Mission: Medicine horse program enhances the mental health and life skills of youth, adults, families, and groups through therapautic interaction with horses.
Programs: Therapeutic riding programs for adolescents, adults and families, including the hope foal program, which is designed to address issues of self-esteem, depression, and suicidal ideation in teenage girls by matching these girls with premarin foals; the equus integration project partners with students at arapahoe high school, boulder high school, and manhattan middle school, where students learn about horses and work on interpersonal communication skills, cross-cultural communication and team building. The "just say whoa" program is designed for repeat juvenile offenders to address anger management, boundaries, trust and develop leadership skills. The "healing with horses" program helps children deal with issues of grief associated with a significant loss such as a parent, sibling or grandparent. The "equineability" program addresses the psychological, emotional and social aspects of individuals with development disabilities through horse activities.
Medicine Horse is a truly special place. I was struggling with depression and anxiety after a terrible accident. Our sessions in nature, with the horses and therapist helped me regain my internal balance and mental health. The lessons I learned carry with me daily and help me stay calm. I'm so grateful for the assistance they provide at Medicine Horse.
I've been volunteering with Medicine Horse Program for five years and also board my horse at the facility. It has always been an incredible sanctuary space, but over the past year, tremendous work has been done to renovate the facility itself, which has been wonderful to see.
In addition to group and individual therapy, MHP also offers numerous community events from meditation with horses to journaling to drumming circles. Everyone here is kind, welcoming, respectful, supportive, and compassionate. Even just volunteering here is a therapeutic experience. Highly recommended.
