Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Environmental Education

Mission: Protect/improve ocean life and human health by advancing understanding of ocean pollution, educating the public and advocating for policies to preserve the ocean/human environment for this and future generations.

Programs: Research - the institute's scientific research documents toxic chemical pollution and its impacts on marine life and human health. Our group continued to conduct seals as sentinels research along the nw atlantic and expanded our climate change and microplastics monitoring program in the gulf of maine. Plans are underway for a national study of chemical exposure and cancer risk among us fire fighters.

outreach and advocacy - harness citizen and government support for programs to stop toxic ocean pollution. Meri scientists presented research findings via media and to policymakers in support of legislative initiatives to reduce harmful exposures.

education - promote public awareness and understanding of the impacts of toxic environmental chemicals with an emphasis on positive citizen action and policy solutions. This was accomplished via the director's lectures and targeted meetings around the country, meri's 2014 environmental lecture series, the meri website and newsletter, and environmental health sciences internships.
