I have been involved with this foundation since it’s inception. Started by parents who lost their only child to cancer, it is an amazing story of how Vicki and Peter Brown channeled their grief into improving the lives of countless children with cancer by advocating for psychosocial support for families on the Hill, establishing the first ever psychosocial standards of care for cancer patients, providing child life therapists to hospitals and through the Mattie Miracle Cart which is laden with treats for hospitalized families and helps brighten their day!It is an honor to be associated with the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation and on behalf of the staff, families and children they serve at my hospital, I want to say a big THANK YOU to the Browns and MMCF!!!Aziza Shad, MD
For a sick child in the hospital, their minds are occupied with when their next scan or poke is going to be, and perhaps weighing more heavily, is when they will get to play next. As the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation Certified Child Life Specialist at Sinai Hospital, my role is comprised of two important aspects: normalizing the hospital experience for children and ensuring they are coping well with their treatment. As I provide support to children with cancer and blood disorders I carry the mission of MCCF with me: "It's not just about the medicine." When a 3-year-old patient is admitted for treatment, I make it my goal to help her play as much as possible. When an eight-year-old patient needs an NG tube to get valuable calories and nutrition, I am there with her to remind her she can accomplish this difficult task and help her cope with the procedure. When a family is rushed to the hospital with no time to pack necessities, I am there with the Mattie Miracle Family Snack Cart to provide comfort with candy, snacks, and toiletries. My day fluctuates between playing and painting, preparing and providing coping skills. Mattie Miracle reminds me that the psychosocial needs of children are just as, if not more, important than the medical care they receive to ensure they grow up healthy and happy.

Adina, we are honored to be working with you! You are the perfect representative of Mattie Miracle at the Hospital, as you embody our mission with each and every patient and family you support. Thank you for choosing the child life professional and our Mattie Miracle position. Together we are making the Mattie Miracles possible!
The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation, initiated and led by parents of Mattie Brown, a child who died of cancer 10 years ago, is an amazing and highly effective organization. MMCF is unique in its focus on psychosocial care in pediatric cancer. The Browns have created a network of leaders in pediatric psychosocial oncology and collaborated to complete systematic reviews that support 15 aspects of psychosocial care. These reviews resulted in the development of Standards of Psychosocial Care in Childhood Cancer. These Standards are critically important and now poised for implementation, which MMCF continues to support. It is a great pleasure to work with MMCF on this critically important work.

Thank you Anne for your incredible message of support. We will always be grateful to you and your powerful research on medical traumatic stress. Thank you for answering my email in 2010, for chairing the first ever childhood cancer Psychosocial Symposium on Capitol Hill, and for being a member of the core team for the development and implementation of evidence based Standards of Care. We feel honored to be able to work with you over all these years.
MattieMiracle is an organization that will forever be near to my heart, as the founders were not only the sponsors of my clinical CCLS role at Medstar Georgetown Pediatrics, but also are fantastic advocates for Child life services and Psychosocial Care throughout the entire DMV/greater Baltimore area. Working for Mattie Miracle has been an experience that left me feeling supported and knowing that the science and psychology of my role was valued and understood. Peter and Vicki trusted my expertise and equipped me to create activities and environments that would add meaningful experiences to children’s lives both in a community setting and within the clinical realms. I will gladly continue to work with and volunteer for MattieMiracle as long as they keep growing their presence in this very important field.

Morganne, Thank you for your beautiful message. We have been honored to work with you in both the hospital and community settings. I am grateful that you chose the child life profession and are passionate about helping children and families all over the world. Let's stay connected. Vicki
Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation serves the children who are hospitalized at The Herman and Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore, MD. The families and children know Mattie Miracle as 'the big orange cart with treats'! The children and families may choose from an array sweet, salty and sour snacks and many types of drinks. The parents are grateful for the stock of toiletries to make them more comfortable.
However, there is so much more to The Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation. The foundation researched and published the "Evidence Based Psychosocial Standards of Care", as the baseline requirements that should be available for hospitalized children nation-wide. These standards will change the care of children for years to come.

Thank you Susan. It is an honor to work with you and to support the families at Children Hospital at Sinai. Mattie Miracle appreciates your commitment to our psychosocial mission.
Mattie Miracle provides much needed psychosocial support for pediatric patients in the hospital setting by funding child life specialists - a role that is often understaffed but a very important position at children's hospitals. Child life specialists help reduce the stress and anxiety that pediatric patients face on a daily basis with stressful procedures and new diagnoses. Without Mattie Miracle, many kids would go without this service. Mattie Miracle understands that treatment for childhood illness is about more than just physical health - it is about emotional and mental health.

Thank you Jess for your lovely message of support. We value you and your commitment to the child life profession.
I am in awe of the work of the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation. And it is so multi-dimensional. Their work with standards for psychosocial care alone has been monumental--drawing together many of our country's best providers around creating and advocating for approval of a single agreed-upon set of standards. Then, add the direct patient impact from Child Life Specialists and the Mattie Miracle Family Snack Carts. I can attest, as someone who works in a hospital (Sinai) whose patients benefit, to seeing the smiles and hearing the stories of the young patients and family members numbering the thousands now who have been directly touched thanks to their work. They are an amazing organization who has worked so hard to make a better future for the children affected by their work. Thank you, Mattie Miracle!

Thank you Geannie for your beautiful message. Mattie Miracle is proud to support children with cancer and their families at Children's Hospital at Sinai!
Mattie Miracle Childhood Cancer Foundation has added a dimension to the treatment of children with Cancer that has long been needed. Along with best medical care, children, their families, from day of diagnosis need Psychosocial Support in many areas that match the Medical treatment. These areas are paramount to every patient, those that reach survivorship, those children who die from their disease. Mattie Miracle does this with food carts at two area hospitals containing fun treats for the whole family plus toiletry items for families members. Mattie Miracle is responsible for two Child Life Specialists whose positions bring special fun to a room or a play area. Mattie’s parents Vicki & Peter Brown want to make a difference for kids in treatment to make sure in all ways their Psychosocial needs are met as equally as their medical needs. Children with Cancer, their parents, face daily an array of emotions, fears, uncertainty, how best to help their child. Finding the best Specialists for this area of care, armed with solutions to provide assistance with all Psychosocial needs will help the child & family members know their child’s needs are being met in every aspect of care. Their mission is, IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE MEDICINE, and it isn’t!

We couldn't have said it better! Mattie Miracle thanks you!!!
I have volunteered with and donated to Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation and have been impressed with the dedication and professionalism of the founders and organization. They have assembled experts from across the country to draft psychosocial standards of care for children with cancer--very few grieving parents would be able to accomplish what they have. Every dime they receive goes to their core mission of serving families whose children have cancer. They are smart, compassionate, tireless, and dedicated.--Dawnee G.

Thank you Dawnee for your steadfast financial support and hours of service to Mattie Miracle. You and Greg help us make the Mattie Miracles possible.
Mattie Miracle goes above and beyond to help children with cancer and their families - the founders have turned their tragedy (losing their precious only son to cancer at the age of 7) into hope for others. From small acts of kindness such as stocking snack carts with treats and necessities (coffee pods, toothbrushes) at local pediatric wards and sorting and donating post Halloween candy to developing NATIONAL Standards of Care for the psychosocial component of childhood cancer care - this non-profit has had an impact at every level. Mattie Miracle is changing the way children with cancer receive needed mental health services. I am proud and honored to play a small part in this important mission.

Thank you Ann for your message of support and for the incredible work you have done for Mattie Miracle since 2009. You help us keep Mattie's memory alive and you make the Mattie Miracles possible!
Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation gives so much back to children with cancer and their families. I have watched the organization grow over the last many years and am very proud to be a volunteer helping with their events and their fundraising activities. The founders work tirelessly so that other families have an easier journey while dealing with horrendous diagnoses of pediatric cancer. This organization is all about helping others, setting and implementing standards of care nationwide. Fighting cancer is NOT all about the medicine. There is so much more and MMCF addresses these aspects.
