Mission: The mission of the Los Angeles House of Ruth is to provide temporary and transitional shelter, permanent supportive housing and supportive services for homeless battered women and their children. For the past 35 years, Los Angeles House of Ruth has provided access to basic needs, essential supportive services, and housing to homeless single mothers and their children in Los Angeles County each year to assist them in their transition from crisis situation to self-sufficiency and stable, permanent housing and living. This program offers 80 shelter beds to homeless women and children from Los Angeles County and provides the supportive services necessary to help these families move from homelessness and poverty to permanent housing and self sufficiency. Each year our program serves close to 180 women and children with basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) and essential supportive services to help these families rebuild their lives. Additionally, we provide aftercare services to dozens of our former clients and offer referrals for emergency services to over 500 people.

Beautiful place. My 5 children and I were welcomed to this shelter. It was hard to live with rules but good for us. My kids were taken care of and so was I. I went to trade school. We were there 9 months. They helped me get a job and find a permanent place to live. Staff were generous and gentle. We will Anne grateful and call thus place hone.

I wish I had never been referred here. I'll start by saying if you're African American, this not a good environment for you. This program is ran by Hispanic women. They are racist and have no problem showing it. They favor their own. I was placed in a house that was infested with rats. I told my case manager about this and nothing was done about it. No traps, nothing. The house is nasty. Furniture is super dingy. Theres only 1 fork and 2 spoons in the kitchen. The soap despensers are filled with water instead of soap. Ridiculous curfew is 6:30pm. There's no heat in any of their houses. They don't provide you with blankets or a personal heater. But there's a heater in their office. I was always given extra chores every night. If another client didn't do her chore, they would tell me to do it. I was bullied by one of the other girls who, of course, is Mexican. The staff actually allowed this to happen. They would stand there and watch her yell at me, call me names, and invade my personal space and they wouldn't say/do anything about it. In fact, they seemed to be entertained by it. I eventually made friends with another Hispanic women who witnessed the bullying. She stood up for me one day. She told our Case Manager everything she witnessed her do to me. That same day, my case manager moved the bully, and my friend, out of the house, leaving me there alone. Im sure they moved my friend because they didn't like how close we were as friends. I guess she was wrong for befriending and defending a Black woman. Once they isolated me, I began to be mistreated even more. There's a staff member who would purposely open all of the windows in the house, before she leaves at 11pm with intentions to leave me and my baby freezing during the night. Its November. She knew I was very sensitive to the cold due to a chronic health condition. She did this to us every night. She disliked me for some unknown reason. I would catch her staring at me,
giving me dirty looks. She constantly yells when she speaks to me even though I'm always polite and do what she says. Through all of this, I remained quiet and friendly. I found myself crying every night before sleeping, staying in my room all day, and doing whatever I could to be liked and accepted by them. After 3 weeks I decided to leave. Now I have to start all over. Stay away from this place. You will not be treated with kindness, fairness, or respect especially if you're African American.

I'm truly disappointed in this non-profit House of Ruth Los Angeles I doubt that the people that started this organization know what kind of things that are going on in the House of Ruth Los Angeles there's favorites there's gossip there's racism and there's unfairness and the help that you get is your help the place is filthy and all they do is pressure you to hurry up and save money and move they don't care what you're going through inside or what you're dealing with steal from being out there the daycare they have there is not going to daycare they want your baby to sleep all day they don't let them play and the TV is running while they're in there so I don't have to deal with them they have no one-on-one arts and crafts with the kids they say their school on the facility but there's not the playground is filthy full of spiders and that one kid please of the kids even get to play there it's sad because the curfews at 6:30 can't get nothing done by then when you do make a complaint about something they basically ignore it or think you're crazy and it's very unfair for the ones that don't take their job seriously the case managers are ridiculous he said they're eating and gossiping all day and there's this one lazy chubby case manager that probably don't even have kids or even know what it's like to be in the shoes of a person that's gone through the abuse and the house she's been through with her child she rolls her eyes when you have a complaint or or feeling a certain way her face looks like she's smelling crap all day because she's staring at everybody like they're stupid I really think she shouldn't work here with stuff like that everything's wrong there's all these women that live in that home in Los Angeles that been there for like a year and they all don't even have papers they're all Mexican and Colombian and they favor them for some reason but get one American citizen that comes in whatever race they are they treat them a different way they're dirty and filthy the people that they allow live there I've gotten into a different rooms and stayed than them and each of them I walked out of leaving them so clean and I think that's why they moved me around like a clean all the filth they don't even give you a blanket they don't give you nothing to sleep with if you don't have one it's just sad how they are they're two faced they assume things and let you be a strong confident person after all that abuse and they tear you down again but not for me no more somebody's going to hear me somebody's going to help try not to go to this house tell him I love children they ignore my daughter she talks to them they only want to take care of babies so they can sleep all day there's a daycare but nobody's ever in there they want you to look for a place to live but they don't want you to look for a job it's just not good it's the opposite of good there's very passionate people that work there like two people at the most the rest bullies ! Get it to gether HOUSE OF FAKES! WITH OUT US U GOT NO JOB!!!!!

I’ve worked with the directors for years, and I’ve volunteered here. It’s an amazing non-profit with amazing people working here. It’s such an honest-to-goodness meaningful program that has helped so many women and children and is a integral part of their community.

The exceptional quality that makes Los Angeles House of Ruth such an effective organization is their commitment to helping and healing both the traumatized mother and her children. Women and their children seek shelter and safety, and while residing there they all receive the counseling, schooling, and life skills they need to emerge as healthy self-empowered families. Los Angeles House of Ruth is not just a shelter. It is a loving, healing and healthy environment where lives are transformed!

This organization is totally grass roots. It is evident that all of our donated dollars go directly to the families in need. The women who live there are making the changes that are needed to make progress in thier futires.

Los Angeles House of Ruth is one of those rare organizations where each member of the team - from staff to board to volunteers - is entirely dedicated to the cause! They have an amazing history of changing lives! I have spoken to several women who have been clients at House of Ruth and who know that their lives were literally SAVED because of the help offered from House of Ruth. They do everything they can to get single mothers on their feet.
