I have tutored at the Literacy Council for more than five years. The LC helps adults of all ages, backgrounds, and educational levels with a myriad learning programs such GED, computer skills, preparation for various career certifications, general skills for re-entering the job market etc. Students and tutors are matched by interest/need and are free to set their instructional sessions according to their own mutually compatible schedules. I found my niche with basic ESOL and Citizenship Candidates. After a few classes working one-to -one, I learned more about my student's goals and needs and then tailored my lessons to the concerns most relevant to his/her situation. This kept the student motivated and cooperatively engaged. (Example: One student was the parent of a kindergarten child. She wanted to read books with him in English and asked to bring in a picture book each class to practice and discuss with me before she would share it with her son. It was a natural motivation springing from her daily life that encouraged her and her child to practice English meaningfully between our classes.)Also, I frequently assist my students in interfacing with the larger community by sharing information about free or inexpensive activities at their local library, Arts Center, public schools, Parks and Rec., etc. This naturally exposes the student (and often their families) to the language and customs of the area so they are more comfortable in their interactions. They become more confident in participating in and contributing to community activities. Susan Schubert, LC tutor

I've been a tutor at LCCC for six months. It's an evolving experience and a reciprocal arrangement. My students and I learn from each other. We study the formal, like the rules of English grammar, and the informal, slang and idioms, or never leave money on the table. I like to teach writing by stressing clear, concise sentences and avoiding academic jargon, like genre and inference. Think it, say it, write it clearly. I also assist students in navigating bureaucracy -- how to fill out a form, apply to a job, and file taxes. Or, simple daily tasks aimed at long-term personal advancement. LCCC is a great organization. The core staff is upbeat, positive and creative. Course materials and tutoring tips are plentiful, and are designed to match the current learning level of each student. It's been a motivating and mind-moving experience. I likely recommend it.

This is a well run organization providing a critical service to our community. My degree is in Computer Science and Mathematics and I first became involved with the Literacy Council because of my interest in tutoring Math. I’m retired and wanted to give back to the community. Over the last 2 years I have shifted to tutoring GED students in all 4 areas of the test and enjoy it. The support the organization provides to us tutors is excellent and includes meeting spaces, training, tutor materials library, selection tips, tutor meetings that include our students which gives them an opportunity to share their success, and much more.

I have been a tutor with Literacy Council of Carroll County for several years. First of all, I would like to thank the staff for all their support. They are always cheerful, helpful and welcoming to both students and tutors.
Second, I would like to thank the students I have tutored in the past and those I am currently tutoring. I am currently teaching digital literacy to students with little or no computer experience. It always brings a smile to my face when I see a student's face light up and hear the words "I got it now!".
What a wonderful way to time! I am not only able to give, but to receive at the same time and I think the students have little fun also.

Wonderful organization with a great group of tutors who volunteer their time to work with adults in Carroll County, MD who need help from traditional academics, to receiving a GED, achieving citizenship, learning to speak English, and many other life skills. There are many success stories of students reaching their goals.
