Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals, Protection of Endangered Species

Mission: In 2021, Mara Elephant Project (MEP) celebrated a decade of protecting elephants and their habitats across the Greater Mara Ecosystem (GME). We are fighting a war of space in the GME. The GME, an extension of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, is one of Kenya’s most important wildlife areas and tourism assets. The Mara-Serengeti ecosystem is one of the last major wildlife refuges on Earth. Most famous for its annual migration of nearly two million wildebeest and zebra, the ecosystem is also home to an estimated 40% of Africa’s large mammal species yet covers only 0.1% of the continent’s land surface. In the Kenya portion of the ecosystem, people and wildlife peacefully co-existed when space for both did not overlap; however, as the human footprint has grown, the rangeland demand for livestock and farming has increased, pushing wild animals into smaller areas. While poaching emerged as the number one threat to elephants in 2012, when 96 elephants were killed for their ivory, now, the expansion of the human footprint resulting in increased conflict and habitat loss is the crisis the Mara faces. To combat the crisis, MEP focuses on increasing four key pillars of protection: elephants, habitats, communities and connectivity. Our approach is to Monitor, Evaluate & Protect, or the “MEP” Method. MEP deploys innovative techniques and technologies to monitor our four pillars of protection. MEP builds bespoke technologies that evaluate conservation data and produce actionable outputs to influence policy, landscape planning and deployment of resources. MEP deploys Kenyan rangers and researchers to protect our four pillars. MEP’s vision is to see a stable elephant population co-existing peacefully with people across the Greater Mara Ecosystem. Our organization values collaboration, diversity, transparency and investment in local resources.

Getting to meet the rangers and seeing their commitment to the Mara was so impactful and inspiring! Ensuring that the elephants in the Mara are around for many more generations is so important and MEP is doing great work to make this happen!

I was extremely fortunate to have visited the Maasai Mara and the Mara Elephant Project in June of 2019. What a delight!
Because I am the President and Co-founder of an elephant organization, I can testify to the outstanding work they do as a conservation organization.
The three prong approach they use to deal with the crises facing elephants; monitor, evaluate, and protect, has resulted in the highest level of care for elephants within the Greater Mara Ecosystem and the communities in which they serve. Their rangers have made them one of the most relevant conservation organizations in the Mara. Ongoing challenges of poaching, human elephant conflict, and habitat loss are some of the issues that rangers contend with daily. Working to ensure there is co-existence between wildlife and communities and to conserve habitats that are integral for the livelihoods of the Kenyan people is MEP's mission.
We are proud to continue to support their excellent work and thank them for all they do to make the world a better place. If you are considering going to Africa, I would highly suggest a visit to MEP. :)
*Note - the elephant in the picture has been monitored with a collar to ensure his safety. MEP uses cutting edge tools to monitor elephants, rangers and asset movements in real time for threats to wildlife, communities and habitat.

I’ve spent a whole morning with the on-field team learning about MEP’s conservation efforts in Mara North Conservancy this September. What an outstanding job they do in saveguarding the future of elephants and their relationship with humans.
