Kosish is a non profit organisation creating ripples in the field of palliative care which is a much needed but generally ignored service. That people should be so interested willingly, to ease the journey of our ailing, debilitating brethren to their final destination, is a Godly virtue and act. Kosish excels in its services to bring peace into the lives of these unfortunate people who only wait to be pulled into the 'other world'. All prayers for such people. Salutations to each worker of Kosish and specially to Dr. Dam who is at the helm of this successful organisation. Best wishes and prayers for Kosish.

One the most humble non profit organizations where they care for the young children. I know my donations here will be well used for the nourishment and upbringing of the kids and make them happy! It's our trust in them we hope will remain in place for years to come.

I had the rare opportunity to visit Kosish years back to attend the board meeting of a national NGO.

The place is near a small nala. The head is Dr. Abhijit Dam. He purchased this piece of land with loans taken by him and a few of his friends. He is passionate in his work and he works voluntarily for 24 x 7 for the caring of patients. He also finds time in their family welfare. Their children are taught there. Teachers are also working voluntarily. A full time nurse and administrator are taking care of all the activities. He also finds time in home care services in the remote parts of the village.

One peculiarity I find there is Dr. Dam preserves the debris of a small fort used by the ancient rulers, as monuments.

I strongly feel that the charity Dr. Dam through Koshish is commendable and needs recognition by the society.

I know Dr. Abhijeet Dam since past 14 years and I personally feel that he is that person who is giving real meaning to the saying...*Doctor Bhagwan Ka Roop hota hai*
At the time of birth of Koshish I was there... Though not much associated physically but yes, I was and I am still with it. Seen many efforts and his personal touch with all his patients reflects in the smiles of those terminally illed patient who knows that they are going to leave the materialistic world soon, yet saw life in their eyes while dying...all because of tremendous effort and selfless service by KOSHISH.

Being erstwhile primary caregiver for my beloved wife with cancer, now counseling the terminal cancer patients undergoing Palliative care, volunteer and advocate of Palliative care in West Bengal, visited Kosish , the hospice . I am overwhelmed with the noble mission and services provided by the Kosish team led by Dr Abhijit Dam to the underprivileged section of the community, true Palliative Care service . I accompanied the team during Home Care visit and realised the healing power of LOVE and fondle , the strong bonding with the patients of all ages and all stages. In the picture, it is revealed how the physician is in close touch with the aged woman , distribution of medicine and consultation all free. A free clinic is run every Sunday . Doctors, nurses, volunteers with the traits of compassion, empathy and love ought to be coined HUMANE. Besides Palliative care services, kosish is conducting education series, specially the nurse's training to the local tribal girls who obtain certificate enabling them to be employed as trained nurses for their survival, to me , a great support to the needy families.
The environment is sustainable for health workers to perform the duties with dedication. I am so much imbued with the noble deeds, I resolve to work with the Kosish team in addition to my own involvement. The Palliative care services of Kosish deserve commendable.

The founder and medical director of Koshish Dr. Dam has extensive international experience and deep expertise in palliative care. Dr. Dam is has closely observed patients die a lonely, painful and undignified deaths in ICUs, and hospitals without proper palliative care centers. He has made his mission to provide the terminally ill with a good quality of life with symptom control. He has also focussed on spiritual and psychological issues in end-of-life care and has conducted some commendable work integrating religion, spirituality and quality of life. Dr. Dam has published multiple books on this subject and has given multiple international seminars and presentations.

Dr. Dam and his team provide rare and uncommon service to our nations aged and ill citizens. Hospices are common in developed world but such a facility in India is rare and that too where the services are given free of charge for poor people is extraordinary. Wish you all the best Dr. Dam and please keep up the good work.

I met Dr Abhijit Dam in the final years of the last century when he Joined BGH as a specialist in the department of anaesthesiology. He was a courteous man with a good sense of humour, and I at once took a liking to him. But the things that impressed me most were his ability to stay by needy people and an innate urge to do something extraordinary for humanity. He always talked about setting up an institution for terminally ill people. At first, I did not take him seriously, for I attributed his high spirit to the hollow dreams of a young man. Then one day, he with four other friends bought 2 acres of barren land with their own money. I was surprised, but still far from imaging that he could build up what it is now over there, for the idea of hospice was new not only to Jharkhand but to the entire eastern part of the country.

Dr Abhijit Dam’s project’s name is Kosish, and it stands on 2.25 acres of land in Pindrajora Thana in Bokaro. It is technically a hospice, for the primary purpose was to make it a hospice, but it is more than that. Apart from taking care of terminally ill people, Dr Dam takes care of old and sick people who are discarded by their respective families. On top of that, he runs a school for the kids of poor people, where hundreds of students receive education and mid-day meal for free. Kosish is indeed a unique concept whose motto is to bring cheerfulness to people from every stratum of society. May God bless Kosish.

Dr. Abhijit Dam is a colleague & college friend, whose NGO, Koshish, reminds us all of the Hippocratic oath that we doctors have taken, & that it is possible to serve if only you have the zeal to do it. When my wife, who is into Palliative care, wanted to visit Koshish, I agreed as it would give me a chance to visit my friend. However, on seeing the place & the work which Abhijit does for the needy people, I was really impressed. Here was a man who had single handedly ( of course, with Nibedita by his side), created a retreat, not only for the sick and elderly, but also for educating poor children, giving them food & other essentials, & helping out in any way he could, & that too, with love & compassion, not expecting anything in return. He is a Messiah! Hoping that we can have more people like him! Best wishes for all his endeavours!

The first time I went to Kosish, it was after my mother passed away. She was suffering from Cancer of Peritoneum and during the last three days of her life, I and my elder sister and brother were confused worried and lost, as in how to take the best decision for her as she was in coma, how to get her relief from her pain and how to let her go with all dignity that she would want. I had lot of questions and dilemma in my mind that stayed back even after she left for her heavenly abode. My visit to Kosish, meeting with Dr. Abhijit Dam resolved most of my own sufferings that were going on all the while, inside my mind. I saw how Dr. Dam would reinforce peace in the minds of his patients who had days numbered. I saw how palliative care works for dying patients to make peace and friends with their scare of death. Kosish is a hospice that is ideally located and managed to make the last days of terminally ill patients bearable, peaceful and less scary. The same year my father also passed away and in his last hours, I tried my best to make it as he would like it to be, as much as possible.
I saw Dr. Dam also reaching out for people in the surrounding remote localities where even basic healthcare is also a faraway thing. Kosish is a facility that stands out with their exemplary activities.

Kosish is the story of one man's crusade to make palliative care accessible to all. One of the pioneering palliative care instutions of East India, Kosish is led by the dynamic Dr Abhijit Dam and his team of dedicated doctors, medical workers, social workers and volunteers.

Kosish focusses on holistic wellbeing as opposed to only medical care. Compassion and kindness are the pillars on which this unique institution stands. Apart from hosting and caring for terminally ill patients, Kosish has also made significant efforts to better the lives of women, children and the elderly poor who live in the surrounding villages through their outreach programmes. I have personally spent a significant amount of time with Kosish and Dr Dam and can vouch for the genuineness and sincerity of their efforts.

Any support offered to this wonderful institution is guaranteed to reach the actual beneficiaries without any leakages and will transform their lives.

Palliative care was an area of work i wasn't aware of till i was introduced to Dr Abhijit Dam & the work he does through his ngo Koshish. It was his first book based on his actual field experiences which made me interested to learn more about this area of work. I have personally visited the hospice cum elderly care home run by Koshish near Bokaro. They do medical checkup camps in the hospice for the villagers in regular intervals. Children from nearby areas come for weekend classes & free meals are provided to them after class. They also do regular field visits to nearby villages for providing medical support.

Their activities show the compassion & empathy which Dr Dam talks about. As he says he believes in walking the talk.

Koshish, the hospice, is surely an exclusive NGO of its kind. It is the pride of our town. In fact, it is more than simply a hospice as it not only provides a long time care facility to terminally ill people, but extends treatment, food, medication, and shelter to destitute and other needy people. It has a primary school, too, where at least 100 pupils are taught and fed at least one square meal a day. To lend verisimilitude of my statement, I would like to share my own experience at Kosish. I’m an India born naturalized citizen of the USA, at present residing in Chirachas, Bokaro, to look after my nonagenarian, sick mother. In the last week of February this year, my mother, who was already suffering from hypertension, arthritis, and myriad maladies of old age was suddenly taken ill. I was very reluctant to take her to a hospital for I had a bitter experience with them. I became restless and did not have any clue what to do. I tried many doctors, but none of them agreed to visit my home. Then a friend of mine suggested me to call Dr Abhijit Dam, the director of Kosish. I did it, and lo and behold, Dr Dam was there at my house within no time. He stayed with us for more than half an hour, treating her, advising and discussing. The most surprising thing was that he did not charge a penny for his service and valuable time. Consoling me to keep faith in All-Mighty, he left, also offering me that if I couldn't take care of my mother properly, I could bring her to the Kosish. They would take care of her, and they would do it without any charge. I was shocked. I did not believe doctors like Dr Dam can even exist in this modern world. I was so shocked that for more than an hour I kept thinking of what exactly had happened. True that I did not take my mother to Kosish since I believe it is my mother, and I must take care of her. I requested Dr Dam to stay by me as long as she survives. He assured me at once without wasting a minute. Since then, my mother is under his treatment and care. He visited my house more than ten times, and he did it with his aids and staff. He never charged me a penny. When I insisted, he said if I wanted to do something, I could do it for the Kosish. It is my sanskara that I came across Dr Dam and his organization. God bless them.

Koshish is a hospice located in a peaceful rural setting. It serves the local community, has full facilities for residential elderly and the terminally ill, as well as the space to host a retreat for students or even meditators.
Dr Abhijit Dam is a wonderful human being who has dedicated his life and personal resources to setting up and running KOSHISH. It's rare thing (but much needed) to find such an amazing person or such a place!
