Mission: To provide one-on-one mentoring programs for grade-school children in the inner city schools of west dallas and to provide after school activities that include taks instruction, sat preparation, enrichment activities and technology vocational training. The organization works in concert with the schools to enrich and enhance their existing in-school and after-school programs, realizing many of the children have additional educational needs.
Programs: Mentoring:mercy street's mentoring builds healthy, long-term relationships with the children in the west dallas public schools with the goal of raising leaders from within the community who will lead positve, permanent changes in their community. Mercy street's mentoring program is focused on instilling hope through encouraging, supportive relationships. During the year ending august 31, 2017, 248 mentors from the dallas area, provided systematic and regular mentoring support throughout the year. Several hundred other volunteers have assisted on a part time basis in the other programs of the ministry- sports programs, community wide events, bible studies, and our leadership institute.
sports:the sports program includes a spring little league baseball league, a spring softball league, a fall and spring soccer league, a fall clayton kershaw baseball camp and multiple summer football camps. Coaches work with athletes to develop skill and character. We had about 1600 children total involved in these programs in 2016-2017 with 220 coaches. Coaches spend an average of 5 hours each week coaching for an average of 10 weeks.
leadership development:the leadership institute trains high school and college aged students in leadership development through a summer internship program. There are 48 leaders in in training as well as 14 volunteers. They spend an average of 200 hours learning different leadership traits. They interact with area business leaders to learn business development. They also have the opportunity to learn different skills, specifically in our microbusinesses and elective classes.
mercy street supports other activities in support of our ministry to the members of the community, this includes the mercy street church which works in tandem with mercy street.
