Mission: Our mission is to be a great catholic university dedicated to providing students with excellent teaching and learning in the franciscan and liberal arts tradition. To provide an education distinguished in its ability to prepare transformative leaders for service to the world. We welcome students of all faiths who seek an educational experience framed within the context of our franciscan values of dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship. Our understanding of these values is informed by reflection on the life of jesus christ and prayer. The institution grew out of the dedication and vision of sister theresa hackelmeier and the sisters of st. Francis, oldenburg, who established a school in oldenburg, indiana, in 1851. The college was founded in oldenburg in 1936 and moved to indianapolis in 1937.
Programs: Marian university served 3,182 students as measured fall, 2016. This was comprised of 2,164 undergraduate, 396 graduate and 622 medical students. The university offered 60 different majors with distribution of declared majors as follows: nursing 37%, business 19%, education 7%, liberals arts (20 different majors) 18%, math/science 11%, exercise science 6%, other/undecided/exploratory 2%. Other demographic information includes: male 41% and female 59%, minority 30%, average sat score of incoming freshman 1,047. 78% of students are from indiana. Included in the above demographics are traditional full-time undergraduates, part-time undergraduates, non-traditional accelerated adult program (primarily evenings and weekends), accelerated on-line nursing and graduate students.
college of osteopathic medicine - in fall 2013, marian university welcomed its inaugural class of 162 students in the college of osteopathic medicine. This is the only college of osteopathic medicine in the state of indiana and the 2nd medical school (along with indiana university medical school). The university received full accreditation when it graduated its first class of 131 students in spring 2017. 129 students were placed in residencies in 64 cities across 27 states. Total enrollment fall, 2016 was 622 students.
