Leatherwood Matters has done amazing work in Missouri and Kansas and has since expanded to South Carolina. They have honored an exceptional woman in Mildred Wolfe who lived a life of accomplishments in multiple areas.
They do it all in working with kids to gain confidence by creating artwork, learning how to be creative and overall challenge themselves to be the masters of their own destiny. Ms. Wolfe would be delighted to see the torch being passed on to the next generation. Leatherwood simply does a fantastic job in everything that they do.
Uniting Community, Family & History. The Mattoon Presbyterian Church held its 2025 Juneteenth Celebration whereby I met extended family and enjoyed the community involvement at the event. There was the MLJLW Art Scholarship Kick Off (Mildred Leatherwood) which will help support 2 local schools art programs. The event had art activity tables displaying completed works by the young attendees. Dr. Smith enlightened the community with his detailed speech on Juneteenth from its inception to current day status. We had a pleasingly tasteful, nutritional meal and cooking demonstration from the Wakanda Restaurant of Greenville. Leatherwood Matters is a channel to support and display the creative works and community involvement of our youth of tomorrow.
In the honor of Mildred Leatherwood Wolfe this is great for the Children and the Community!!
Grandma Mildred always told many stories about Greenville, SC!!
Being newly acquainted with Leatherwood Matters I have seen the positive works that have been accomplished and to be continued with the dedicated leadership.
Leatherwood MATTERS continues its focus on ways to encourage and promote youth's contributions as evidenced by establishing the I AM MLJLW Memorial Art Scholarship. Mildred L J Leatherwood Wolfe's legacy is rooted in real-life experiences and will continue specific efforts of healing and creativity for future generations. Youth Expression, Creativity, and Empowerment is what matters -- with eyes keenly focused on the future.

I am a pledge donor to Leatherwood MATTERS because I believe deeply in its mission to support and uplift youth facing adversity. This organization doesn’t just offer services—it creates a community of compassion where every child is seen, heard, and valued. By contributing, I help ensure that kids receive crucial resources, supportive relationships, and opportunities for growth and healing. My belief in their work fuels my giving—it’s more than a donation; it’s a declaration that every child deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to thrive.
I am a proud donor of the Leatherwood Art Scholarship. I feel this is a great resource for youth that may have limited exposure to these type programs due to cost and other variables.
Great Job here!!! Keep up the great work!!
