pepe, Mati, parents and the older dancers were an integral part of my children’s lives. Although my husband and I were able to teach our children about discipline, dedication, giving to others and our culture, what they learned witn MFDC was instrumental in their growth. This really enforced my belief that “It takes a village to raise a child!”
As a family, We gave our time and dedication, but the dance company gave us love, patience and leadership skills that have been key reasons for Arianna’s and Miguel’s success!
Forever grateful!

Thank you so much Martha. You got us to the Top Rated level. Mr. Roa
My time in the Mexican Folkloric Dance Company was a great experience. I danced for over 12 years from the age of 6-18. I recommend this nonprofit to anyone as Pepe and Mati Ovalle are phenomenal leaders and experts in Mexican culture. I was able to develop long lasting relationships with great people and also in the city of Chicago. I hope others take advantage of this great nonprofit like I did.

Thanks Mike, I do not remember you because my memory left me a decade ago because I am now 89 years old. Your story really helps. Thanks again Mr. Roa
My sons, Jose and Michaelangelo, started dancing with MFDC when they were 5 and 7 respectively. It was the most impactful experience for them and us as a family. Thru the excellent instruction by Mati Ovalle and later Pepe Ovalle the learned so much more than "just the dance." My sons and I build life long bonds with the other families, they learned about our Mexican heritage, history behind each dance, geography (where each dance came from), and team building. I remember a visit to a museum and my sons asked "is Frida from Oaxaca?" Stunned by the question because we had never discussed Oaxaca. I asked why they thought she was from Oaxaca -- and they said (3 months into them dancing) she (Frida Kahlo) is wearing the traditional wedding outfit from Oaxaca. This was one of many, many, many priceless moments from their rich experience at MFDC.

This $140,000.00 3-year grant made the company an official Chicago Cultural Treasure.
For the first time, the City of Carbondale (the "capital" of southern Illinois) hosted an authentic folkloric dance company during the annual Halloween weekend events lineup, and it was THIS company of amazing, top-notch, highly talented and personable dancers and educator-presenters. One spectator said, "It was the best event I've ever seen downtown!" We are a town that takes pride in presenting a wide-variety of outstanding events, so this was a grand compliment. Mex Folk Dance Co. of Chicago was presented by SI CABE: Southern Illinois Culture & Arts in Bilingual Education, because the arts of all people "fit" in Carbondale! Invite this outstanding company of dancers/educators to your town soon! You will not regret it!

mexfolroa 08/08/2022
Thank you Colleen. We had a very wonderful time in Carbondale. Hope to return soon. Henry
I was a dancer on and off for a couple years. I started at about 10yrs old and went back as an adult couple times. It has always been a great experience I love every opportunity to join the company on anniversaries.
A tentative new date for a performance at The Varsity Theater in Carbondale, IL is October 30, 2021. Hope the pandemic does not cause another postponement.

mexfolroa 08/17/2021
The theater is a converted movie house with no accommodations for 30 plus dancers and the stage is not large enough for that many dancers. Thus the booking has not been done. Another venue being considered such as those at Southern Illinois University.
The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company has been a very big part of my family and my life. My name is Salvador Hernández, and I was a member from 1994 to 2009.
I had over a dozen cousins of mine participate in the group at one point or another, and I think it’s clear that we all took our own experiences from the group during our tenure there.
My particular experience has been an enjoyable one even though I was not sure it would be at first. The company was a commitment that I’d had my doubts about being able to fulfill because of the demand that was required to be a part of the group. While at first it seemed burdensome to dedicate sometimes nearly 6 hours a week to rehearsals, after a couple of years the rehearsals and performance schedules did not phase me. The reason this became second nature was because of the dancing we learned, the friendships that we made, and the good times we had working together. We needed to work hard when it was time to get down to business, so that we can help push each other to get to the end result, which was a solid representation of our culture through dance on stage.
During my 15 years participating in the company, I can honestly say that I made some friendships that will last my entire life time, including meeting my best friend.
Today I am happy that our experience with the group has been some thing that we’ve been able to share with our four children, and they follow in our footsteps in performing some of the folk dances that we were able to represent some years ago.
It is no secret that my oldest son is ready to join the company at the next opportunity he has. This has been I dream of his since he began to dabble in the folkloric genre.
I am very grateful for all the years that the instructors and all the people behind the scenes over the years have dedicated to the group to allow it to have made it this far.
I wish for nothing but continued success for this group as I believe their mission continues to be to cultivate and promote our heritage.

mexfolroa 08/07/2022
I finally found how to comment on your story. Your story is what funders like to hear. How MFDC impacted your life, how it increased your knowledge of your heritage and how you passed it onto your family. Thanks Sal. Mr. Roa
The company has been in limbo, since its last performance on December 12, 2019, because of the pandemic. It was scheduled to perform on March 21, 2021 at the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, IL. but it has been postponed until later this fall. Hopefully the pandemic will be over by then. Its website is http://www.mexfoldanco.org
The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago has played an extremely important role in who I am today. Being a first generation Mexican-American is not an easy experience to go through. You have the pressure of understanding the values of being an American while remaining true to your heritage and remembering where your family comes from. The company allowed me to do just that. Growing up, it helped me with my Spanish, it allowed me the opportunity to understand the cultures and traditions of various parts of Mexico and allowed me to grow as an individual by being on stage. I loved every minute of it! I’ve made life long friends and my confidence has gone through the roof. It led me to believe in myself enough to participate in various beauty pageants, join the varsity cheerleading team at my high school and at my university. I hope that others will have the chance to find themselves through MFDC. They are truly family. (Dancer for 13 years).
I joined MFDC at the age of six and departed at the age of 14. I remember looking forward to our performances and social gatherings we had after. The experience of being able to represent my culture to others was amazing in itself. Mr Ovalle and Mrs. Ovalle were both my instructors and made sure each volunteer mastered the folkloric dance. Mr Roa who was mostly the MC of performances explained in detail every state and its representations of costumes and meanings. The experience of being part of the group still has an impact in my life and I highly recommend attending one of there performances.

mexfolroa 01/13/2021
Thanks Michele. Your post will qualify MFDC to be put on the Chicago Top Rated list.
I am a former dancer for the MFDC, from 1987 to 1992, when I moved to Mexico City to become a professional dancer for "El Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México, Silvia Lozano". The discipline and high expectations of Maestro Ovalle make each volunteer an excellent folklorico dancer and a better human being. Such is the case that at the age of 10 years old I invited my daughter to be part of the history of The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago, until she went to college.

mexfolroa 01/13/2021
Thank you Maru.
I joined MFDC in 1985 when I was 15 and continued to dance for 15 years after that. The years I spent with the dance company created a lot of memories, like touring Mexico and performing during the World Cup opening ceremonies, and the friendships I developed. I appreciate my time with the company as it helped me in the development of my identity as a Mexican American by providing us the opportunity to learn about of our Mexican heritage through dance. The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago is a great place to learn and grow.

mexfolroa 01/13/2021
Thanks VicakaVitor. Sorry I do not recognize your acronym. Can you identify yourself?
For about 13 years or so, I was a part of this amazing company. I learned so much about my culture and Mexican history through the different dances we presented. We spent so much time together; it was really a second family. The amazing friendships will last a lifetime.

mexfolroa 01/13/2021
This was a memorable event for me because I did the announcement, on the United Center's PA system, for MFDC's dance presentation. I only recognize a few dancers because my memory has deserted me. Can anyone identify everyone?
MFDC has been a space of growth on both a professional and personal level for me. In my 10+ years of participation, I’ve had amazing experiences and opportunities.
But the best part is that dancing has been an exciting way to learn about Mexican culture and at the same time be the educator. In the spirit of education, my favorite experience has been forming part of the CHRP Stomping Grounds program. We shared the stage with incredible dance companies in various dance styles with the intention of sharing our rhythms with each other and everyone!
I truly hope MFDC will continue to provide all it does for generations to come.

MFDC helped me in all ways possible not just physically and mentally but also brought our roots and culture to alot of communities throughout our city and other states. I have been dancing for 30 years now and it's a honor to have been part of this group. I hope our Mexican culture doesn't fade as throughout the years I have seen less interest in the culture within our youth but MFDC makes sure to bring those dances and culture back to life where we enlighten the crowd with hooray and cheer and applause with the exquisite costuming and footwork!!
I have been a part of this group for the majority of my life, the culture, the bonds created behind the scenes. There’s so much beauty being a part of these shows to experience. Having scene other dance groups perform, it’s a pretty amazing feeling being a part of this company’s history. I highly recommend jumping on the opportunity to view the grup live.

I am a founding member for MFDC joined in 1982 at 7years old and I can honestly say it was the best thing that happened to me. I was fortunate to have joined this incredible dance company that not only taught me discipline, But all the details in reference to our wonderful culture needed to succeed as a dancer in the company. Thanks to being part of this MFDC I was able to travel and live the great experience of performing for important personalities such as presidents and Vice Presidents etc. grateful for being able to dance on some of the most important stages in US, Mexico and Ireland definitely made all of the hard work worth while. I developed a second family with my fellow dancers that to this day I hold dear to my heart. I have had so many memorable experiences but one that stands out now is Dancing in the 2009 Latin Grammys during Juan Gabriel’s act.
I am glad that I was able to be part of such an amazing Dance Company❤️
