Many of my friends - and friends of friends - living in New York City and Long Island, especially in Howard Beach and the Rockaways, experienced dreadful personal loss and destruction to their homes due to the severity and magnitude of Superstorm Sandy.

The nature and scope of this natural disaster made it very difficult for even the best, experienced and legendary 'first responders' of NYC to meet the unique rescue and recovery needs of those most adversely affected in the immediate aftermath of the storm.

However, Margert Community Corporation, the community-based housing agency serving southeast Queens (as well as the 5 Boros & Long Island), regained operational capacity almost immediately and has been responding to and directly assisting those households least able to help themselves ever since.

Through personal experience, second-hand sources, and anecdotal evidence, I've learned that their capacity and commitment to assisting the most vulnerable households in these Sandy-afflicted neighborhoods has been nothing less than extraordinary.

New York City is certainly blessed to have such a remarkable network of strong, community-based nonprofits serving the housing needs of all its residents, and never has it been more clearly demonstrated than by the successful interventions of Margert Community Corporation.

Keep up the good work!
