Literacy Source

One day I was working with one of my computer tutoring students and was showing him the keyboard shortcuts for cut, copy and paste. When we were done with the lesson he exclaimed “This is great! Now I can go home and show my son how to do this.” He was obviously very happy to have mastered a skill that he could share with his son.

At this point that I realized that tutoring isn’t just about teaching the student new skills. It is about helping them gain confidence in their abilities. And in this case it was also about helping a father find common ground with his son.

For me, the tutoring program helps me to learn too. Every session teaches me something new about the people I am working with… what their needs are and how to help them succeed in our modern society. All-in-all, I find working here at Literacy Source to be very rewarding.

Meeting the people that have been helped by the organization is very impressive. Whether they are ESL students or non-high school graduates the stories of progress in self esteem and opportunity for work is uplifting. It is especially heartwarming to meet families of those that have worked to earn a certification/degree or become a citizen. The education of a person impacts and nourishes so many more around them than just themselves.

I am taking Computer classes , I took I am taking Computer classes, Computer tutor for 2 months and 20 days,Community club, math ,English pron., public speech for a year and reading I start last month.So I learn very much in Literacy source and I improof my English and I know very much about computer:- how to find job, how to email,how to find metro schedual ,how to find map any way many knowlege I receive also the other classes too I receive many many knowleges, therefore I thank my teachers very very much because they are Exellent teahers we have. I am very much happy. I appriciate all my teachers. Also I appriciate Literacy Source very much.

I suffered a bad car accident and lost a lot of my basic knowledge of math, writing and computer skills. A friend suggested to contact Literary Source because it was a Non-profit organization and perhaps I could get help there. I had started to take classes at the Greenwood Senior Center (another place suggested by friends) and had a good experience there, but I had to have some eye surgery and that was when a visiting friend suggested Literary Source for math. I am nearing 80, so I came to apply for tutoring in order to recover my memory. (after my accident I could not think, talk, walk, or driv e). Five years later I am doing all those things again but with a little difficulty. My hearing was affected by the accident, too. I plan to take care of this sometime in the future (need to buy hearing aids). I am living on a pension. When I came to Literary Source I found a lot of help and understanding; found people of several ages, races and creeds. It was a wonderful experience. The Literary Source's personnel found me tutors for math and computer after putting me in a waiting list for a while. When I started taking the classes, I expressedly say that--if there was someone looking for a job that needed the place I was taking--I more than gladly accept being taken away. Thus far, it had not happen. The computer tutor I was given was very kind and patient. My retention skill did suffer a lot. I still can do the things while the instructor is nearby. Something completely different when I am alone. This is aggravated by the fact that my personal laptop computer not always allows me to access the internet; thus I get frustated. My math instructor is a wonderful knowledgeable young man that together with a lady instructor (I am in a group class now) take care of all of us that had different needs and knowledge. They always explain the items we cannot understand with a lot of patience and great humor. They never make us feel bad if we do not understand. Now, I have joined a computer class with several students. I have received advice on my questions and help when I am unable to follow the instructions. I missed several classes because I got sick with bronconeumonia and, under the doctor's advice, I remained recluse at home. I explained this to the LS personnel and they allowed me to return to classes.
