Without the LAPD Reserve Foundation, there would not be a LAPD Reserves Corp. The Foundation is our voice.

They help promote the Reserves contributions to The Department and The City. The Foundation fights for
Reserves. The Foundation helps get the Reserves the training and equipment they need and want.

The Foundation is every Reserve Officer best friend. Sometimes they don't get all the credit they deserve
but they are a rock-solid group. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help. Bottom line, Reserves are the Foundation top priority. It's been that way for years and it won't ever change.

The LAPRF has been absolutely wonderful supporting Reserve Police Officers who volunteer their time and efforts making Los Angeles safer. The LAPRF helps with critical training costs, equipment, and other resources that would otherwise be too expensive for many reserve officers to afford.

So grateful to the Foundation, for all the training, support, programs, and help to our families. If not for LAPRF, would feel very solitary.
Looking forward to the Memorial event and Twice a Citizen (I like to listen to Tim on KFI on the way home).
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

On behalf of my Co-President Karla Ahmanson and our Board of Directors, we report the following current or recent initiatives. We are honored to serve those who serve, our LAPD Reserve Corps. They go Above and Beyond in so many ways.

In-Service Training

LAPRF promotes current training, education and instruction for LAPD Reserve Officers to accommodate their professional schedules. LAPRF’s funding for the live fire simulation training program is a good example of life-saving skills. This is supplemental training not otherwise provided by the City of Los Angeles.
We also reimburse officers the fee (up to the early-bird discounted rate) to attend the Annual Reserve Peace Officers Conference (APPOC), which will be held this year in the Los Angeles area by the California Reserve Peace Officers Association (CRPOA). This conference provides our reserve officers an opportunity to fulfill the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)’s required two-year Continuing Professional Training (CPT).

Equipment

Funding requests, including reimbursement, for authorized equipment that is not otherwise provided by the City/LAPD, or in the case of financial hardship. One of the most successful examples in this category was the reimbursement of the “BDU” utility wash and wear uniforms, which were authorized by the Department during the COVID pandemic. The original proposal, written by LAPRF Board Director Mel Kennedy, said: “Without the ability to dry clean their uniform in a reliable fashion during this crisis, reserve officers would increase their exposure potential and that of their fellow employees and the public. This is precisely the circumstances in which our Foundation can fulfill its purpose in support of our reserve officers.”
This past year, the Foundation has implemented two equipment funding projects. 1) The purchase and distribution of wound care packs: rapid gauze that stops severe arterial bleeding that saves valuable time in a field emergency. 2) The reimbursement of critical “Red Dot” Sighting equipment for approximately 25 officers to date who have completed the Department’s PISTOL MOUNTED OPTICS (RED DOT) TRANSITION COURSE as a reserve police officer. The equipment provides an extra tool to keep our communities safe in life-threatening circumstances.
For those recruits that have served in the United States Military, LAPRF will provide a grant that covers equipment cost needed during Academy training.
LAPRF can provide funds for equipment in specialized units such as the Police Rifle Cadre, Air Support, Mounted and Motor Units. This includes financial support towards the creation of reserve task forces and other details to address specific crime and quality of life issues in the community. We have always supported our reserve officers who have given so much over the years to the LAPD’s partnership with the Sunshine Kids, the Special Olympics, Children's’ Hospital L.A., and Operation School Bell.

Annual LAPD Reserve Officer of the Year and “Twice A Citizen” Awards

The men and women of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps selflessly serve their communities, sacrificing time with their families, leisure time, and other opportunities. Some have made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. LAPRF hosts an awards dinner that acknowledges LAPD Reserve Corps members who have been selected by their division/area and bureaus for outstanding contributions, bringing awareness to their achievements, culminating with a Department Reserve Police Officer of the Year. Length of service pins are handed out. This event also honors Community Leaders who have demonstrated a willingness to give back. In 2023, Debbie Allen and Norman Nixon, and Uri and Myna Herscher were honored. In 2022, Wendy Garen and Joe Mantegna were honored. We also periodically present the Andrea Friedman Award to those who have gone “Above and Beyond” in leadership and support of the Corps; In 2023, retired Reserve Police Officers David Bush and Eric Rose received this honor.

New Reserve Exceptional Service Ribbon

At the Gala, Reserve Officer of the Year Awards are presented, for Division/Area, Bureau, and Department. The Awards include the Reserve Exceptional Service ribbon, recently approved by the LAPD Uniform Committee, as part of an LAPRF initiative.

Scholarships

“As a Los Angeles Reserve Police Officer, you and your family have done a lot for our City. You have given your time — your tremendous commitment and dedication — to protect and serve your community.”
The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation has announced the 2024 LAPRF Emeritus Scholarship. As a current LAPD Reserve Officer, you and your children (and grandchildren) are eligible to apply for a scholarship. $2,500 will be awarded to the selected applicant. The application deadline for Fall 2024 is May 31, 2024.
Additionally, we continue to offer the $2,000 vocational scholarship donated by Jeff and Heather Nocket and Todd and Cheryl Moore, to LAPD reserve officers’ children or grandchildren through the LAPRF. Includes funding provided by Joe Wong.

Legal Defense Plan Reimbursement
For the sixth year in a row, the Foundation has reimbursed a portion of the Basic Legal Defense Plan offered to LAPD reserve officers by the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL). We thank the League Directors and Staff and we are grateful for this partnership, which brings extra peace of mind to our officers and their families.

Recruitment

The LAPD Reserve Corps has been an official part of the LAPD since 1947. A big part of the Foundation Mission has been to promote awareness of the program, and to continually inspire candidates to join the Corps, especially during these difficult recruiting times.
LAPRF actively recruits Reserve Officer candidates through a variety of methods including but not limited to billboards, television PSA’s, radio and numerous social media campaigns. Much of this is low cost or donated. We partner with the LAPD, Reserve Officers themselves, and community leaders such as Dr. Shaquille O’Neal (who has served as a Los Angeles Port Police Reserve Officer), to tell their stories, to inspire others to apply. LAPRF hosts tables and booths at key events throughout Los Angeles (such as L.A. Fleet Week and the L.A. Auto Show) and arranges various speaking and community engagements. LAPRF actively seeks out opportunities to reach military veterans, as their skill set and "willingness to serve" orientation can make them qualified and interested Reserve candidates. LAPRF’s recruitment efforts are indispensable in ensuring a strong LAPD reserve program.

The Reserve Rotator Newsletter and Social Media

The LAPRF publishes The Reserve Rotator newsletter twice per year, with Vice President Mark Dietch’s 911 Media. This version of the newsletter has been published since 2008, and printed copies are mailed to active Reserve Officers, Command Staff, and others working on or within the LAPD reserve program. A PDF is also uploaded to the LAPRF website. Each issue, published in Summer and Winter, highlights the service, accomplishments, and other activities of LAPD Reserve Officers, and gives officers information on the reserve program Department-wide, with updates from LAPD and LAPRF management. Perhaps most important, the newsletter has become an archive, to document the history of the LAPD Reserve Corps – happening today and in the past. Finally, the newsletter helps to provide a channel of advocacy, not politically, but from a position of telling the story of our Reserve Officers. The Summer issues feature the annual Gala. The Winter 2023 issue included a cover story deep-dive into the State of the Corps, analyzing and reporting on an LAPD Reserve Corps Survey, commissioned by the Foundation; 36-questions, with over 100 responses. One respondent said: “Thank you for this survey. This is the first organized inquiry I can recall in a long time, and it reinforces how the LAPRF has been an advocate for the LAPD Reserve Corps.”
The LAPRF also manages a social media presence. The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation page was established on Facebook in November 2011.

Reserve Memorial Garden

On June 26, 2021, the new Reserve Memorial Garden was dedicated at the LAPD Academy at Elysian Park, established and funded by the LAPRF, in partnership with the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club (LAPRAAC). The beautiful garden is centered by the Memorial Granite. Below the engraved LAPD badge on the stone, the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps is listed, along with historical incarnations, the Los Angeles Police Auxiliary, Los Angeles Home Guard and the Los Angeles Rangers. “In memory of our fallen partners who, in the line of duty, made the ultimate sacrifice: Norbert John Huseman, Emergency Policeman, EOW December 31, 1945; George Booker Mogle, Reserve Policeman, EOW August 7, 1946; [and} Stuart S. Taira, Reserve Police Officer, EOW March 1, 1983.” Next to the Granite is the new plaque for Officer Taira, which his surviving brothers were there to see placed. This garden, a labor of love for so many, will stand as a monument for all who have served within this rich history of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Hardship and Bereavement

Over the years, some LAPD Reserve Officers and their families have needed financial or other assistance, often due to the consequences of their service to the City of Los Angeles. The LAPRF stands ready, as always, to be there for them.

It has been my honor to serve as Co-President, along with Karla Ahmanson, as we support those who protect and serve. On behalf of our Board of Directors, here is a summary of the current funding initiatives of the LAPRF.

• Twice A Citizen/Reserve Officer of the Year Gala
LAPRF sponsors the annual dinner honoring the Reserve Police Officers the Year and members of the Reserve Corps. The gala also serves as a fundraising event, recognizing “Twice A Citizen” community leaders.

• Training and Education
LAPRF provides funds for training opportunities that are otherwise not funded by the City or the Department, for example, partial reimbursements for the Annual Reserve Peace Officer Convention by CRPOA and PORAC training. During the pandemic most of this training has been on hold. Currently, the next ARPOC is scheduled in August 2021.

• Recruitment
LAPRF researches and provides media opportunities to increase both interest in, ad awareness of, the LAPD reserve program. LAPRF creates and manages the production of PSA radio spots and billboard type advertising. The Foundation identifies and coordinates opportunities to recruit at in person events, and creates and executes social media campaigns for recruitment. We coordinate with Department staff and reserve mentors at orientation events.

• Newsletter and Social Media Sites
LAPRF sponsors The Rotator newsletter, maintains LAPD Reserve social media accounts and laprf.org

• Equipment
The most recent example of this has been the BDU initiative, providing up to a reimbursement for the utility uniform the Department has authorized during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this writing, 68 officers have received the grant.

LAPRF will review requests to help subsidize reserve officers with financial hardships, the costs of their equipment not otherwise provided by the Department

The Foundation reimburses recently discharged military veterans for equipment reserve recruit officers must acquire for Academy training.

We will consider other specific requests on a case by case basis

• Special Task Forces
The LAPRF considers limited financial assistance towards the creation of specialized Reserve Units authorized by the Department.

• LAPRF College Scholarships
For several years now, the LAPRF has awarded annual college scholarships for LAPD reserve officers or their children.

• Legal Defense Plan Reimbursement
For several years now, the LAPRF has partially reimbursed LAPD reserve officers for the Legal Defense Plan offered through the Los Angeles Police Protective League. In 2020, 53 reserve officers received the subsidy.

Reserve Police Officers have the same rigorous training as other LAPD officers in order to serve our community. We also take on the same risks as our full time colleagues. But, we are unpaid volunteers. The Los Angeles Police Foundation dedicates its energy and resources to assist Reserve Police Officers by supporting training so that we can keep up perishable skills, providing safety equipment, and offsetting costs of the equipment that we use on duty. Beyond the basic equipment provided by LAPD, we need to purchase additional equipment and uniforms at our own cost.

I recently had a red dot optic mounted on my firearm. In order to qualify to use this on-duty, I had to purchase an optic-ready firearm and a red dot optic using my own funds, and then pass the red dot qualification course. The cost of this purchase and other equipment that I use as a patrol officer adds up. I very much appreciate the Foundation's support in partially reimbursing the cost of my duty firearm with its red dot optic.

Additionally, the Foundation recognizes and supports us with its annual Twice a Citizen event. This organization surely is one of the great nonprofits with its focus on recruiting more community volunteers and supporting us as we serve others.

Upon retiring in 2013, as a homicide detective supervisor, I remained on the Department as level -1 reservist and continue to serve today. I appreciate all the assistance and support that the Reserve Foundation has provided us. The Reserve Foundation is invaluable to the Department and community. I've had the pleasure of working with many of our reservists over the yeas and have seen first hand their commitment to service. There is also a host of other expenses required for being an active Reserve Police Officer that the Reserve Foundation then reimburses. This is greatly appreciated, as each Reserve needs to bear many additional costs "out of pocket". My sincere gratitude to the Reserve Foundation.

After 44 years I retired from a successful career in the business side of movie entertainment and wanted to volunteer for an organization that could make a difference in my community.
I had always respected law enforcement, and volunteered at a local LAPD station. I was thrilled to be assigned to the Detective division, having grown up watching every detective show. In short order the lead detective for my table began to give me cases to call victims and witnesses, investigate, gather evidence, and prepare the package for a detective to present to the District Attorney. I loved the challenge of the investigation, identification of the suspect, and being a part of justice for the victim. I knew I could do so much more for my division and for the victim if I became a sworn officer.

At age 67, I applied to the Los Angeles Police Academy to become a Reserve Officer. After an extensive vetting process, I was accepted into the program that includes the ability to complete 3 separate levels of Reserve Officer. Our class of 10 established comradery and helped each other throughout the 3 month instruction. We graduated as sworn Los Angeles Reserve Police Officers, level III on 1/4/19, one of the proudest days in my life.

The very next business day my partner on the detective auto table took me to court and showed me how to navigate presenting cases to District Attorneys and City Attorneys, custodies, arrests, interviews, testifying in court. Since, I've worked the auto, theft, burglary tables, and am now on the robbery table. I carry a full caseload and am 100% responsible for all aspects of each of my cases from beginning to final disposition. Identifying suspects, having a DA file charges, and obtaining justice for victims in court is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment, and this is truly my second career chapter.

My story was made possible by the untiring work and support of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation, headed by President Karla Ahmanson. Very few U.S. cities have this wonderful program that offers opportunities that wouldn't be possible elsewhere. LAPD Reserve Officers are welcomed and appreciated by the full time officers with whom we partner, a direct result of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation's supportive endeavors. My niche was investigations, however some of my classmates continued additional training to complete Reserve Police Officer levels II and I, graduated with the same training and abilities as a full time LAPD recruit, and now partner with full time officers on patrol.

Whatever job we hold in the police force, the LAPD Reserve Police Officers proudly wear their badges and volunteer to "Protect and Serve" the community in a meaningful way, working beside our career police officer partners.

The L.A. Police reserve foundation is an invaluable resource to reserve officers who are volunteer police officers. The Foundation provides training and uniform equipment for reserves like myself, which would otherwise be cost prohibitive. The Foundation truly serves the beneficiaries it was established to serve, the Reserve Officers (who are all volunteers) of the LAPD, by providing educational stipends for state-mandated training, assistance with the purchase of much-needed safety equipment, as well as responds to any calls for "Reserve Officer Needs Assistance". The Reserve Officers of the LAPD are the unsung heroes of the City of LA, providing additional front line and behind the line services and support to all communities within the City, at no cost to the taxpayers, donating their time and services. Knowing that the Foundation is there to meet the unmet needs of Reserve Officers provides those Reserve Officers with peace of mind, thus allowing them to carry forth their duties without unnecessary concerns. In these time of calling for additional training of officers, the Foundation provides reimbursement for these trainings so that these officers are current on their mandated training and are then better able to serve the community. The Foundation runs a tight, transparent organization with little resources, and prioritizes direct services to the Reserve Officers.

Receiving much needed resources to help Reserve Police Officers fulfill a very critical role in public safety is so incredibly meaningful. These resources equip volunteer Police Officers who answer the call for service with life saving equipment and resources. It takes a special person these days to serve as a Police Officer let alone those who volunteer to fulfill that same responsibility. These are trying times with many competing yet worthy causes. I have purchased many uniforms over the last 40 years, but this was special in that the Foundation paid for it otherwise I would have had to continue using my regular uniforms. This was a great help in that I could wash it between shifts instead of getting my regular uniform cleaned. That saved me a lot of expense. Thank you.

I am so grateful for the Police Reserve foundation. I am a reserve after having been a full time sworn officer for 30 years. I actually started my law enforcement career in 1980 has a reserve for Culver City and then joined LAPD, full time. The Police Reserve Foundation has always ensured that reserves were afforded opportunities, including training, equipment and uniforms, career and volunteer opportunities and more. They have ensured the professionalism of the corps and has helped create an environment where the reserve corps thrives and is eager to work and support the organization. The Foundation really pays attention to the needs of the reserves, who volunteer their time and in some extremely precarious and dangerous situations. They are always ahead of the game, i.e. providing reimbursement for BDU uniforms as soon as they were approved and even reimbursing insurance and myriad other items the reserve corps needs. Thank you for everything including the communication, support, coordination, and supplies. Proud to still be part of the LAPD Reserve Corps. Jeri Weinstein

Supporting the foundation helps to support long time volunteer Officers that supplement the regular Officer Cadre - saving the City of Los Angeles thousands of dollars every year!

Consider making a donation to the Police Reserve Foundation a part of your yearly giving!

The LAPD Reserve Foundation has exceeded my expectations in terms of how far they will go to assist the community and residents. . This foundation has time and time again showed and voiced its support for not only LAPD officers and their families, but also for members of the community. Working with fellow LAPD officials and the city of Los Angeles, this foundation has helped to keep police officers properly equipped, trained, and prepared year after year, no matter the situation. The reserve foundation has also made an everlasting impact on members of the community as they assist with certain major events such as the Special Olympics and spending time with the Sunshine kids. Their mission to help the residents and community truly goes above and beyond. I can personally attest to the generosity of the LAPD Reserve Foundation as they awarded me, as well as several other college students, with a $2500 scholarship to assist us with paying for our college tuition. The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation (LAPRF) is a non-profit organization that promotes excellence in the LAPD and helps to improve public safety and partnerships in our community.

One of the continuing trends in government is the use of public-private partnerships (PPP). The LAPD Reserve program and the work done by the LAPRF is perhaps the best example in Los Angeles a true partnership between the public and private sector.

The LAPRF provides critical resources and vital support to LAPD Reserve Police Officers. From essential equipment and state-of-the-art technology to specialized training and innovative programs that would otherwise be unfunded, the funding the LAPRF provides directly improves public safety, impacts reserve officer’s readiness, and enhances our quality of life in the community.

The LAPRF serves as a vehicle for tax-exempt gifts and grants from individuals, businesses, and philanthropies. The foundation works closely with the Police Chief to develop a strategic program agenda. It takes the support of everyone to allow LAPD Reserve Officers to continue to be guardians of our community.

Please join me in supporting the LAPD Reserve Foundation.

Reserve Officers donate their time and energies to the City of Los Angeles and it’s residents. They are not compensated and often bear the financial burden of serving themselves.
The LAPRF is a fantastic organization dedicated to helping Reserve Officers cover the unexpected costs of serving. Specialized training and equipment can cost thousands of dollars and the Foundation is there to help when no one else can.
Most recently, and perhaps most importantly, the Foundation covered part of the cost for a Reserve Officers to obtain critical legal services through the Legal Defense Plan offered by the Police Protective League. Without this coverage Reserve Officers would have to pay for legal defense out of their own pockets when serving the City turns to suffering the consequences.
If you’re considering a donation to the Foundation I can assure you that the money is thoughtfully controlled and well spent. I know because I’m a Reserve Officer and a donor and I’ve seen the good work the Foundadtion has done. I have donated for many years as part of the payroll deduction plan at my work and I also purchase through Amazon Smile with the Foundation listed as my charity.
Please, join the team today.

In the year of 2016, I decided to join the LAPD RESERVE Unit. I had just completed my A.A degree and by being only 19 years old, I was not able to apply as a full time officer. In the meantime, I still was motivated to be involved with LAPD, but also contribute towards my community. Luckily, I was informed about LAPD Reserves. I must say this is one of my proudest moments. Graduating the Reserve academy and being able to volunteer within my community is inspiring. I am able to volunteer in multiple ways and meet many amazing people who share the passion on being twice a citizen in their communities. As a full-time college student and worker, I tend to be busy, but I promised myself to always give back time in the Reserve unit. As a level three reserve, I have been able to receive many support from other Reserve officers and the foundation's representatives. I was honored this year to receive a scholarship through the LAPD Reserve Foundation. I attended the Reserve Gala and was granted such award. I will forever be grateful. The Reserve Corp helps to augment the strength of LAPD’s field force, helps to decrease crime, and to provide concerned citizens the opportunity to become directly involved in the service of their community. The Reserve Corp depends on LAPRF to make certain that financial hardship does not get in the way of these goals.

The Reserve Corp allows citizens of Los Angeles to build closer community relations with law enforcement. The reserve officers build rapport within their communities. They have the unique opportunity to be in contact with their fellow "neighbors" both in their day jobs and as peace officers. This gives the citizens of their communities a chance to see these special individuals in different ways. One, as hardworking business employees or even business owners and two, people who want to protect and serve.

Without the hard work of the LAPRF, the reserve officers could not contribute as they do.

I am the Treasurer of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation. I’ve had this position for the last 33 years. I am also an LAPD Reserve Officer, for the last 35 years, and counting. Since I write the checks, I have seen firsthand, the many Reserve Officers we have helped over the years with training grants, equipment grants and financial hardship grants. I must believe in the Foundation and the LAPD Reserve Corps or I wouldn’t still be involved with both. Late last year I was getting rid of my car. Rather than use it as a trade-in on a newer one, or sell it and use the proceeds to help buy a newer one, I donated it to a Charity Auction company. They sold the car and the net proceeds came directly to the Foundation. Yes, I believe in the Foundation and The LAPD Reserve Corps. The entire Board of Directors and its’ Officers are unpaid and donate their time to the Foundation because they care about it.

The one constant is the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation. Started in December 1983 I have watched it grow and its mission expand beyond its' original purpose, all for the betterment of the Reserve Corps. Many Reserve Officers have benefitted from the support provided by the Foundation, whether it is for training, equipment or financial hardship. Reserve Officers selflessly protect and serve the people of Los Angeles, without pay; due to their desire to give, back to the community they live or work in. The support provided by the Foundation is a small way to repay them for what they give to us all.

The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation (LAPRF) helps support the LAPD Reserve Police Officers the true “Twice-A-Citizen”. In 2014, Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps saved the City of Los Angeles $2,160,971. Over a 12-month period, the Reserve Officers volunteered 46,426 hours and performed a variety of law enforcement related duties including working Patrol and Traffic Units, assisting Detectives with their investigations, as well as in Administrative support functions. The Reserve Corps could not support the citizens of Los Angeles without the LAPD Police Reserve Foundation.
With the help and funding efforts of the LAPRF which include reimbursements for training conference fees, safety equipment and firearms purchases not covered by the Department, as well as support for community events such as Reserve Recruitment, Special Olympics, and Sunshine Kids. They help to provide additional equipment and funds for training that can be essential to officer safety - bullet-proof assault vests to reserve officer members of the Police Rifle Cadre, state-of-the-art flight helmets for reserve pilot/ observers, and equipment for mounted units. Much of this equipment can be prohibitively expensive for any one individual, especially in these challenging economic times, and the funding by the Foundation has been, in this very real sense, a lifeline. The Foundation has also provided travel assistance for reserves representing the LAPD at national and international events. And we have provided bereavement and emergency assistance to reserves and their families.
I am a proud board member of the LAPRF and LAPD Reserve Police Officer who is in eternal gratitude to the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation for all they do.

The Los Angeles Police Reserve Corp is an indispensable program for the Los Angeles Police Department. The overall benefits to our City are phenomenal. The value of services donated to the City are in the millions, making the Reserve Corp a very valuable resource. Reserve officers augment the strength of the LAPD regular officers by putting more police officers on the streets of Los Angeles, in addition to those already deployed. LAPRF's recruitment initiative is indispensable in keeping the Reserve Corp strong. Reserve officers are very dedicated individuals who do not always receive the recognition they deserve. LAPRF hosts an awards and appreciation dinner to acknowledge the significance of these men and women, who serve voluntarily for the betterment of our communities. I joined LAPD reserves in 1992, working in LAPD's field jail. While I attended Univ of Southern Cal, I was approached by a Professional Engineer who needed someone to provide mainframe programming and to help him with field support for his automotive collision reconstruction discipline. That was my first taste of trying to methodically undo a mess of mangled metal to find out what happened. Sometimes his services are hired years after the crash, when all that's left to work with are photographs, memories, and a report.

Fast forward to 2003. I transferred to West Traffic Division (WTD), which is responsible, among other duties, to investigate traffic collisions 24/7/365 in a 124-square mile portion of Los Angeles. After WTD provided the 40 hours of POST approved collision investigation (CI) training needed to qualify as a collision investigator, I began investigating West Bureau traffic collisions.

Through the generous assistance of the Reserve Foundation, I continued advancing in the CI field. The Reserve Foundation paid the tuition for me to attend "speed from crush", "auto vs. pedestrian", "auto vs. bicycle", and other advanced CI training, totaling 303 hours. That's over 7 times the minimum training hours required!

Even though I "contribute" time away from my full-time job and "contribute" lodging and meal expenses, the Foundation's continuing generous assistance in covering conference fees allows me to attend the Crash Safety Institute's 5-day collision conference every year.

This conference attracts international attendees and guest speakers, perhaps because the first day features live crash testing. Some of the tests even have live volunteers on-board, donning accelerometers and other instruments strapped to their bodies. Test results from Day 1's live crash testing are analyzed the next 3 days.

I've completed 2500+ collision investigations so far at WTD, ranging from simple hit-and-runs to fatalities. I am one of just six collision reconstructionists at WTD. I am flattered to be asked by officers to opine or review a report they've written.

The Foundation's continuing support is crucial in allowing me to attend reconstruction courses and crash conferences. This pays itself forward; it allows me to stay current, to enhance competency, to offer credible opinions and advice to others and also to conduct higher-level investigations myself.

The ultimate benefactors are the citizens and visitors of Los Angeles, which all reserves have committed to and have sworn to protect and to serve.

I am a longtime board member of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation and proudly work along with other caring board members to assist the devoted men and women who serve our community as reserve police officers. These selfless people work shoulder to shoulder with paid, full-time police officers to protect and serve the citizens of Los Angeles. They do this, at times risking their lives, for essentially no pay. We celebrate them every year as “Twice a Citizen” — an individual who goes beyond their civic duty, for the good of us all.

When I tell friends and family about our purpose, they are surprised, impressed and thankful for the Reserve Corps. I am grateful also. And for that reason, I donate time, money and resources through the Reserve Foundation to help reserve officers do their jobs more safely with additional training and the purchase of equipment, and to help relieve some of the burden from them and their families.

Please look into the good work of the LAPD Reserve Program, and I hope you decide to make a donation to this very worthy cause.

The Los Angeles Police Reseve Foundation is a unique and valuable resource that is a great source for supporting those that support our city and the LAPD. Many of our reserves have spent countless hours serving on the mean streets of LA but also setting up and carrying out various programs that have been of great benefit to the citizens. From specialized training to becoming certified police instructors and taking part in crime suppression units and even joining motor officers, our reserves do it all and at little or no reimbursement for their services. Recently after serving over 3 decades as an officer, I personally ran into perfect storm of medical and financial issues. Over the last decade as community policing has become more important, advocates of reform have increasingly looked toward reserve programs as part of reform efforts. The Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps. is one of the finest in the country. Part of the reason is the financial support of the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation. Recruitment, training courses, training expenses, hardship assistance, equipment purchases and morale events are just some of what LAPRF does to help support the Reserve Corps.

I had the extraordinary experience of meeting a Los Angeles Police Reserve Officer. This person works full time for a bank and has a family, yet he volunteers his time to keep the streets of Los Angeles safe. What was even more astonishing, was finding out that a reserve police officer has EXACTLY the same training and EXACTLY the same requirements as a full time police officer. How incredible that someone volunteers to do this job? Because they are primarily citizens, reserve officers are effective spokespersons in the neighborhoods for the support of law enforcement. Their presence within LAPD provides the regular officers with an insight into all segments of the city's population. An important component in today's law enforcement environment. When I asked how I could help this program, where so many men and women selflessly dedicate themselves to this responsibility, (well, join up was the first response!), I was directed to this wonderful foundation. Wow, another amazing group of people! The pride all of the officers and foundation directors take in their invaluable contributions to the safety of the citizens of our community is certainly justifiable. Their selfless dedication to duty epitomizes the concept of community based policing. On a daily basis they live up to their motto: :To be a Reserve is to be Twice a Citizen"!!!

I was very surprised to learn that, at any given time, that the LAPD Officer who comes to your aid may be a Reserve Officer, and you are unlikely to know -- so indistinguishable is their professionalism. And this has been going on since 1947. And they are not doing it for the money - they are doing it because it is in their heart, to protect and to serve our community.

I cannot imagine a better cause to support. These men and women go "above and beyond" for the City of Los Angeles. The least we can do, in my opinion, is to support and honor them.

I was a LAPD Reserve for 20 years from 1989 to 2009. I enjoyed helping the residents Los Angeles, good or bad. Would I do it all over again, heck yes.

Henry, Why a one-star review? We are assuming this is a mistake?

I am so impressed with the Los Angeles Police Reserve Corps. and the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation that assists them. Keeping the streets of Los Angeles safer and supporting more community policing is a noble endeavor, very much worth providing financial assistance to. Helping Officers maintain their training, providing essential equipment and above all, recognizing these men and women who put their lives on the line to help the citizens of this city, at no cost to the tax payer---is remarkable indeed. I urge all of you to join me in supporting this tremendous organization.

As reserve officers we are donating a lot of our personal time to the department. I appreciate the help and support the LAPD Reserve Foundation gives us.

LAPD has over 600 reserve officers that have gone through extensive trainng and now devote thousands of volunteer hours to help protect and serve our City. The Police Reserve Foundation raises funds from local businesses and local residences to buy needed items for the reserves to help protect themselves from harms way and get the tools needed to fight crime. Unfortunately the City does not have all the funds needed to provide the valuable necessities. Your support is always appreciative.

As a commercial business banker, specializing in the nonprofit area with over 150 nonprofit and foundation clients including several multi-million dollar clients, and over 30 years in commercial banking, I can say without question the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation (LAPRF) is one of my favorites. Their mission to assist the LAPD Reserve Corps is selfless and something to be admired. The entire Board and all the Officers of the LAPRF are unpaid volunteers who do an amazing job and should serve as an example to other nonprofit organizations. I admire what they and the entire LAPD Reserve Corps do and they certainly live up to their motto of being Twice a Citizen.

After joining the LAPD Reserve Corps in 1996 I learned about the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation.
Their original intention was to sponsor a dinner each year to recognize the contribution of the Reserve Corps as a group and as individuals to the City of Los Angeles. The LAPRF Board has grown to become much, much more.
Their on going support has made the difference in many Reserves lives during their time at LAPD. Contributing to Reserve Police Officers Legislative matters in Sacramento and Financial Assistance, to Reserve Officers in time of need. The LAPRF also contributes to officer's in specialized fields so they may have the same equipment as full time officers.
Grants to support to officers while in the Academy and supporting the extended training of officers by awarding scholarship funds to pay for tuition fees for added education mandated by the State of California, Police Officers Standards & Training.
The LAPRF supports other non-profits that Reserve Members are involved with each year such as the "Sunshine Kids program", "Tip-A-Cop", "Police Unity Bike Tour" and the "National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial".
Also many of the Board members come from the community at large as well directly from the ranks of the Reserve Corps. The input of these members makes a stronger organization overall.
The LAPRF has taken on many more tasks and responsibilities than was ever thought of in the beginning. Thus making the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation a full service entity.

The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation helps LAPD Reserve Officers (like myself) cover the cost of training, supplies and other essentials needed for the duties we perform as sworn members of the LAPD. We do this work as volunteers, and the assistance of the LA Police Reserve Foundation ensure we have the equipment and training we need to be successful. Thank you, LAPRF!

When I joined the LAPD Reserve Corps in 1984, I became acquainted with the Foundation. Over the years, the faces have changed and the roles have expanded, but they are still dedicated to the advocacy, support and recognition of the individual Reserve Officers who volunteer their time and risk their lives in service to the City of Los Angeles. "They cover our six!".

Over the years, the foundation has provided funding for personal safety equipment, uniforms, weapons, training, recognition events, as well as financial assistance to officers in need. I offer my heart felt thanks that they are there for us every day! I am proud to recognize and thank the Members of the Foundation for their selfless dedication and support of the Reserve Corps!

I have been the coordinator of the LAPD Chaplain Corps for approximately seven years and have witnessed first hand the commitment of our Department Chaplains . The Chaplains Corps consists of 65 members, all of which volunteer their time. Chaplain's minister to those in need during difficult times. They are seen conducting Department funerals, weddings, baptisms, counseling employees and conducting invocations and benedictions at special events. Chaplains are also first responders, responding to crisis situations throughout the city at all hours of the night. So who helps the Chaplains in time of need? The Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation!! The Reserve Foundation has helped to fund the Chaplains uniforms, training, supplies and recognition banquets. When the Chaplain Corps needs help, the Reserve Foundation steps up to help them with whatever the need might be. Their assistance has helped the Chaplains effectively minister to Department employees, while representing the Department in a professional manner. I thank the Reserve Foundation for helping take care of those who serve in His name.

As a recipient of financial assistance from the Los Angeles Police Reserve Foundation, at a time when I badly needed it, I am thankful for their existence. Without it I don't know where else I could have turned. They made a positive difference in my life and helped me beyond words.

I have been studying volunteer policing internationally as part of a Churchill Fellowship awarded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

Without doubt the LAPD Reserve is one of the best in the world, and that is to a very large degree down to the pioneering and inspirational work of the Foundation. Their tireless commitment to honouring those who serve as volunteers and raising vital funds to support their work is second to none.

It is a model I will bring back to the UK, and I know that other US police departments hope to try and emulate the success of the LA Foundation. They are a hard act to follow, and a real credit to the people of LA.
