Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Marine Science & Oceanography, Technology

Mission: Melimoyu ecosystem research institute, inc. (the "company") was formed to engage in charitable, scientific, and natural resource conservation endeavors focused on the region of aysen, chile, particularly in the portion known as melimoyu, and its surroundings (the "region"). Specifically, the company will work to preserve the ecology, environment, and culture of the region. The company will accomplish its goals through conducting research, developing and implementing educational programs, collaborating with, and providing guidance to, individuals and public and private organizations, and increasing awareness of the flora. Fauna, marine and terrestrial habitats, ecosystems, and culture, and the urgent need for the conservation of the extraordinary landscape of the region.

Programs: Blue whale acoustic monitoring project passive acoustic monitoring of blue whales in the gulf of corcovado there is increasing evidence that the gulf of corcovado is an important feeding area for large whales, especially blue and humpback whales. Understanding how whales move through the region provides critical information for the conservation of these species, and leads to key findings such as redirecting large ship traffic away from the whales' prime feeding areas. Passive acoustic monitoring of blue whales in the gulf of corcovado was meri's first scientific research project, and was made possible by collaboration among various chilean and foreign organizations.

fundacion centro de meri celine cousteau diving expedition in march 2013 celine cousteau, granddaughter of the famous submariner jacques cousteau visited meri. Her husband capkin van alphen and his son felix visited meri as well. Celine, together with cause-centric productions, the storytelling organization she leads, is dedicated to traveling the world producing and distributing multimedia content to support and communicate stories of grassroots organizations working on environmental and socio-cultural issues. With this visit, meri began underwater explorations in the bay of melimoyu. Capkin van alphen was in charge of the image shooting, acting as cameraman of cause-centric productions. The main object of her visit was to perform the first underwater expedition in melimoyu bay, documenting and recording the underwater marine life in the northern patagonia as a support of meri's blue whale project and other land conservation projects inside melimoyu nature reserve (darwin frog and guaitecas cypress projects). Additionally, celine visited the melimoyu community, where she shared some of her experiences around the world and the importance of scientific activities that help better to understand our environment and its effective conservation. The final product of this amazing visit was a short film made by cause-centric productions, called "exploring eden in patagonia: diving in" (http://causecentric. Org/blog/projects/causecentric-short-films/), which was a significant boost to meri's blue whale project, publicizing the organization overall and supporting fundraising campaigns.

gulf of maine research institute partnership the gulf of maine research institute(gmri) worked with melimoyu ecosystem research institute (meri) to develop strategies for work that will create positive impacts on research and conservation in the melimoyu bay region of patagonia.

melimoyu volcano seismic monitoring project since 2010, the national service of geology and mining (sernageomin) has made scientific observations on volcanoes seismology, geodesy, and geochemistry as part of the national network of chile volcano monitoring. In the aysen region, the study area extends from the southern region of los lagos (palena province) including the chaiten and michinmahuida volcanoes, to the hudson volcano located south of coyhaique. Thus, the melimoyu volcano is located squarely within the study area. The objectives of this national project are to: know the level of volcanic activity based on different methodologies: seismology, geodesy, and geochemistry; alert agencies (e. G. The national emergency office) when abnormal situations arise; predict eventual volcanic eruptions; protecting the integrity of the people, their animals, and infrastructure. Meri collaborated with sernageomin on the earthquake monitoring of melimoyu volcano, by supporting the installation of equipment which can both receive seismic signals sent from the volcano, and also test volcanic form 990-ez, part v, information regarding personal benefit contracts: the organization did not, during the year, receive any funds, directly, or indirectly, to pay premiums on a personal benefit contract.
