Causes: Disaster Aid, Search & Rescue Squads
Mission: Lifeflight provides critical care and specialized medical transport by air and ground ambulances to the entire state of maine and under mutual aid to hospitals and ems agencies in new hampshire, vermont, and massachusetts.
Programs: In fy2017 lifeflight provided resuscitation and transport to 1929 patients originating from 124 communities, 33 referring hospitals in maine, 17 communities and 10 hospitals in new hampshire, 5 communities and 2 hospitals in massachusetts, 2 hospitals in vermont, and additional hospitals in connecticut, pennsylvania, as well the provinces of nova scotia and quebec. Patients were transported to 22 receiving hospitals in maine, new hampshire, massachusetts, and pennsylvania. Lifeflight is financially supported by care to patients with funding from the lifeflight foundation to support aviation infrastructure, specialized medical equipment, aircraft, and outreach education. Lifeflight of maine (lom) provides care to critically ill and injured patients without regard to the ability to pay for care or insurance status. In fy17 lom incurred costs to care for patients unable to pay of $405,712 for charity care and $1,554,229 in bad debt. Contractual allowances with third party payors including reductions in revenue for medicare and mainecare beneficiaries reduced revenue by $8,251,931.
in addition to providing care to critically ill and injured patients, during fy17 lom supported a private-public aviation infrastructure with the state of maine and the federal aviation administration including: - staffing for the maintenance support and commissioning for 16 automated weather observation systems located at rural airports and hospitals in belfast, machias, princeton, fort kent, jackman, greenville, carrabassett, skowhegan, farmington, rumford, bethel, eastport, and brunswick, bridgton, and lewiston, and matinicus, vinalhaven, and monhegan islands. - technical and consulting support including use of helicopter for flight sound study for new helipads at maine medical center in portland- technical consulting and support for runway extension projects in rangeley, machias, and jackman - the maintenance of 39 helicopter instrument flight approach and departure procedures at hospitals, communities, islands, and rural airports; - support for fuel trucks at northern aroostook regional airport in frenchville and northern maine regional airport in presque islelifeflight also runs a remote access project with over 120 remote access points in conjunction with the maine department of conservation, the maine emergency management agency, maine fire chiefs association, homeland security, public safety agencies, and numerous private landowners, woodland and forest product companies as well as outdoor recreation organizations. During fy17, lifeflight continued to provide an on-line database of over 700 approved landing sites with access granted to all of the 911 public safety regional communication centers for coordination of emergency response.
in support of operational safety and appropriate use, lifeflight provided staff and helicopters for 61 ground safety user courses with 854 participants. Supporting the chain of survival and with assistance from the lifeflight foundation, lom provides physicians and clinical staff supporting continuing medical education. In fy2017 lifeflight provided 13 continuing clinical education and high fidelity simulation programs for 137 physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, and emt's.
