As a research student at UCLA, I recently visited Liberia (March/April 2011) and was able to see first hand, the extensive and sustained relief work being carried out by Merlin. Merlin has been in Liberia since 1997 and has stayed through the harrowing civil war helping save thousands of lives.
Liberia still has one of the worst health indicators in the world and very high maternal & infant mortality rates. Merlin is focussed on providing basic health services across the counties and also manages and runs hospitals providing free health care.
In my interactions with the Merlin field staff, I found them to very professional, focussed and committed in their work. They also have a strong leadership team and very closely works with the MoH (Ministry of Health) in building a sustainable health capacity and infrastructure.
