Mission: Research the impact of dance on the life of people of the san francisco area and educate the public about the results through classes, workshops, performances, public assistance and publications.
Programs: In 2017-18, liss fain dance conducted an extensive outreach program focused on letter writing. With the goal of reaching a broad spectrum of people in the bay area and engaging them in writing letters, the company used all social media platformseblasts, instagram, facebook, twitteras well as placing materials in offices, libraries and schools. This letter writing initiative was the basis of the companys ongoing workshops at 826 valencia, a san francisco organization that supports literacy and arts in young people. The reading of some of these letters became part of the installation work the company premiered at odc theater on march 1-3, 2018. Odc theater. The caf in the lobby of the theater provided an installation for daytime and evening patrons to participate in the letter writing project. As part of the outreach, people were invited to attend performances of the installation work to experience how the company integrated these letters and the stories they told into highly physical choreography. This work was a co-presentation with odc theater, which donated half of the cost of theater rental and crew time, and provided their in-house marketing support. The outreach and the creation of the installation work was also supported by a grant from the kenneth r. Rainin foundation. Partial support for the companys workshops with elementary and middle school students at 826 valencia is provided by the kellogg foundation and individual fundraising. Following these performances, the company taught an intensive workshop for pre-professional and professional dancers at the san francisco conservatory of dance.
