Causes: Environment, Garden Clubs

Mission: The ohio state university extension (osue) master gardener volunteer (mgv) program is an educational program designed to meet the consumer horticulture needs of ohio citizens. Its purpose is to train volunteers and utilize their expertise to teach people more about plants and pests, their culture, and their importance to the environment and to our quality of life. Mgvs provide technical assistance to their county extension office in order that consumer horticulture activities and programs can be more effectively and efficiently delivered to ohio's gardening public.

Programs: Educational seminars open to the public and master gardeners from other counties featuring qualified speakers on a variety of current gardening issues and topics. 200 attended the spring seminar and 198 attended the fall conference which was hosted by this organization.

master gardeners educate and train the public on gardening. This covers all age groups. Taught a weekly class for approx. 128 4th graders at a city of cleveland school introducing them to gardening and the importance of growing fresh vegetables. In addition, at the ben franklin site, master gardeners maintain vegetable/herb/perennial demonstration gardens for training of the public. Food grown in vegetable garden is donated to the needy. Master gardeners act as community garden mentors in 50 community gardens all across the county assisting in training and maintaining the gardens. Mgs maintain a plant a row garden where produce is donated to food bank, typically around 2000 lbs.

educational lecture and field trips. Master gardeners made 14 presentations at cuyahoga county libraries in 2017 and approximately 77 talks at area garden clubs with 1484 attending. In addition, master gardeners sponsor various forms of training open to the public throughout the year including providing continual education for the members where general public is also welcome.
