The people involved in the Literacy Council are extremely professional, very organized, very caring and always wanting to know how they can be better. They help so many people to function successfully in an English speaking society.
I have been tutoring for the Literacy Council for six years, because I believe that I am making a difference in my students' lives. They gain confidence and improve their language skills. The smiling faces at the end of each class are the proof that the Literacy Council is a valuable asset to southwestern Pennsylvania.
I have been tutoring with the Literacy Council for 5 years, It is one of the most rewarding experiences for me. There is a special relationship between the students and the tutors. I always have a good time when I am tutoring. It is so enjoyable to watch the students as they gain confidence when they are speaking.
The Literacy Council of Southwestern PA helps so many students and their families trying to better themselves. During COVID they have been helping SO MANY students and families who do not qualify for the stimulus checks by creating the Student Emergency Relief Fund (SERF). I am so happy to be apart of this great organization.
This is the finest nonprofit in our three-county area. The two negative reviews were written by the same individual who had to be fired for poor performance and a lack of integrity. The quality of tutoring and the leadership in this organization are superb. This is the best volunteer experience I have ever had and all 50 of our tutors agree with me. Our students excel. We know we are changing lives for the better.

I could not disagree more with the low rating. I have served on the Board of Directors of this organization for 4 years, and I stay because it is a top-notch organization, with an excellent staff and a dedicated, hard-working Board that has fought tooth and nail to give the Literacy Council heft, credibility, adequate resources, and a future.
The President of the Board is so dedicated that she gives 40 hours a week to Literacy Council work, year after year, with no salary. She was also named Tutor of the Year in PA in Pennsylvania for 2018.
I am truly proud and humbled to serve this organization, with its 187 students from 40 different countries.

I would not recommend that anyone volunteer at this organization. There are other nonprofits better deserving of your time and talents. This particular one is run by a retired colonel who still thinks she is in the army. She will order you around, criticize you in front of your peers --and delight in it. She is arrogant, rude, totally full of herself and can be downright nasty. She is self-centered and could care less what you or others think of her. Stay away from the organization.
