Mission: Part i, line 1 and part iii, line 1 legion arts, inc. Is an artist-run organization that promotes new and innovative expression in the visual, performing, literary and electronic arts; fosters creative interaction between artists, their communities and society; and encourages the imaginative exploration of contemporary ideas and experiences.
Programs: Global arts platform: in its role of introducing audiences to new art experiences, legion arts presented 19 art exhibits and 123 performing arts events. These presentations, which also included landfall, a four-day festival of world music, featured emerging and established artists from across the united states and more than a dozen other countries. During the year, legion arts also maintained presenting partnerships with six local organizations. In total, these programs employed 461 artists, reaching an audience of 24,923.
center for the creative city: as the owner and operator of csps hall, a landmark building flooded in 2008 and restored in 2010-11, legion arts serves as an anchor for the emerging new bohemia arts district as well as the larger community. Legion arts offers meeting and work space to some 40 community groups and neighborhood initiatives, in addition to housing three retail tenants and a variety of arts-based community engagement activities. Participants directly served numbered 8,902.
iowa artist network: legion arts provides a range of services designed to support local and visiting artists in their professional development. These services include: the arts incubator at csps hall, the work of art business curriculum, fiscal sponsorships, the iowa artist relief fund, the artists in schools fund and health care resources for artists. In addition, funding and space are specifically allocated for artists engaged in artist residencies and in the creation of new work. During the year, this program served an estimated 280 artists.
