Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Congregate Meals, Coronavirus Relief Food Banks, Food, Meals on Wheels, Nutrition

Mission: MMOW was founded as "neighbors helping neighbors" in rural communities. Although the area has been engulfed by suburban growth, MMOW continues to provide for seniors in under-served communities in northeast Tarrant and south Denton counties of North Central Texas. Home-delivered meals support frail or elderly individuals who are unable to cook or shop for themselves, but who strive to remain independent and in their own homes. The meals provide daily nutrition as well as the opportunity for social interaction with the volunteers. Senior center luncheons provide socialization and support groups that are essential for seniors and a strong support system for active seniors who live independently. For seniors who have followed their adult children to new communities, the luncheons provide the opportunity to develop friendships that replace the network of friends left behind. The luncheons also provide the opportunity for seniors who live with their adult children to participate autonomously in activities of their choosing. Metroport Meals On Wheels provides services to individuals in need regardless of age or financial circumstances. There are no waiting lists and no red tape. MMOW's programs nourish active seniors, the elderly, chronically ill and disabled with food for the body, and more importantly, care and compassion for the soul.

Target demographics: seniors and other individuals who can not cook or shop for themselves

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 1,400 seniors with lunch time meals, visits and activities.

Geographic areas served: NE Tarrant, southern Denton and Wise counties

Programs: home-delivered meals, nutritional supplements, pantry staples and fresh produce to home delivery participants. Our volunteers provide a friendly smile and daily contact ensuring peace of mind to both participant and family. We also provide lunches and activities for 9 area senior centers. Our goal is to help seniors and the infirm remain at home and independent as long as possible.

In 1992 I began driving for Metroport Meals on Wheels. At the time my Mother was ill and lived 400 miles away. My prayer was that if I took someone their lunch and made them laugh then maybe some one way out in west Texas would take Momma a hot lunch and tell her how pretty her flowers looked and ask her how her grandsons were doing. Amen. We are only asked to commit to delivering meals once a month. That is a commitment I can make and not get "burned out" on.

Several years ago, I decided to reduce my volunteer time commitment to local government entities and redirect that time to local charities Meals on Wheels in general has always been familiar to me so I began delivering meals to local seniors through Metroport Meals on Wheels (MMOW). It was very rewarding to meet and getting to know those I delivered to. It is more than just delivering a meal...it is a friend and welfare check. While I still deliver meals, I have directed more time (and treasure) to MMOW and am now a Board member assisting in growing our deliverables. The experience has been personally very rewarding for me and I encourage anyone looking for a place to get involved to consider MMOW.

MMOW is a great organization bringing not only food, but a daily visit to our clients. The smiles, hugs, and thanks from the clients we serve make it a very worthwhile volunteer experience. Not sure who gets the most joy from the meal deliveries--the happy clients or the volunteers with happy hearts knowing they just helped out a neighbor. Highly recommend MMOW for those in need of a daily meal, either for a short term or the long term. Also recommend as a volunteer experience, whether you sign up for a regular route or as a substitute driver. It is also an experience you can share with a friend or spouse, having one drive and the other get out of the car to deliver the meals makes it a fun shared experience.

I particularly enjoy hearing about the life experiences of the folks to whom I deliver meals on wheels. They have made so many interesting and valuable contributions and now we are able to thank them with the support of Metroport Meals On Wheels.

I've been with MMOW since the beginning on April 1, 1980, and I am happy to still be delivering meals to so many wonderful people. The long tenure of many of our volunteers speaks volumes about the dedication, passion and loyalty that we all feel for this organization, the elderly and others in need. Most of our volunteers have provided this loving service for many years either by driving, being board members and/or fundraising. The benefit of being fully involved like this in a charity is the deep feeling of community that develops between volunteers, staff, the recipients, donors and/or sponsors. It is this commraderie that keeps the heart beating and wheels turning at METROPORT MEALS ON WHEELS.

Several years ago I started out as a customer at Sadies the consignment store that benefits Metro Meals on Wheel. As I got to know the ladies that work with MMOW & Sadies I became a volunteer to work in the consignment store. These ladies on both sides of the program are wonderful dedicated people. Their goal is for the betterment of the organization. To raise funds to make sure every person that needs a meal gets one.
I love this organization & the people who are dedicated to make it the best it can be. A big thank you to the ladies of Sadies & MMOW.

For years I have seen this organization grow and provide the most caring and needed services to people in North Tarrant County. It is a model of well run---well managed non-profit service and desreves all our support. They also have the most awesome resale shop that helps pay for many of their services.

I have been associated with Metroport Meals on Wheels actively since my retirement in 2005 as a driver and now as a board member and a volunteer. I have found that MMOW is always looking for ways to help the people in our community not only from the meal standpoint but from a day to day needs standpoint. Be it meals, electric fans in the summer, food for a pet, transportation for personal care, the list goes on and on. The staff members at MMOW are truly dedicated people. The wages they earn are far below what could be made outside the nonprofit arena, I am sure, but the warmth of their heart at the end of the day is more gratifying than what money can bring. They are to be saluted, as well as the numerous volunteers that gie their time and energy to this wonderful organization.

Meals on Wheels is a wonderful organization. It is a way for me to help in the community and be both eyes and ears for those elderly that are unable to get out. We are able to see their needs, help in ways that are appropriate and bring some sunshine and friendship into the lives of many that may not have family close. It provides a healthy meal to the elderly, and a person to check in with them each day. I love this program and have been blessed to serve our Meals on Wheels area for 9 years.

Meals on Wheels is a wonderful organization that not only provides a healthy meal to the elderly. It is also a wonderful way for the elderly to have someone to check in on them on a daily basis and ensure that they are doing okay. The drivers are sometimes the only human contact that these elderly receive, so many of them look forward to their visit.
