Sadly, I have to agree with the other negative commentators about KARES, particularly about its irresponsible founder. She operates this organization out of the subdivision she lives in, and regularly runs into issues with our HOA because she scatters cat food around our public areas (eg, our mailbox area) to feed the feral cats. I'm a cat lover myself, but doing so attracts other critters -- including feral pigs -- a danger to residents frequenting these areas. When asked to refrain from doing so, she becomes downright vulgar and hostile. I'd also previously contacted her for help capturing and neutering/spaying stray cats coming to our property, and received no help, no reply. I cannot in good conscience support this woman and her non-profit.
The pups KARES or Kohala Animal Relocation And Education Service Dumped On Me
Rating: O
ZERO stars for KARES or Kohala Animal Relocation And Education. Hogwash! This Deb character and founder of KARES advised me (well, she actually screamed it into the phone to then hang up on me) to DUMP the foster puppies in my care she'd originally convinced me she'd rehome into loving homes AND after 3 months in my care & I needed Kares to take them, to then do a complete U-turn & yell at me to DUMP the 4 Rhodesian Ridgeback/Pit mix puppies at Animal Control and to a clearly, unknown fate, a roll of the dice, if you will, if they even make it out of there alive. This shows me she DOES NOT CARE or value the animals well being, let alone the foster or potential new home.
Do NOT place your trust in this Deb woman or her organization! I told her I would contact an attorney, which I have done. NEXT CALL: She then admitted to advising me to (Afterall, she never knows who was in the room when that call took place) dump the pups, but embellished this fact with a LIE that she told me if "I can't wait a little bit longer"... NOT TRUE DEB, because I would have worked with that! She's dishonest and I have ZERO TRUST in her or her organization & that they care to rehome the critters into the best situation for them, let alone any regard for the human being & what they can handle. I have 3 dogs, 4 cats, 3 fish and a spinal injury, now 14 pets in my home including the 4 foster puppies. It's beyond absurd and she saw me as a target. I have no doubt she's burned others, so please post your own stories here. I will get to the bottom of her charade. She's not fit for the role she's pretending to take on with any responsible moral code, whatsoever.
Her sole volunteer (wonder why she only has one steady volunteer, a tad suspicious if you ask me) told me Deb's line "DUMP them at Animal Control" is actually Deb's go-to response or defense when a foster is attempting to return animals into their care that she clearly does not want, even after months of fostering and financial drain to the foster. This is emotional and psychological manipulation. Did her volunteer think I wouldn't figure this out? Right then I knew she had done this to many other unsuspecting others and I will NOT place innocent puppies in her care. She's bad news to the core and I'm beginning to hear this from many others she's burned. The thing that bothers me the most is she did this to me with a smile and zero regard for my issues. I think she enjoys it.

Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service or KARES is dedicated to the rescue of abandoned, abused and stray animals (dogs and cats), their rehabilitation and finding foster or adoption homes for them. KARES is not an animal sanctuary. We advocate spay and neuter as the humane way to control the ever expanding population of dogs and cats on Hawaii Island.
In 2012 KARES found forever homes for 270 dogs. We were responsible for the spay/neuter of 670 dogs primarily at no cost to pet owners who are experiencing economic hardship. KARES is an all volunteer organization and has NO paid staff. We are funded by donations and grants from corporate. community and private foundations.
Our web site: kohalaanimal.org maintains photos of animals available for adoption.
