Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Emergency Assistance, Human Services, Personal Social Services

Mission: Bent County is one of the six poorest counties in southeastern Colorado. The county has been in a drought the past eight years and many people are suffering economically. Any increase in the amount of gasoine, electricity, propane, food, taxes, or and illness in their family leaves them in need. Helping Hands is trying to meet as many needs as possible while helping applicants with budgeting classes, debt reduction, filling out applications, free income tax assistance, free transportation to medical appointments....all emergencies are considered.

In 2010, a family of four, moved to Las Animas to look after the elderly parents!
We had a couple years where we needed help to keep our electricity on. We were told to contact, "Sharon Barber", @helping hands in Las Animas! She was friendly, kind, and over worked! I kind of felt bad to need her help, when I would have happily cooked some comfort food, and gave her a good movie to fall asleep to.
Our grandson, 4, at the time, was cold, and our electricity was so much, that we tried to regulate the heat and elec. Sometimes slightly low temps, but we had to conserve, then we were about to get power shut off again, and Sharon Barber,Helping Hands, pulled us out of that predicament! We are so very grateful to her, and this organization!
Also, she brought food from her own cupboards one time, so we would have the four food groups, for a few days anyway!
I wish I had some money to donate, but for now, I can tell you our struggles, and then solutions, from Helping Hands!
Thank you to everyone that donates or helps in other ways! It is your compassion and generosity that allows humans, at some of their lowest points, to maintain dignity, and hope! When you lose hope..............All Is Lost!
Reach out, there is help available!
Thanks again for assistance, and the wonderful gift of lights!

If I could give a zero rating I would! I have never met so many hungry families that have tried to reach Helping Hands only to be left without help! I'm so disgusted by this I will soon be opening my own food pantry for those people who have been ignored by Shirley and her Helping Hands foodbank that never returns calls or is open.

In the next month I hope to be able to start helping families in Las Animas, Co.

If you can help us in anyway I'd appreciate any and all help.

If you are a family or individual needing food please call
719-468-3383 and once the pantry is open I will help you and your family with food.

Or if you can help us get the pantry open earlier please call at
719-468-3383

Grandmas Food Pantry will be opening mid spring 2017

Sincerely,
Sheryl Dowell
