Causes: Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Children & Youth
Mission: To find responsible african american men in their early to mid 20s to help spring kids free from the hardest generational cycles of poverty through long-term mentoring.
Programs: Mentoring - two african american mentors are being coached through college by meeting with their coach each week and being paid to mentor to high school students. Only 11% of first generation low income students finish college. All mentors in our program are on track to finish college. These mentors are working with seven at-risk african american students through weekly one-on-one meetings. These students also go on outings every other week with their mentors for job shadowing and fun activities. About 1/2 of at-risk youth will drop out without intervention. 6 of the 7 students in our program are on track to graduate high school or get their ged.
