Causes: Homeless & Housing, Temporary Housing
Mission: Malta House's mission is to provide a nurturing home environment, support services, and independent living skills to pregnant and parenting mothers of all faiths and their children.
Results: Malta House's most significant organizational accomplishments are reflected in the number of expectant and new mothers (and their newborns) we serve annually. Since opening our doors in 1998, we have helped 362 mothers and 373 babies while providing well over 8,612 nights of shelter.
Target demographics: Malta House serves single, homeless pregnant, and parenting women and their children. Over 70% of our residents are Black or African American, and approximately 8% are Hispanic or Latino. Most of our mothers are young adults, with the average age of our mothers being 23.
Geographic areas served: Malta House serves all of Connecticut, with most of our clients coming from the towns of Fairfield County. We also take in mothers out of state if the need is great.
Programs: Malta House is the only transitional living program in Connecticut where a mom can stay with her baby for long-term support and a "hand-up" as she journeys to independence and hope. Malta House's three core programs include: 1. Residential Program: Mothers in our Residential Program at Malta House receive a full continuum of support centered on nine core competencies: education, employment, parenting, childcare, finance, mental health, spirituality, nutrition, and volunteerism. During their stay at Malta House, mothers also receive guidance designed to foster a positive self-image for themselves and their children. Personal finance and budgeting advice is offered to promote self-sufficiency as our young families assimilate back into the community. In addition, each resident agrees to participate in an individualized educational component that may include GED preparation or certificate programs at a local community college. We also offer tutoring to support the rigors of each class. 2. Partnering Success Program: As our mothers transition from on-site residencies to independent living, our Partnering Success Program provides ongoing follow-up assistance such as counseling, childcare, housing subsidies, and transportation services. It often included support for their children's educational needs, rental assistance, free childcare, household essentials, or basic needs proving our belief that "once a Malta House mom, always a Malta House mom." 3. Community Outreach Program (i.e., "Baby Pantry”): Malta House receives many generous donations of baby equipment, clothing, diapers, and food — so much so that it is now known as a resource for these necessities in the Greater Norwalk area. We feel fortunate to share these basic supplies with former residents and other low-income families in need who are living in our community. Our programs are dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness among pregnant women and equipping residents with the resources to build sustainable futures for themselves and their children.
