Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Coronavirus Relief Food Banks, Emergency Assistance, Food, Food Banks & Pantries, Human Services

Mission: Based on the belief that no one should suffer from hunger. The Lord’s Pantry exists to provide supplemental food assistance to eligible, low- income individuals and families in need. We deliver this service in conjunction with government food programs, through community donations and a network of committed volunteers, in a manner that places high value on respect and dignity. Recognizing that these Downingtown Area residents have other basic, unmet needs, we also strive to refer, and/or offer appropriate service to enhance their quality of life.

Geographic areas served: Downingtown School District

Programs: In addition to regular food distributions, the pantry also provides meals for each holiday including gifts at christmas, personal care items and back to school supplies for all of the children. In 2009, the pantry initiated a healthy food choice program to provide families with higher quality, fresh foods that are not typically donated by companies or individuals. In 2010, the pantry started the benefit enrollment assistance program (beap). Pantry volunteers, who have been thoroughly trained, work with clients to determine potential benefits for which they may be qualified, assist in the actual application process and follow-up diligently to ensure they are receiving the help necessary. In 2012, a partnership with nursing students from villanova and delaware county community college was started in which the students conduct cooking demonstrations of healthier foods, check blood pressures and educate families on various health issues.

The Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown PA provides amazing services to clients. Food distribution is tailored to clients’ wishes/needs as choices are available from a variety of categories. For example, instead of just getting 3 boxes of pasta, the client can choose from spaghetti, fettuccini, rotini and so much more. The cereal choices are endless. The vegetable and bean choices are huge as well. The Lord’s Pantry has many special events through the year: backpack and school supplies; sneakers at the start of school; Thanksgiving and Christmas events. There is always something going on. Additional help is provided to help clients access services that might be more challenging to understand but could really make a difference for someone. In summary, The Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown is a fabulous nonprofit that does everything it can to help community members who need help. I am happy to donate my time, my talent and my treasure to this wonderful organization.

I started volunteering at the Lords Pantry after I retired from teaching. It is truly one of the highlights of my week. I look forward every week to being able to help the clients we serve and to join with the community of volunteers that tirelessly dedicate their time and talents to helping others less fortunate.

I have been volunteering at the Lords Pantry of Downingtown since November of 2018. Hunger is right in our backyards. The Pantry not only takes great care of its clients with healthy food, fruit and vegetables but can help in many other ways too like assistance in navigating available services and aid, back-to-school supplies, special Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas giving, etc. The energy and dedication of the staff is unmatched. I've also enjoyed talking with the clients. Sometimes they just need someone to listen. The local grocery stores are also very generous with their donations. Some nights the clients leave with a fantastic variety of food and treats. This has been a very rewarding experience for me

When I started volunteering at the Pantry 4 years ago I had no idea of the magnitude of support that this organization offers to our community. In addition to the monthly food shop for clients they also provide basic needs such used furniture, household items, sneakers, school supplies and so much more. The Thanksgiving and Christmas Distributions are a sight to behold. I am so proud of the work that the Lord Pantry does for my community and I know I share this sentiment with all the volunteers.

The Lord's Pantry goes above and beyond. The staff get to know the clients and try to help them with personal needs and increased supplies when they are particularly needy. The leadership work extremely hard to provide for special needs all year long including extra food during the summer for school aged children, backpack distribution, special food supplies for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and Christmas gifts and sneaker distributions for children and veterans (as funding allows). They set aside sandwiches and water bottles for homeless people in the community. And the monthly food given to clients goes far beyond just a bag of groceries that many pantries provide with each client receiving plenty of fresh produce, meat, dairy products, paper products, and cleaning supplies . This is a top notch organization where ALL donations go directly to the people of the community.

My Daughter and I originally began volunteering at THE LORD"S PANTRY as part of a 20 hour volunteer requirement for her Catholic Confirmation. After her hours were met, we both wanted to continue. We could see the positive impact this organization was having on the community and wanted to remain part of it. Both the clients and the volunteer staff are wondering people. The volunteer staff works very hard to make sure they are meeting the needs of the ever changing environment we are currently in. I believe we are called to help others in their time of need and that is exactly what THE LORD'S PANTRY does everyday.

The Lord’s Pantry has been serving our Downingtown community for over 25 years.
Serving clients with compassion, respect and care guided by our volunteer leaders and many helping hands has always been the mission.
I have been a volunteer helper for over 10 years and It has been my honor and joy to be a small part of this good cause. I am grateful for all I have learned.
The Lord’s Pantry also keeps seeking new ways to help make our community a better place to live through extra services such as “BEAP” - benefits enrollment assistance program.
Helping our neighbors, friends and community workers helps us all.

I began volunteering at the pantry a little over a year ago and has become one of my highlights of each week. I've been touched so often by the people who volunteer and their caring spirit. So many hard working hands consistantly work to provide the best care, meet client's needs and offer extras when they possible can. It's been a joy and I've been humbled to be a part of these helpful hands in reaching out to our neighbors. The leaders here care deeply and strive to give unto others.

I have volunteered with the Lord’s Pantry since 2004. During that time, I have enjoyed my experiences both with other volunteers and with our clients. The volunteers are there because they want to be, making the atmosphere friendly and nonjudgmental. I look forward to seeing our clients monthly and catching up on their latest news. Many clients have told me that they enjoy the interaction with our volunteers and that they feel respected at the pantry. Overall, I have received so much more than I have given. The Lord’s Pantry is well run and organized. I am proud to be a volunteer there!

I have been fortunate to be a volunteer at the pantry for over five years. It has been a humbling, but rewarding experience. The staff of the pantry is dedicated and is to be commended for their time, talent, and efforts. I feel we truly make a difference in our clients lives, not only by supplying needed food items, but by the caring, smiling faces that greet them when they visit us. With so many negatives in their lives, we can be the one bright spot of their day.

My husband and I have been volunteering at the Lord's Pantry for several years and it has been a wonderful experience! We have come to know most of the other volunteers and many of the clients and are constantly reminded how much good can be accomplished when people work together. The Pantry volunteers have a strong commitment to giving back to our community and sharing our varied talents in ways that help the organization to do the most good for all. We have witnessed incredible generosity and feel fortunate to be involved with this great organization.

I am a volunteer at Lord's Pantry and has been touched by the help and caring I see given to so many families in our area. The way the Lord's Pantry is set up so that a family can come and shop for groceries and have a choice as to what their family likes is very different than other places who give what is available. I have new friends both in the other volunteers and the clients who I now know and am happy to share a part of their lives. Lord's Pantry is also so special in that each and every person involved is a volunteer - there are no paid positions. I truly consider this experience to be a blessing in my life.

I have been volunteering at the Lord's Pantry for two years. They have a dedicated team of volunteers to help the growing number of families that need food in our area. In addition, these families recently received thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings and next week we will distribute the christmas gifts from generous companies and individuals that have adopted them for the holiday season. It has truly been a rewarding experience for me.

The Lord's Pantry brings our community together in so many special ways besides the obvious needed help that it provides. Being aware of a need in our own community and being able to take part in such a friendly, clean, and family-type organization is simply a pleasure. There are so many simple, and inviting ways to donate to this great organization. People attend parties where the "gifts" are asked to be items to donate to our pantry! That makes everyone feel great!! The workers at the pantry are the most welcoming, kind and generous people and they make you feel wonderful. they really make you feel an important part of the community, as a recipient, donor or whatever part you take in the Lord's Pantry Family. Truly one of the best things about living in Chester County, is knowing that such an important, well-run, caring organization is there for all to take part.

We have been volunteering at the Pantry for several years now, and it is an honor to participate among such as hard-working and caring all-volunteer staff. Clients are received warmly, just like valued customers, and, should their need continue, eventually come to feel more like beloved family members. The Pantry's cheerful, warm, inviting and compassionate tone is set by the Board members, leaders, and senior volunteers, many of whom devote very long hours to Pantry operations and outreach, while somehow not only maintaining top quality of work, but also devising creative solutions to meet unique client needs. We have personally seen clients lives change, as despair evolves to hope, based on the support (food, friendship, respect, and more) they receive from Lords Pantry of Downingtown.

I volunteer at the Lord's Pantry on Monday and Thursday mornings. I'm so impressed with the efficiency, kindness and respect that this pantry is run. Also in our training, we are taught as volunteers to put our clients first. To be helpful, friendly and to treat them with dignity. It makes for a positive shopping experience for our clients and a good working experience for the volunteers. I have encouraged my friends to also become volunteers.

The Lord's Pantry of Downingtown is one of the nicest and most efficiently run food banks, I've ever been to. The staff there is very kind and helpful. They give their client a choice in the items given and make sure it is nutriently balanced. The staff is made up of volunteers that carry themselves like paid professionals. It is an excellently run non-profit. I am a veteran, and myself and a lot of vets go there, they are a God send for people on disability and fixed incomes.

I have been volunteering for the Lord's Pantry for about 10 years or so. I have seen it grow from a 2-closet area in the basement of a church to occupying an entire building that was purchased after extensive fund raising and private donations. There is more room for our clients to sit and wait comfortably while waiting to shop and there is more room for storage and an administrative office for the director. I enjoy volunteering at the Lord's Pantry. Most of our clients are so appreciative of what they receive and are very pleasant to work with. Jan Leaf is an excellent director and a very caring, generous and compassionate person.

I have been on both sides of the distribution from the Lord's Pantry in Downingtown. When my husband was out of work they were so generous and helpful getting us through some very difficult times. For the past several years we have been a supporter of the pantry to help other families who need help. We have even carried this into a religious education classes to teach the young to give back to the community. This year our class filled over 20 Christmas stockings for children there age who might not get anything for Christmas if it was not for the Lord's Pantry of Downingtown.

The Lord's Pantry provides not only food assistance to almost 800 families a month but does it in a way that always honors the dignity of those who need the services. The level of organization in that process is at the highest level. Volunteers are trained in food handling protocals for repackaging fresh foods or shelf life of donated food to be stocked. When clients receive their food, they use a shopping cart and, with a volunteer, select from categorical areas for both canned or dry staples as well as "healthy choice" selections that include milk, two fresh meats, a fresh fruit and vegetable. Addtionally, clients may select eggs, sliced cheese and margerine. Fresh breads and desserts, additional meats, cheeses and other items donated by local grocers are available and are picked up by volunteers, date checked and stocked. When it was determined that bananas often became over-ripe and might be wasted, a volunteer printed a recipe for banana bread using those bananas and on an on-going basis, packages ziplock bags of the dry ingredients for making banana bread. Similarly, in the summer when fresh produce is abundant and brought from local gardens, nursing students demonstrate how to cook delicious dishes using fresh vegetables, provide the clients with the recipe and a bag of the ingredients to cook them at home. Counselling services are also offered by knowledgeable volunteers in additonal services available to clients of which they might otherwise be unaware, such as energy assistance, job counselling, food stamps, and medical clinics, to mention only a few. Throughout the year there are additional special distributions to clients, some of which include, Easter, cold and flu, back to school, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The building that houses all these services is mortgage free and ALL involved in providing the services, including the directors, are volunteers. I can not imagine a better organization or a better mission.

The Lord's Pantry serves almost 800 clients monthly, providing food and special services in an environment that preserves the dignity and sense of self-worth of those served. Clients leave with shopping carts full of staples, fresh produce (in Summer from locally-grown fields) and "healthy choice" selections that each client "shops" for. At Thanksgiving there are special appetizer-to-dessert meals with whole turkeys, etc. In addition, September brings back-packs for clients' school-age children, full of school supplies. The Pantry also provides "healthy cooking" classes to educate clients on preparation of wholesome and fresh foods that may be unfamiliar but bring variety to menus. There is a dedicated core of volunteers, and not a penny goes to "management" - from top to bottom time and effort is strictly voluntary. This organization and its philosophy of emphasizing the dignity of all those served is inspiring.

The Lord's Pantry is so much more than an emergency food cupboard. Along with an overflowing shopping cart full of food each month, clients also are offered special distributions throughout the year, including household products, cold and flu care packages, Thanksgiving meals, Christmas meals and gifts, and back-to-school supplies; one-on-one counseling sessions to navigate through state and federal benefit and utility company bureaucracies; budgeting workshops; nutrition and cooking education; and health screenings by nursing students. All of this is completed by volunteers - no paid staff here. My wife and I have volunteered at the Pantry since 2004 and have loved every minute of it.

This is the most urgent time for feeding programs in the last 70 years. In this country of plenty, there are so many hungry people. The Lord's Pantry is the only Emergency Food Cupboard serving the Downingtown, Exton, and Lionville areas. They have served 3660 families to-date in 2009. The growth in need is out-paced only by the resolve of an all-volunteer staff, led by director, Jan Leaf. Clients are treated with respect and dignity; they are allowed to chooses foods they want rather that receiving a prepared bag or box of foods. The work done there is inspiring for those served and those serving.

We have been volunteering for several years and have seen the dedication of the other volunteers, as well as the fantastic, caring assistance that our clients receive. Even though the client base has nearly doubled over the past four years as the US economy plunged, the Pantry has somehow risen to the challenge with ever-improving services. Most recently, it was a joy to see the true spirit of the 2010 Christmas season, as our all-volunteer organization distributed Christmas dinner fixings to over 200 families and answered the precise Christmas wishes of over 500 children! Then, two days later, took to the task of delivering "senior boxes" to the elderly, and continuing to provide emergency food supplies to over 100 families per week - - our clients select their own groceries in an uplifting, shopping-like experience. The dedicated volunteers take their cue from the exceptional role models on the Board and in leadership positions, all of whom fight hunger passionately and wisely without a penny of salary

I have been a volunteer with the Lord's Pantry for over 20 years. When I first discovered it the whole operation worked out of two double closets. The clients received a grocery bag of canned vegetables and meats and the one memory that sticks in my mind was the box of saltines...clients received one stack of crackers. Today clients leave, after making their own choices, with a shopping cart filled to the brim. To say that the pantry has come a long way is understating the enormity of the organization and it's volunteers [no one is paid]. Through amazing leadership, a board of directors with visions, tremendous contributions from the community and many helping hands, the Lords Pantry is an outstanding example of love and commitment to an ever growing need.

In 2009, we volunteered with the Thanksgiving Dinner distribution as well as the Christmas Present Distribution Setup. We so enjoyed our experience that we are volunteering again this Holiday season. We were so impressed by the organization's ability to assemble not only volunteers but solicit donations/contributions to help those in need in the Lionville/Exton/Downingtown area. With the economic downturn that's effecting so many, it's heartwarming to see the continued outpouring of care and compassion for those in need. The Lord's Pantry of Downingtown reminds us of the little blue train engine that is willing to try, and while repeating the mantra "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can" overcomes a seemingly impossible task. I have been going to the Lords Pantry for over a year now. I am a single mother of two growing Boys ages 17 and 11. I was making $45,000/yr when I lost my job due to this economic crisis. I depleted my savings and had no where else but to turn to some social services. I was turned down by alot of places due to the fact that I do earn some type of income but it just does not seem like enough to make it in these times. Everything seems to be on the rise but wages. So a friend suggessted I turn to the Lords Pantry, which I must tell you I was resistent to do because I was ashamed of not being able to provide as well as I used to for my children. Jan and the staff made me feel completely at ease and never made me feel less than "normal". They have supplied my kids with christmas gifts, back to school items and other numerous donations. I am also a full time human service major in college and hope to one day be able to give back to this great organization. It is good to have a place to go for people like me, who are considered not poor enough to receive state aid but yet not rich enough to self sustain. Jan and the staff are courteous and gracious and God will bless them someday for the work they do ffor this community. If we had more people like them in this world it would be such a better place.

The Lord's Pantry provides vital assistance to the Downingtown community through food to the most needy. The pantry is well run with services provided on a fair and equal basis to those in need. The experience is not of a classical food bank, but one where the clientele is allowed to shop in the pantry, just as if they were in a supermarket. This removes the stigma of those in need and provide a wholesome experience in receiving much needed assistance.

The Lord's Pantry deserves six stars for its contribution to the people of need in the Downingtown area. Under the leadership of Jan Leaf and Linda, her assistant, the Pantry serves over 700 clients with about 100 caring volunteers. The clients receive not only food monthly but also help at holidays and other special occasions. This December the Pantry coordinated and distributed toys for 500 children. We have volunteered for about a dozen years such as picking up food, stocking shelves, doing paperwork and helping with improvements in the building.

I have been a volunteer for 6 years at the Lord's Food Pantry and I have never in my life been involved in a more incredible agency!!! The commitment of its director and co director are amazing and completely volunteer and the respect that is shown to the clients is beyond compare. I am so very proud to be part of this organization. I will continue to do anything I can to stay involved at the pantry where I believe the commitment to its clients always comes FIRST.

The Lord's Pantry has been serving the needy of the greater Downingtown area for over forty years. It is an all volunteer agency that serves it clients with dignity and respect. It has grown rapidly over the last few years to the point where it has over 700 clients. I have been involved with the Lord's Pantry for over six years and have been inspired by the leadership and dedication of the director, assistant director and the many other volunteers dedicated to serving the needy.

We have seen the Lord's Pantry of Downingtown grow to its current size over the last decade and a half. A family friend introduced us to the good works that were being done at this local organization. The concept that a few community members could work together to raise funds, garner local vendor support and ignite the passion of volunteers within our community to serve others who were in need was lofty; however, that has been what the leaders of the Pantry have accomplished! We have chosen to support this non-profit organization in good times and in bad, through financial support and physically stocking the shelves. Our four children, two foster children and our foster-grandson have all helped out when we were called upon and the experience has been an invaluable education for our family. The Lord's Pantry of Downingtown is the culmination of the efforts of so many leaders, volunteers, businesses and donors; this entity should be the model for the creation of other similar entities based on its success. We are proud to financially and emotionally support the Lord's Pantry of Downingtown!

The Lord's Pantry does so much for our community. The volunteers are very kind and generous and organized. My son did his high school project there and it made him appreciate what he has and the importance of sharing his time and talent helping others.

The Lord's Pantry brings together a variety volunteers who all work together to collect, organize and distribute food to qualified individuals and families. My experience at the Lord's Pantry has built my character and brought the warmth of charity into my heart. Jan Leaf has been a family friend and a mother figure in my life and her work at the Lord's Pantry has been a perfect example of a person who puts community and the welfare of others ahead of his or her own priorities. Last winter I was able to spend a few weeks working close with her and I really got to view the hours of personal time that Jan puts into the pantry. Downingtown is truly blessed to have Jan Leaf and the volunteers at the Lord's Pantry.

I've known the director of Lord's Pantry my entire life and this is how I became involved with this nonprofit organization. Her daughter is one of my best friends and we grew up together; I started going to the Lord's Pantry at a very young age. Now that I am a junior in college, I realize the impact the Lord's Pantry has had on my life. As I'm beginning to student teach next semester, I realize the importance of God's love in a young child's life. The Lord's Pantry shares God's love through food, a necessity that is often taken for granted in many households. The people who run the Lord's Pantry and volunteer are the people who are making the world a better place.
