Causes: Arts & Culture, Humanities

Mission: Purpose is to create and support educational experiences in the humanities that inspire all marylanders to embrace lifelong learning, exchange ideas openly, and enrich their communities. To do this it develops and manages such humanities based programs as marylandhistory day, one maryland one book, chautauqua, and museum on main street, and it also provides grants to non-profit organizations.

Programs: Grants - provided grants to non-profit organizations in maryland to conduct humanities-based programs with special emphasis on programs that featured civic dialogue and engagement. In the most recent year the program funded 23 grants with total audiences of 81,551.

history - provided public programs throughout maryland to increase awareness of local and national historical events and improve research and analytical skills. Programs included maryland history day serving over 27,952 students and 965 teachers, and chautauqua, museum on main street and veterans standing together discussions, serving 33,117 in total.

inter-disciplinary - provided public programs throughout maryland in various other humanities disciplines, including the weekly radio program, humanities connection, that reached audiences throughout the state, totaling 960,000.

literature provided public programs thoughout maryland to encourage reading and literacy, including one maryland one book that served 7,991 participants. Other programs included letters about literature, literature and medecine, veterans book group, literacy walking tours, in total serving 2,619, and various book festivals with audiences of 122,175.
