Mission: Through exposure to written language (e.g., storybook reading) children develop an awareness of print, letter naming, and phonemic awareness. Additionally, through exposure to oral language, preschool children develop listening comprehension, vocabulary, and language facility. Reach Out and Read reaches children who are in their critical years of cognitive and language development. By reaching children and their parents, ROR delivers a full dose of early literacy support. Ten books are given out at pediatric visits in the child?s first five years. Books are new and carefully chosen to be developmentally and culturally appropriate ? starting with chewable board books for babies and moving up to more complex storybooks for preschoolers. ROR reinforces the parent?s role as the first and most important teacher, and gives parents the tools needed to help their children succeed.
Programs: To support the efforts of DC health care providers who promote early literacy of children ages six months to five years old and distribute books and literacy counseling to parents through the Reach Out and Read program.
