Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Since 1893, the Meriden Humane Society (MHS) has been a not-for-profit no-kill animal shelter and rescue facility in CT. Many of our animals are taken from high risk situations such as cruelty/hoarding investigations, abandoned strays and private residents who can no longer care for their animals. “We believe it is our moral responsibility to protect and improve the lives of abused, abandoned, and homeless cats and dogs, and to place them in loving, permanent homes. We work diligently to educate the public on the importance of pet sterilization, responsible pet ownership, disease control, as well as the Humane Treatment of Animals. The Meriden Humane Society is a Private, No Kill, non-profit Animal Shelter and Rescue Facility. We are not affiliated with any other Humane Society or rescue organization and receive no funding from state or local government entities. We are funded by generous people who believe "Life Matters".

I am a volunteer with a small rescue in new britain ct. Meriden human society takes in a lot of our kittens that were born outside as well as many cats left behind by homeowners who move. The shelter is always clean and the animals in their care get great care. They go above and beyond to provide each and every animal vet care. The staff is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. I feel they are one of the best shelters in ct

Applying to adopt was simple, especially in comparison to other applications we completed. The staff member who oversaw our application took plentiful time asking all the right questions to find a pair who was our perfect match. The adoption process was simple and everyone we communicated with was pleasant and supportive. We now have two beautiful, healthy kittens who have changed our lives for the better. They really are the perfect fit for our family and we honestly believe their adoption team nailed it when pairing us with them. We are so very grateful for the help of the MHS team for their guidance and support through our adoption. If you are looking for your next companion, MHS is the perfect choice.

I can’t say enough about MHS! We adopted our three kitties through them with the help of their amazing foster system. We first adopted litter mates Boo and Violet (brother and sister) back in 2014. After losing our beloved dog, Charli, in 2020, we adopted our third kitty, Maizie, in 2021. Maizie was rescued from being a stray, and with the help of her amazing foster mom, she learned that people are awesome and she’s now the biggest love bug ever! Actually, all three of our fur babies are big into love and cuddles from such a loving and safe start to their lives.

This is not only a place of solace for the animals that are surrendered here, it is it's own form of sanctuary for the people who come and dedicate their time to the animals. There is not one animal that goes without love and affection each day.

The community above all - is dedicated to making the lives of the animals of animals better both in the walls of the organization as well as once they are in their new homes. MHS staff and volunteers put the animals needs at the forefront of the decision process when it comes to finding their "furever" homes.

This shelter is run by a board, volunteers and a great foster home system that really truly cares about the animals. The volunteers will step up to do yard work if needed, come in on holidays, foster a sick baby or work an extra fundraiser. The shelter is clean, the animals are well cared for and the people are selfless and compassionate. I can’t say enough good things about this shelter.

I am a trapper in Meriden and rescue partner of the Meriden Humane Society. Over the years they have helped with countless cats, kittens, injured, sick kitties I have rescued from our community. This shelter is the best run shelter in the state I believe. Clean , organized. The staff and volunteers are amazing and put their heart and soul into their work. I am honored to work with such wonderful people that have the same passion as I do for saving the precious lives of voiceless animals in our community.

MHS is one of the best rescue organizations in CT. They are extremely hard working people for the animals in their care. They are a very compassionate group of people that I feel extremely blessed to have connected with over the last few years. I’m an independent rescuer and they have helped me save a lot of lives and find wonderful homes for many abandoned cats.
I’m honored to be one of their rescue partners and I am very grateful that they exist and for all they do for so many animals and humans alike.

As a rescuer in New Britain who rescues hundreds of kittens and cats per month, Meriden Humane Society has been a saving grace. Without hesitation, they always step up to help strays who are friendly, shy, scared, injured, pregnant and the list goes on. The volunteers at Meriden Humane Society love each and every cat there like it’s their own. They do their due diligence in finding the absolute best homes for their animals. I am forever grateful for them and am so incredibly lucky to have a shelter like them in our area.

horrible experience the director is so unprofessional...... her assistant is horrible also...... they stole my sister's dog from her tricked her into signing a document.... my sister cannot read or write and is special needs but is an excellent dog owner....... They told my sister they would take care of her dog until was better and her puppies and keep her updated . but after i looked at the documents they wrote in the bottom of the contract my sister signed over her dog.... My sister and I have been calling and they yell and hang up the phone.... My sister is so depressed and is worried about her dog.. today they called her and threatened her... they are so unprofessional and it is obvious they don't care about a pet having a good home this dog had puppies and all they see is dollar signs so of course they wanted the mother.... Be aware and anyone who has had a problem with these people plewase post.. Director's name is Marleana and her assistant is Kim both horrible.........
