Mission: Marvell repertory theatre is new york's only professional theatre - and one of only a handful in the entire nation - devoted exclusively to producing new and enduring works in rotating repertory. We are drawn to plays and musicals of integrity, power, and beauty. We thrill to see actors and audiences stretch their creative muscles as they grapple with great works in vibrant counterpoint. As new york's flagship repertory company, we strive to embody an international standard of excellence by creating first-rate professional theatre experiences that refresh the spirit, stimulate the mind, and quicken the heart.
Programs: In 2011, marvell repertory theatre produced its first repertory project consisting of four plays organized around the theme of women in revolt: blood wedding by federico garcia lorca, in a new york premiere translation by ted hughes; the dybbuk by s. Ansky, translated by joseph c. Landis; nora, an adaptation of ibsen's a doll's house by ingmar bergman; and in the shadow of the glen by j. M. Synge. The plays represent four completely different cultures: blood wedding is set in a rural village in spain; the dybbuk comes from folk tales s. Ansky recorded as part of his ethnographical expeditions into russian jewish villages; nora reflects scandinavian culture, with the original playwright coming from norway and the adapter from sweden; and in the shadow of the glen is an irish play. Despite their varied geographic and cultural sources, the plays reflect a current of the time, as all were written at the turn of the 20th century, and all feature women protagonists rebelling against the socially accepted traditions of their time and culture. The four plays were performed over six weeks at the abingdon theatre arts complex in new york city, providing audiences the opportunity to see all four plays in a single week.

I loved working for Marvell! I acted in two of of their productions, and those experiences were definitely two of the most inspiring, creative and joyous of my career. Lenny Leibowitz is a WONDERFUL director--he creates such a supportive, energized rehearsal environment, and treats every member of the company with such respect and kindness! And the designers and volunteers were all awesome and so committed. The best!
I love the productions. Saw ANTIGONE this spring and thought the performances were so strong. Made a small gift and received a prompt acknowledgement. The newsletter this winter was great. Look forward to seeing more productions in the future.
