MISSION: To provide comfort and care to individuals critically ill due to condition related to AIDS in a home-like setting.
Target demographics: people living with HIV/AIDS in North Texas
Direct beneficiaries per year: 530 counseling clients, 194 women living with HIV/AIDS, 56 homeless clients living with HIV/AIDS, 268 potentially homeless clients living with HIV/AIDS, 25 critically and terminally ill clients living with HIV/AIDS, 225 individuals from the community were educated about HIV and Housing
Geographic areas served: Dallas, TX
Programs: individual, couples, family, and group counseling, men’s and women’s groups, 24-hour emergency on-call services, walk-in clinic, minority outreach counseling, intensive outpatient program (IOP), supportive outpatient program, and aftercare groups for substance abuse, special care housing (i.e., Founders Cottage), housing referral services (i.e., Homebase for Housing), homeless programs (i.e., Master Leasing Program), and women’s programs (i.e., Grace Project), including the nation’s largest conference for women living with HIV themselves. Our agency is well known for the quality and timeliness of our culturally sensitive, evidence-based, direct services among HIV/AIDS service providers and other community agencies. Legacy Counseling Center is the largest and primary provider of HIV specific counseling services in North Texas. Our housing facility, Legacy Founders Cottage, has been cited by Texas Department of Health officials as a model special care housing facility for critically ill people living with AIDS. We are also an approved internship site for the Social Work school of the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Women’s University, and the University of North Texas. Legacy is an approved continuing education provider for Licensed Counselors, as well as Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, and Social Workers, and provides several educational seminars on mental health and HIV issues to clients and service providers every year. Legacy stays on the cutting edge of HIV/AIDS issues and provides a safe place for clients to disclose their HIV status. This is not a luxury, but a necessity.
