Mission: To engage southern californians with adventurous opera experiences of rarely performed works. Long beach opera produces operas in performing arts venues in long beach and regionally, as well as in site specific locations such as producing "fallujah", an opera about an iraqi war veteran with ptsd at the long beach armory. Long beach opera produces opera for youth in schools across the region, and "coincidences", educational and informative events relating to the operas performed that season.
Programs: Lbo produced five operas during the fiscal year. They were attended by people from long beach, california, the usa, and the world.
opera encounter is lbo's innovative education initiative, begun in 2007. It includes opera@school (opera performances in schools) and opera access (free & discounted tickets to students and low-income families for productions and dress rehersals). Participating schools increased from 10 to 17. Students participating in opera access increased from 600 to 1,000 and schools from 6 to 12.
