Mission: The World Peace Prayer Society was founded in Japan by poet and philosopher Masahisa Goi in 1955 as a way to bring peace to all people. Membership in the Society is free, and members on all continents work together to carry the message and prayer "May Peace Prevail on Earth" to their communities through the Peace Pole Project, the World Peace Prayer Ceremony, the Peace Message Project, Youth for Peace, and the Peace Pals program for children. There are more than 200,000 Peace Poles in nearly every country of the world, and the magnificent World Peace Prayer Ceremony, raising the flag of every nation, has been performed worldwide. The annual World Peace Festival brings together thousands of people to celebrate and pray for peace, both in person at the World Peace Sanctuary in Amenia, New York, and live on the Internet. The Society, which has its international headquarters at the World Peace Sanctuary, is an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information.
