One special lady who delivered meals to seniors was Eleanor Benke. Eleanor was a volunteer for many years and she was a senior citizen herself. She described her volunteer work as "Helping those old people." Eleanor is proof all ages can volunteer to this wonderful organization. RIP dear lady. Eleanor died at the age of 97.
This is one of the best 'person to person' organizations I've had the pleasure to help support. Without this organization, many seniors would go hungry and in America that would be a disgrace.
I deliver meals weekly, and this is one of the most satisfying parts of my week. I don't talk at length with the clients, but I feel that I know them, and I feel valued by them. Everyone I deliver meals to seems like a wonderful person. Helping make their lives a little easier, a little less isolated, and a little healthier feels like the best thing I can do with my time.
I helped deliver meals while in school. This program saves lives; provides the elderly with daily support; and is a wonderful way to learn about folks, to hear their stories, and share a little of their lives with them. I will be forever grateful for my time with Meals!
My husband suffered with Dementia and attended Grace Place Center during his last year before passing. I cannot praise the center enough for the outstanding care and compassion they gave him . He looked forward to going 3 days a week, and as his only caregiver, it gave me an opportunity to catch my breath and rest. All the staff was so kind , and I never worried about leaving him in their care. Grace Place was a blessing at a time when we needed one the most.
I wish that I was able to support this charity more. We had a very good experience with Meals on Wheels when my Mother still lived at home (alone). I was very impressed with the quality and quantity of the food they delivered. What an amazing program, and so much time and love given by staff and volunteers.
It can be so hard to find a way to serve your community when you have young kids. MOW has been such a positive experience for me and my kids. They love knocking on doors and delivering meals. I love being able to serve together as a family. We have met so many kind people through this service. What a blessing for all involved!
I love Meals on Wheels! Not only have I had the pleasure of serving as a volunteer through my company, my dad is now a client. In fact, their service has saved his life! His assigned driver takes the time to speak with him and gives him the socialization, as well as the nutrition, he needs.
This is a gratifying experience to be a part of Meals- on- Wheels. My friend and I started delivering meals about 3 years ago. This small job to us is a part of doing God's work.We look forward to greeting the elderly and the disable every Monday!
I live alone. I use a power chair for mobility because of multiple disabilities which affect my entire body. The hot meals delivered by Meals are very important to me, both for my physical and mental health. The door step visit by a volunteer certainly brightens my day. There's nothing like a smiling volunteer that gives me a lift.
Thank you for funders, staff and volunteers for your dedication to helping people like me.
I am a volunteer delivery driver who works on my days off as a substitute for routes that need extra help. Everyone on the Meals on Wheels San Antonio team is super to work with, from the volunteer coordinators to the front desk to the kitchen staff to the drivers. All on the team feel united in their mission to deliver quality meals to their clients who really need and appreciate the service. And that is where the payoff comes as a volunteer, meeting the clients and seeing up close how much they appreciate the help. And it only takes a couple of hours on any day you are able to help!
I found Grace Place, a part of the Meals on Wheels program in San Antonio, as an affordable day care facility for my mother with dementia. All of the people there have been wonderful. It is a great option so that I can go to work and my mom gets a great day of care! I give thanks everyday for this program! She looks forward to her days there because everyone is so kind. Thank you Grace Place.
I've been volunteering with Meals on Wheels for over ten years and have really benefitted from the simple act of service towards others. I have made many friends along the way and know how much a warm meal and a smile brings to the elderly in our community. May God continue to bless this program!
I have no experience with MOW. I believe my friends who have volunteered. I am 83 years olf, strong, and healthy, and very thankful. I give $40 a month to MOW with fhll confidence in their competence and honesty. I am counting on them to bring me meals when I become no longer able to drive, shop, or cook. God bless all of them. Love, Bobbie Sena
I have volunteered with Meals on Wheels San Antonio for 2 years. They make it a fun and easy experience to give back to my community!
The MOW team was very friendly and organized. It is a very exciting and proud moment to help others in need. To bring such happiness and a smile to their face was priceless and such a great feeling. I look forward to more opportunities in the future.
This was the second Thanksgiving that my husband and I delivered meals for MOW here in SATX. I can be a little fussy and sometimes critical of organizations when I feel like resources are being under utilized or squandered. Not the case with MOW. This operation is a well oiled machine and you just need to follow the directions given to you. It is so lovely to have an opportunity to bring food to seniors who might otherwise go hungry on Thanksgiving of all days. If you have time to volunteer, do it! If you have 5 extra dollars in your pocket, donate it! This is a most worthy organization!
Our Thanksgiving Day delivery of meals was our first experience in volunteering with Meals on Wheels. We were impressed by the organization and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers working the event. Traffic was being directed effectively and everyone we encountered had a smile on their face and was very positive.
Best of all was our interaction with clients on the Eastside where we delivered meals. We had great conversations with them. All of them appeared to be in their eighties and were really grateful for the food that we delivered.
This experience caused us to reflect on how fortunate we were. We are grateful for this experience and intend to do it every year.
I have been a Meals on Wheels volunteer for about a year and its a great experience for me--i'm a retired 78 year old man. This was my first Thanksgiving Day experience; and what an experience it was! I couldn't believe how well organized the whole process was. I only had four addresses to deliver, but by the time it was over, i found myself wishing I had a few more! The recipients were so grateful! There were hugs, and even a few tears, as I delivered their meals. I encourage anyone with a little spare time to get involved with Meals on Wheels. I look forward to my delivery days each week, and now, I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving 2016!!
This year I finally decided to put a few hours aside from my Thanksgiving Day to deliver Meals On Wheels. It was so well organized at the pickup sites and clear direction on what procedures are to be followed. The whole experience was so wonderful and I was blessed to have a friend battling cancer to ride with me. We both felt so blessed to be part of this event..hope to help next year!
Delivering Thanksgiving dinner for your organization was the most rewarding experience. The seniors to whom I brought meals were lovely and so happy to receive all of the extra goodies that came along with the meal. Your volunteers at the pick up center were very organized and efficient
I would be happy to deliver for you anytime you need the help
My daughter and I have annually participated in the meal on Wheels Thanksgiving event since she was 6 yrs old! She asks every year to help out bc she loves to see these home puns elders smile and chat with us every time we meet them! It's very well organized and always seems to be pulled out without a hitch every year! Thank you for being a family tradition for my family for such a long time and for being a great organization!
It was an Awesome experiment everything is organized I didn't have no problem finding the place I had to deliver to. The people are awesome they are elderly and greet you very nicely. A great way to start your Thanksgiving Day.
A great way for our family to spend Thanksgiving. This was the most well organized volunteer event I have participated in, and was great for our younger children (6 and 8.)
It was the best part of my Thanksgiving Day! As I approached the line to get my meals to deliver I was overcome with emotion. Seeing all the volunteers and all the cars! It was such a heartfelt experience. Then each home owner was loving and kind. I got a lot of hugs that day. It made the day!
I had to do volunteer work as part of my degree plan at UIW. I could not have picked a better organization to do this with. Meal on Wheels was so organized with their Thanksgiving deliveries.
My husband and I truly enjoyed the experience on this special day. The time we got to spend together delivering meals to others, before we had to meet up with our own family and all the ruckus, was so meaningful. "We" look forward to do this as a tradition for years to come.
Thank you for letting us be a part of this event.
This was a great way for my husband and me to give back on Thanksgiving. I participate in Meals on Wheels during my lunch break once a month, and I thought it would be great to bring my husband on the great feeling that giving back provides. And, all the recipients are so grateful. The gratitude they show helps keep this crazy world in perspective.
Thanksgiving 2015! My kids are 7 and 5 years old. It was the first time I brought them along to delivery meals with me. It was a great experience! The pick up lines at the Meals On Wheels office on Babcock and Loop 410 moved quickly and our deliveries were close together in the North East of San Antonio. The kids enjoyed meeting seniors and asking them about Thanksgiving and I enjoyed sharing with my kids the importance of helping people in need. Delivering meals is always a humbling and fulfilling experience! I thank MOW for all they do feeding seniors in San Antonio.
Thanksgiving 2015 - This was my first time volunteering. Being new to SA, I wanted to give back since I would not be spending time with my family. It was one of the best decisions! The entire Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers were very organized and friendly. The directions and expectations were very clear. I give them many kudos. I also enjoyed seeing the smiles on the senior citizen's faces upon arrival. The conversations and laughs shared with them was also great! If I'm here in SA for Thanksgiving 2016 I will definitely be volunteering again.
I initially got on board with this program through my employer, AETNA. We alternate friday lunches to go and deliver meals and it is a great chance to interact with our community. The Thanksgiving day program was so smoothly ran that traffic was minimal and i was really greatful for the extreme efficiency. To top it all off the best reward was the big smile of everyone opening their door for the hot meal. Awesome way to show my son how to give back to our community.
My husband, our children and myself began volunteering for Meals on Wheels two years ago. We spent the last two Winter Holiday breaks delivering to seniors all over the SA area. We could not be more pleased with the way the staff, both Volunteer Services and Kitchen staff work to make sure every trip is a success. They call the day before to confirm your participation and are super organized. I would highly recommend that anyone with daily or seasonal free time give that time to the homebound seniors in our area. This is a super worthy cause!
We began delivering meals over ten years ago after my husband's father died and we found extra time on our hands. We have made so many friendships with our recipients and sadly, some of our friends have died. It has been a blessing and an honor to help these friends in their most vulnerable stage of life. Last year was the first time we have helped on Thanksgiving Day and we can say it was our best Thanksgiving in many years. We have no family close by so it was a great way to spend the morning! We'll do it again!
I've volunteered with Meals on Wheels for the last few Thanksgivings and I've got to say this was such a worthwhile event. I take my family with me to help with loading the trucks and it is great.
After delivering meals for 5 years, it's hard to decide who gets more out of it - the person receiving the meal or me. I love having the interaction with the seniors on my route. Great to know that Christian Senior Services is such a great steward of the treasure they receive. More than 90% going to the cause!
What a wonderful organization to volunteer for! I volunteered for 2 years delivering meals and had to stop but I definitely plan on volunteering again!
