Last Mile4D

Ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a difficult task, but with so many physical, social, educational and economic benefits for the young women who are spared. Last Mile4D has developed a culturally sensitive but very effective method for reducing FGM in its targeted communities. They have hard data to measure and demonstrate their effectiveness, and they accomplish this with very efficient use of their financial resources. I am proud to support them.

When considering supporting a non-profit organization, the first question one asks is: what causes deserve our support? Last Mile4D is focused on helping a particularly vulnerable group of young women at a stage in life where medical decisions will have a life-long impact. Mahnaz Harrison has assembled a devoted team of workers to help not only eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) but introduce these young women to the power of education to free them from the drudgeries of village life. In the 10 years since their inception,Last Mile4D has had a disproportionately high impact not only on preventing FGM but in introducing young women to the advantages of education and becoming vital members of the work force and impactful community members. The resources donors make available to Last Mile4D have made a difference in thousands of young women who are now able to assist their communities in providing a future for the next generation.

LM4D saves the precious lives of women. By focusing on eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM), this women-run non-profit helps bring an end to the direct health and psychological damage associated with cutting and mutilating the girls. But it also saves them from a life of poverty, as girls who are cut are often relegated to menial and manual work, saves them from child marriage to much older men and saves their future by keeping them in school. LM4D has a winning trifecta approach to ending FGM, combining awareness building, community training and law enforcement (FGM is illegal in most places). LM4D is shining a light on what had been a silent and hidden crime against women and therefore on humanity. The girls who are part of the LM4D program know their right to refuse being cut. My experience as a board member and supporter of Last Mile4D has shown me that incredible achievements can be made when a nonprofit has an extraordinary mission paired with leadership and team members that are effective, transparent and committed.

Last Mile4D (LM4D) is a Washington, DC-based organization that has championed the rights of women and girls who live in communities disconnected from health and other infrastructure such as roads, running water or hospitals. LM4D develops health and safety solutions for women and girls living in oppressive environments in the Last Mile and hence the name, Last Mile4D.

In Kenya, LM4D engages with communities to provide training, education, and outreach aimed at preventing harm to young girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. Directed by exceptional leadership, LM4D has demonstrated that involving and educating community members can significantly protect girls and their families.

LM4D has developed a unique platform called V4D, which generates real-time data to identify girls at risk of FGM. Through collaboration with local partners—including educators, law enforcement, religious leaders, and parents/families—LM4D implements timely interventions to rescue these girls. The V4D platform has enabled the enrollment of thousands of girls, and through a community outreach campaign, the Last Mile4D team has reached over 5,500 community members since its inception.

I am an economist and lawyer, having served in public service in Brazil for the past 25 years. I am currently pursuing a certification in nonprofit management at Pitt University. I was asked to be part of LM4D as advisor less than a year ago. From being an outsider, i.e. individual donor, to being an insider—who was virtually introduced to Board Members—I was extremely glad to see that the passion to help the girls is shared throughout the organization. I’m looking forward to continue working with them to advocate and educate the girls, their parents, local communities and general public on FGM.

Last Mile 4D is unique in how it approaches the eradication of FGM (female genital mutilation). It uses technology, community training and intervention as a trifecta for attacking the root causes and cultural practices that support this unhealthy practice perpetrated on women. I first met Mrs. Mahnaz Harrison few years ago when she came to Georgia to support the healthcare system. She spent several month at the Georgian National Museum to train the staff in organisation management as a volunteer. I was lucky to be the member of the group she has been working with. I would say that she gave us as much (if not more) as we could learn in the University. It is her grace if I have managerial skills today and can consider myself as a leader. Other then professional training she also educated us about the women rights and in general self-representation in the world of business. Since in Georgia there is no culture of volunteerism and giving away time and knowledge without getting any monetary profit, it was another amazing aspect of the way of life that she has introduced to us. I am blessed I had a chance to meet, learn and being inspired by this amazing, wonderful woman who has changed my perception of life and myself and I am sure that I am not the only one.

I will not be able to find enough words to thank her for the knowledge, self estimation and assertiveness and many more she gave to me, only what I could wish is that she reached all her goals as I know changes she makes is beneficial for everyone and is another brick in building the better world.

Last Mile4D uses innovative methods to apply technology to impact lives of populations living in the last miles of societies. Reaching and meeting the needs of underserved communities is a noble task that organizations should strive to achieve and I am glad Last Mile4D is impacting these lives.

I love working for Last Mile4D and Mahnaz harrison. We have done a lot of trainings for social services staff on domestic violence in Georgia and for other developing countries. The capacity building workshops led by Mahnaz brought dramatic changes to Georgia's DV reporting and respond as well as raising awareness on the Issue in Georgia and elswere we have worked together.

LMile4D is doing amazing work in Kenya despite the Pandemic that is causing even more harm to young woman. There are rising incidents of sexual abuse and more genital mutilation. I am fortunate to be educated by the CEO Mahnaz Harrison. I understand it is illegal in Kenya to do FGM and police are suppose to enforce this law but it is not happening on the scale that it is needed. Protection is coming from LMile4D and they are operating on a shoe string so I am happy to donate.

I have been following LM4D admiringly for years but have recently been struck by their wonderful work on eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM). I’m particularly impressed how they use real-time data to track girls at risk and then have developed (in collaboration with and buy-in from local educators, law enforcement, religious figures and even parents) in-time Intervention measures. The testimonials from the girls who have been spared have been particularly moving to witness. They have made great strides in scaling their efforts beyond their initial test in Kuria, Kenya, and are now ready to expand to more communities in Kenya and in other countries in Africa with high incidences of FGM. I'm so proud to write about LastMile4D. LastMile4D has been providing critical services to women and girls in Kenya for the past few years, focused on ending female genital mutilation (FGM), a violation of women's human rights. I am honored to have been on the Board of Last Mile4D since the beginning. It's the brainchild of Mahnaz Harrison, who has devoted her professional career to saving lives in developing countries by trying to provide healthcare to those who have none. Last Mile4D is currently focused on fighting FGM (female genital mutilation) in Kenya, working with volunteers and activists on the ground to register and track girls at risk. This actually works and girls are actually being rescued in the hundreds, but the task is vast. FGM, although widely illegal, is prevalent in large parts of Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. We need more resources to expand the work and prevent this life-changing abuse from wrecking the lives of countless thousands more girls and young women.

I have been privileged to learn how the Last Mile4D helps woman who experience mutilation and other forms abuse learn a new way. I have learned how they reach out to generations to educate daughters, mothers and grandmothers to learn healthy living practices. I see how the Last Mile4D has visited villages, connected with the women and modeled good farming and healthful practices. This is a great non-profit and it is connecting wonderful woman globally.

I came to know Lastmile4D and its noble work in February, 2016. Ours was love at first sight as we had both attended an AIDF Conference in Ethiopia. Since then we became great partners in implementing programs and projects that enlighten the undeserved population in Kenya and those in the last mile. Together we have worked in 2 programs; ‘’Reproductive, Maternal, New-born and Child Health Program’’ in Kibera Slums and the ‘’FGM eradication Program’’ in Kuria, Migori County. All of these geared towards the well being of women and girls in our country.
Last Mile4D has really altered all our programs and brought in new life in the way we harness technology and implement all our programs to a great stride. I recommend Lastmile4D as a noble organization that works for the betterment of women and girls.
