Mission: We promote a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the rich cultural heritage that exists within our communities, we bring together culturally diverse art forms and their respective audiences, thereby promoting and increasing multicultural awareness. Our programs feature performing artists who are dedicated teachers and knowledgeable spokespersons of the cultures they represent. We offer instruction in traditional ethnic forms of dance as well as Arts-In-Education programs to schools throughout NYC metropolitan region.
Programs: Lotus music & dance is a cultural and educational institution dedicated to the teaching, performance and preservation of the dance and music traditions of all world cultures. The activities by our master artists foster artistic development, as well as cultural and social exchange. Our intention is to celebrate and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse people and the dance and music traditions of the world. In 2014-2015, lotus served over 26,654 people. About 3,673 were students who attended classes and workshops at lotus as well as residencies taught by lotus instructors in the tri-state area schools. Lotus produced performances and events which attracted a total of 8,054 people. Lotus artists participated in 22 events that were presented by other organizations. These workshops and performances reached a combined audience of approximately 9,426 people. Lotus also visited fifteen schools, reaching approximately 5,320 school children. Our audiences represent virtually every ethnic community in new york as well as dance aficionados and scholars of asian, african, hispanic, balkan and native american cultures. Major lotus events in 2014-2015 included lotus produced performances such as the shoton festival: a global gathering with tibetan, nepali, polynesian, kathak and flamenco dances; the world in the city a comparison of two indonesian dance styles: balinese and sumatran funded by the new york state council on the arts; fall open house with west african, middle eastern, peruvian, polynesian, south indian and flamenco dance. The thirteenth annual drums along the hudson: a native american festival and multicultual celebration, co-sponsored with the nyc parks dept. Was held on june 14th at inwood hill park with over 35 native dancers in full regalia who danced to the resounding host drums of heyna second sons and silver cloud. Also featured were international drum and dance groups on the main stage including dancers and drummers from omyn taiko and takajum bharata natyam dancers, kasibahagua taino cultural society, the ny tibetan service center childrens dance group, cholsum tibetan dancers, gorshey kuyiduk, the tibetan institute of performing arts dancers and singers, kinding sindaw filipino tribal dancers, and george faisonss universal dance experience with lotus dancers performing erasing boundaries. Over 100 performing artists participated in this years event. Our environmental tent hosted ten participating organizations and our world market tent another ten craft and food vendors adding to the festivities. Our drums 2015 honorees were his holiness the 14th dalai lama, tenzin gyatso and tichina arnold, actress and philanthropist, founder of the we win foundation. We also celebrated his holinesss 80th birthday with many of the groups dedicating their performances in his honor. The event attracted over 8,500 participants as well as outreached to an additional children and school teachers in the public schools. Lotus had ten programs appear on public access channel 56, qptvs fade to black, reaching over 1 million viewers. Lotus strives to be truly global in outlook and programming and has been of special service to under-represented groups in a way unmatched by other cultural organizations. Lotus productions have given exposure to rare and exceptional artists, bolstered cultural preservation and reinforced pride in world music and dance traditions.
