Causes: Education
Mission: Los angeles county education foundation (lacef) promotes life-changing opportunities through education, with an emphasis on children and teens whose options are limited by financial and social hardship. Lacef's primary interests are in the areas of student health, youth self-sufficiency, school readiness and hands-on learning.
Programs: The health-centered school project (aka "stay well, learn well") promotes the link between health and educational achievement by supporting the sustainability and expansion of health centers. This multi-year effort was funded in 2009 by a $3 million grant from the watts health foundation. Work includes (1) promoting strong commitments to school health centers in the education community (2) ensuring that public policy and resources support school health centers and the services they provide, (3) creating or strengthening partnerships with the private sector to secure resources and improve outcomes, and (4) providing support for pilot sites that demonstrate strong school-clinic collaboration.
