Mission: Marian House was founded in 1982 by the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame in response to a community need. Marian House is a holistic, healing community for women and their children who are in need of housing and support services. We provide a safe, sober, and loving environment that challenges women to respect and love themselves, confront emotional and socioeconomic issues, and transition to stable and independent lives.
Target demographics: Women who are homeless and suffering from the negative effects of addiction, trauma, mental illness, and incarceration to find their independence and become contributing members of the community.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 143 women and 102 children.
Geographic areas served: Better Waverly, Baltimore City
Programs: Housing, education, life skills, job readiness, counseling services and other necessary support services for women and their families.
As a board member, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative impact Marian House has on women and children in Baltimore City. This organization is a lifeline, especially for women re-entering society after incarceration, offering them a safe and supportive community. I am continually moved by the dedication of the CEO and staff, who work tirelessly to provide not only housing and essential services but also a genuine sense of hope and empowerment that helps each woman embrace a new beginning.
I visited Marian House in May 2016 and received a tour of the organization, led by Katie Alston, Executive Director. It is an outstanding organization, professional and compassionate. This is an organization that knows what is doing and is making a difference.
